I don't think Hysteria is 'copied' from this song, the guitar part isn't as heavy as Hysteria's. This song just got me more into Radiohead regardless :3
i think it's about an obsession with pretty things to hide a sense of emptiness/inadequacy. running away from the 3rd world suggests an effort to escape from a grim reality to things that are pure. but dentures/hard rock cafes/white washed faces all suggest a certain superficiality to what is being sought; they aren't real or satisfying. this is paralleled by the tension in the first part of the song until he returns to and cries out in the pain that IS real: "hurts me, darling use me..."
No offense , but the more I listen to Radiohead's song the more uncomfortable I feel of hearing Matthew Bellamy's vocal , although I "was" a Muse fan...is this normal?
IMHO, both this song and "A Reminder" should have been included on OK Computer. Would have made it an even better album than it was already. Seriously, Radiohead are CRAZY GOOD.
This song is definitely great ! But I'd like to say something more important : I announce that that there is a kind of dictatorship here. After the monumental OK Computer, Radiohead decided to engage on electric music, and that's also good ! But listen to "Knights of Cydonia" or "MK Ultra" by Muse ant you'll understand that Muse is also able to produce excellent songs that doesn't suffer of a lack of specificity, which i found better that this B-Side.
It's true that it sounds like some songs by Muse... But you may be deeply ignorant of the variety of the Muse's songs from "Shobiz" to "Resistance" to reduce all them to simple copies of this song "Pearly" by Radiohead.
Personnaly, I love the two bands, and it's a fact that Radiohead music had a great influence on Muse's one. But Matthew Bellamy also found inspiration on other kinds of music such as classical or hispanic music, which give them a part of their originality.
@JDizzle785 I'm a big fan of both Muse and Radiohead.True that Muse is influenced by Radiohead because Matt Bellamy is a big fan. But its only true for Muse's debut 1999 Showbiz album. Muse evolve every album and are now completely different from what they sounded like in showbiz. Radiohead are brilliant, but so are Muse and its a bit unfair to say Muse's whole career is a Radiohead copycat, judging from just few older songs which sound similar. Both deserve a lot of respect
OK, I understand how Muse sounds like Radiohead at times. Showbiz-era stuff was clearly inspired, but how does Muse rip off this song? I don't see it. Especially not to start such a Muse-hating thread like the comments have become.

@farizzal Yeah, the vocal melodies are similar. The rest happens in other songs by these, and other, bands so there's no point comparing that. Sorry about the pretentiousness, btw.
@farizzal uh no. Have you not heard feedback before? It's like saying two songs are similar because they open with a single chord (even if both chords are different). It's just feedback.
There's too much hate for Muse on here; don't get me wrong, they pale in comparison to Radiohead, but I don't think they sound anything LIKE Radiohead. The only similarity is between Matt Bellamy and Jonny Greenwood's guitars. Vocally, Muse is mostly falsetto while Radiohead is not. Listen to Life in a Glasshouse . . . you think Muse would do anything like that? They're musicians in their own right, let them be.
Radiohead uses a LOT of falsetto. Also, when Bellamy is in chest voice he imitates Thom's singing style almost exactly. It even once said on Muse's website that they started in honor of Radiohead.
@unopeneddoor I don't think they ever said they started in honor of Radiohead. They've cited Radiohead as an influence, and that's pretty obvious if you hear their first album. But compared to Queen or Rage Against the Machine I don't see how everyone says Radiohead is band Muse sound most like. Maybe the fans are just like that.
I saw with my own eyes where Muse said they started because of Radiohead on their own website. Muse sounds nothing like Rage. Where you get that from I have no idea. All Matthew from Muse has ever done is imitate Thom Yorke's vocals. Thom sang in "head voice" when very few rock bands had ever done that before. Then suddenly Muse did the same thing.
@leggna DJ Sounds, riffs using first few notes in drop D tuning, random headstock sounds, feedback, and killswitch effects that I've seen Tom Morello do exactly. Matt has even said RatM was a big influence and one of the first concerts I went to.
I don't remember them saying they started because of Radiohead, but maybe you're right. I can't disprove that. Bellamy was a big fan when he was younger.
It's Head voice, not falsetto, though it's easy to make that mistake. And Radiohead sings in head voice or falsetto in almost every one of their songs, listen to this one for an example.
Matthew sounds so much like Thom that I know a lot of people that confuse the two.
@unopeneddoor listen to cream, they used falsetto in 1967 in a rock context. tipe "strange brew" in your browser bar. listen to metal band "nitro" from the 80's. I think even the beatles used falsetto from time to time.
Again, if you actually READ what I wrote I said "head voice" not falsetto, they are two different things. The only other rock band to use head voice before Radiohead that I can think of was Queen, and they did it very rarely. A few folk bands used it too, but as far as true rock it was never used.
Head voice and falsetto are different because in head voice part of the vocal chord is vibrating, while in flasetto only the tip is. Head voice is harder to sing in than falsetto.
@unopeneddoor I know what head voice/falsetto are. And matthew bellamy and thom yorke are using falsetto frequently. The note at 2:09 in this song is clearly falsetto. If you want a good exemple of radiohead head voice you have the "You" note at around 1:52. And in glam metal they use just head voice with allot of resonance! THats not falsetto.
@breemdemeeen The oscillation from the guitar is similar to the fuzz factory squealing. that's pretty much it. There's a bunch of other Radiohead songs that can be compared to Muse, don't know why this one gets so much attention
I only just discovered this song (I loved Radiohead's new album TKOL immensely, but wanted more, so I went looking for B-sides). It's amazing, but is it just me or does it sound just like a couple different Muse songs? Does Muse just openly plagiarize Radiohead, or what? They have no integrity as artists. And Radiohead is completely amazing.
The intro sounds a little like Plug In Baby, and the verse sounds a LOT like Hysteria.
I come on here and find this huge ass Muse vs. Radiohead argument. I mean, this song doesn't even sound like Plug In Baby. Can't we all just get along?

