at least you people aren't growing up in the 60s, where you have nothing to learn from except the radio, personal guidance from a teacher and your ear, hes definitely SHOWING you the rudiments
Trust me man if this had been some kid who was a new drummer showing off his newly acquired flam drags, then it would be totally different. This guy has all forty rudiments up for those same new drummers to learn from, and if they learn from these videos, they are learning incorrectly. It's unfortunate that people watch these videos and begin to model them.
I agree 100% ... those are the funkiest sounding flam drags I've ever heard. If you are trying to get into a drum corps or a college drumline, DO NOT learn from this guy.
Excuse me for asking, but what is incorrect about this rudiment. I have been playing the kit for almost 3 years now but wanted to really get into the details of theory and rudiments lately. If your going to post negative comments then at least tell the right way to do it...
I'd be happy to explain that to you. First of all, you can note the inconsistencies in the spacing between his grace notes and accents. Compare the spacing of the flam right at 0:14 , which is extremely open to the one at say...right at 0:20 , which is extremely closed. In fact, all his left hand flams from 0:20 to 0:25 are effectively double stops. I'll put the rest in another reply.
The other things to note are the inaccuracies in his timing. He starts off with correct triplet timing, but around 0:17 he starts moving the "pul," or the second partail, of the triplet closer to the "let," or the third partial. So in effect, it sounds as if the first note he's playing falls on the beat, the second note, in this case two notes because of the drag, falls on the "and" of the beat, and the third note falls on the "let" of the triplet. It should be an even triplet.
that's because it's a drag. The reason that a drag is notated the way it is is that those are two grace notes before a regular note. They're not to be played following regular metre, just as how the grace note of a flam is supposed to be directly connected with its regular note.
The flam drag is most definitely metered. Take a quick trip over to Vic Firth's website and look at the 40 essential rudiments. Look at the flam drag, then look at the ruff. The ruff is the set of unmetered grace notes you are talking about.
holy shit! Pro Mark DC-10's....how old is this video? I didn't think anyone used those shitty sticks any more. Not bad on the Flam Drags though. Not gonna dog him for that... For sticks though...I recommend the SCJ's, VF Hardimons, or Silver Fox MS.
Why do drummers have to behave like such wankers? Trying to make yourself big by criticising others achieves the exact opposite. I appreciate these vidoes. Maybe they're not perfect, but neither am I and neither, I suspect, are you.
Drumming is not sport, it's not a competition. It's music and art. Get over yourselves and stop behaving like insecure little children.
Or how about you post your own videos of the rudiments to show how perfect you are?
@TheSHAYTARDREBELLION Yes I am a drummer - I'm studying full time at the moment. I used to be not very good, but I'm a lot better now. There is so much to learn from others! I've had guidance from many great drummers this year and I can say that all of them were humble and respectful about their art. Hopefully others will learn some humility as they get older. Most of my favourite drummers are not technical monsters, they just sound great and play the right thing for the music.
I really enjoy the vids and appreciate that someone went though the trouble of putting them up. They are showing me alot and helping my own playing greatly.
Its kinda awesome how the famous drummers got their own "fave" rudiments
Lars Ulrich- 7 stroke roll( the breakdown in "One" ) and Flams
Mike Portnoy- Swiss Army Triplet
Mike Mangini- Single Stroke Roll

Everybody drums a different way. Calling the individuals wrong is not true, perhaps they were taught differently. I find this drummer very skilled.

I would LOVE to see a video without any mistakes. They can have a good time with that one.
But believe me, i'm going to be up anybody's ass who posts one. One loose pinky, and i'm going to town.

I love how this guy acts all professional but he sucks. His drags are late. Play triplets or flam accents to his drags you will see they are late.

Thank you I've been trying to point out how he sucks and how he should not be posting these videos. He is leading innocent drummers awry.