Yeah I know that they have said that they've listened to RH to look for some influence, yeah my two other comments seem like they are saying that muse have Absolutely no influence from RH What I really ment was that they arent based in image or music genre in anyway with RH they are much more different Yeah probably they might have some influence but they shouldn't be taken as a copy of Radiohead I mean even RH had some heavy comparisons in Pablo Honey till they evolved, like muse did
I absoulutely love Muse to death and they are deff one of my favortie bands but I don't think that it's fair to mention Muse at all as they technically have no direct connections to them. We should respect this is a Radiohead song and leave it at that.
Muse sounds nothing like Radiohead. All you tools are kissing ass of fucked up journalists and lazy critics. Radiohead and Muse are two different great unique bands. And a unique band is a band that cant be compared you twats. So really your just keep on going on about how not unique Radiohead/Muse is. Muse sounds more classical and Radiohead more experimental. If you guys keep going on about this you're going to eventually realise you have been wasting your time!
If you knew about music you would not hold Muse or Coldplay in such high regard. Over-produced garbage! Not deeply critically heralded. Muse are like a sad pathetic rock-opera and Coldplay are middle of the road stadium rock specialists. Radiohead create musical art in the form of an album... like it or not. They are nothing like Coldplay or Muse. Just ask if any of Radiohead actually really like any Muse or Coldplay albums. I suspect not at all. Muse esp. are dreadful
I would definitely say I like Muse better than Radiohead. However theres not doubt that Muse was heavily influenced by Radiohead's music. I think thats ok, though. Muse's music is no carbon copy. Muse's music is full of new ideas and innovation. I think every band has influences...if you were to look hard enough i'm sure theres a video much like this one that is attacking Radiohead for sounding too much like an earlier band...but whatever...life goes on.
While it's an opinion if something is "better" it's not if it's more innovative. Muse constantly rips off Radiohead and Queen. Radiohead did things that were rarely, if ever, done in rock music before. If you did a poll of who is the most influential band of the last 20 years, I'm certain Radiohead would win by a landslide. I like Muse, but to say they're anywhere near as innovative as Radiohead is ludicrous.
@unopeneddoor I agree with most of that, only the part where you say muse is constantly ripping off queen and radiohead. I always ask for examples when people say these things but never ever been given one
@unopeneddoor have you listened to knights of cydonia, exogenesis symphony (all 3 parts), resistance, futurism - listen to them then decide if you think muse is not innovative
and RIP OFF? thats such a harsh word, muse is influenced by the two bands, but saying they ripp of radiohead is a bit harsh, when you get solid proof that muse has ripped of a radiohead song and you can name that song and the one by muse it is identical to, then ill let you leave these crazy comments of yours
I've heard every one of those songs. I'm not saying that Muse doesn't have some innovation, just that comparing them to Radiohead is a joke. Muse Rip's off the fact that Radiohead sings a lot of their songs in head voice (which a lot of untrained people mistake for falsetto)--something I've never heard any other band do before Radiohead and along comes Matthew, who does nothing but imitate Thom's voice.
@frenzythechicken Ripping off is a loose term used in music. It doesnt have to mean 'identical sounding' every time it is used. For example everyone knows that Creed ripped of Pearl Jam. But if we were to get literal..we wouldnt find a song that is identical between the two. But it is a fact that Creed 'ripped off' the very essence that is Pearl Jam. The same could be said about TheMonkees who ripped off the sound and style of The Beatles. Pearl Jam(Creed) Radiohead(Muse)etc every band has one
@frenzythechicken You sir are right on the money. Muse is beyond innovative in every way. Radiohead on the other hand shamelessly rips off Muse every chance they get. As you already know Pearly is a rip off of Muse's incredible Plug in Baby. But did you know that the live version of Pearly was modified in order to rip off bits from Muse's Knights of Cydonia as well?
=YdtXBrQ8GOM ---listen to this live version of Pearly, particularly the second half that steals the ideas of Knights of Cydonia
@frenzythechicken I'm glad you mentioned the monumentally original song that is Exogenesis Symphony. Only Muse are capable of seamlessly incorporating symphony/orchestras into rock music. As usual Radiohead followed in Muse's steps and copied Muse by adding orchestra bits into their songs. Take a listen to the following orchestra/symphony Radiohead songs to hear Muse's influence on them: How to Disappear Completely, Dollars and Cents, Airbag, Pyramid Song, Nice Dream, TheNationalAnthem,Reckoner
@frenzythechicken You nailed it by mentioning Muse's Resistance track. This track is innovation personified. This mindblowingly good Muse song uses an instrument called the Ondes. An old forgotten instrument that Matt made cool again with his ability to think outside the box. Check out the making of Resistance to see Matt using this ring device. Radiohead also stole this idea and used the Ondes in songs like Where I End and You Begin, TransAtlantic Drawl, Pyramid Song,How to Disappear Completely
@jibblychupos Haha, I like your use of sarcasm to get your point across. Thank you for the link. Not sure if I hear Pearly in KoC though. Exit Music is really where Muse got their early sound from. And they added some Queen in for dramatic effect.
@jibblychupos Dude, you're ignorant as shit. Jonny was interested in the Ondes Martenot when he was a teenager, way before Muse used it in whatever crap they made. And you are even contradicting yourself: Resistance- 2009, How To Dissappear Completely, Kid A- 2000. Do your researsh, you dumbass.
@frenzythechicken Radiohead even has a song titled Palo Alto that brazenly steals the lyrical themes from Muse's Futurism with the whole future world scenario. For example Palo Alto uses the lines ''In a city of the future it is difficult to find space'' basically taking the ''Grounded Boxed in'' stanza from Muse's Futurism. Palo Alto even steals Matt Bellamy's patented guitar shrieks.
@jibblychupos Also, dude, you can't use any reference from OK Computer or Kid A. Muse got famous with Absolution on 2003, before the previously named Radiohead albums. Saying Radiohead copyied, or even were inspired by Muse, just makes you look like an ignorant asshole. I suggest, before debating without facts and making yourself look like an utter dumbass, you do your research.
@jibblychupos Radiohead's Palo Alto which was on Airbag/How Am I Driving was released on 1998. Muse's Futurism was released on 2010. The only way Radiohead could steal Muse's "lyrical theme" was if they had a time machine, came to 2011 and listened to one of the crappiest bands around. And even that doesn't make sence since without Radiohead's music, most of Muse's music wouldn't exist. As I said earlier, do your research before insulting Radiohead's music comparing it to Muse's music.

@steelundergrounder I think you'll find Plug in Baby was written well before 2001, there's live performances of it as early as 1998, im not saying it's before this song, but it certainly wasn't 2001 :)
Personally, I prefer Muse but I am not going to whine who is better. I don't care about the arguments about who is better, who copied who, etc. To be honest, does it matter? Older bands ie. Queen and The Beatles to name 2 have influenced ALL of popular music these days, that doesn't mean there isn't quality music around now and it doesn't mean we need to trace back to the first person who played a tune and name it the best thing ever.
You all srsly need to grow up, stop wasting your time.
@unclesamfatg I don't see anyone else in the mainsteam thats done anything remotley as innovative of late! half of the rock bands at the end of the nineties and beyond have been ripping off Radiohead to varying extents! who else is so experimental? dabbling in electronic music as well! half the time their B sides are ten times better than most peoples A sides! the release of a Radiohead LP is a real event! they are the Pink Floyd of the modern era
@katakisLives Radiohead are huge! They are very innovative! Even more innovative than Muse! But there isnt a excuse for Radiohead fans to say that Muse aint innovative just because they were influenced by Radiohead. I see allot of RH influence in Muse melody and harmony. But they are far from being a copy.
@unclesamfatg My comment about the influence of Radiohead was never intended as an attack on Muse!!! I was not even thinking about them when I wrote that comment!! I was just saying I felt they were the most revolutionary band of recent times!
Why is it that EVERY Radiohead song has comments about Muse vs. Radiohead? There's nothing of the sort on any Muse songs on Youtube. Pretty much sums up Radiohead's fanbase doesn't it?
@LfcJosh You've got a point, and i would know because my two Favourite bands are Radiohead and Muse. But Muse fans often talk about RH and have never listened to them properly, because if you do you it wouldn't take long before you realised Rh are better. This is from a person who would of said he would never find a better band than Muse about 4 years ago.
I don't think Hysteria is 'copied' from this song, the guitar part isn't as heavy as Hysteria's. This song just got me more into Radiohead regardless :3

No-one can convince me there is anything new at all in this song .. total rehash of the Muse sound - but missing so much on the way!
It lacks in depth - charisma - sounds like some guys jamming in the garage .... nowhere near Muse's standards sorry!
And the fact that they have copied Muse by doing new tracks with an orchestra (n) .. how naf is that!!!
Nowhere near as good as the atmosphere of Exogenesis,
Even ClassicFM critics were 'ashamed' to concede that it had moved them to teary eyes ..

Radiohead uses a LOT of falsetto. Also, when Bellamy is in chest voice he imitates Thom's singing style almost exactly. It even once said on Muse's website that they started in honor of Radiohead.
unopeneddoor 10 months ago
@unopeneddoor I don't think they ever said they started in honor of Radiohead. They've cited Radiohead as an influence, and that's pretty obvious if you hear their first album. But compared to Queen or Rage Against the Machine I don't see how everyone says Radiohead is band Muse sound most like. Maybe the fans are just like that.
Kueller917J 9 months ago
@Kueller917J
Then suddenly Muse did the same thing.
leggna 9 months ago

Matthew sounds so much like Thom that I know a lot of people that confuse the two.
unopeneddoor 8 months ago

Head voice is harder to sing in than falsetto.
unopeneddoor 8 months ago
@unopeneddoor I know what head voice/falsetto are. And matthew bellamy and thom yorke are using falsetto frequently. The note at 2:09 in this song is clearly falsetto. If you want a good exemple of radiohead head voice you have the "You" note at around 1:52. And in glam metal they use just head voice with allot of resonance! THats not falsetto.

@unopeneddoor No it's not, its your opinion
breemdemeeen 11 months ago
@breemdemeeen
I like Muse, but to say they're anywhere near as innovative as Radiohead is ludicrous.
unopeneddoor 10 months ago
@unopeneddoor I agree with most of that, only the part where you say muse is constantly ripping off queen and radiohead. I always ask for examples when people say these things but never ever been given one
breemdemeeen 10 months ago
@unopeneddoor have you listened to knights of cydonia, exogenesis symphony (all 3 parts), resistance, futurism - listen to them then decide if you think muse is not innovative
and RIP OFF? thats such a harsh word, muse is influenced by the two bands, but saying they ripp of radiohead is a bit harsh, when you get solid proof that muse has ripped of a radiohead song and you can name that song and the one by muse it is identical to, then ill let you leave these crazy comments of yours
frenzythechicken 8 months ago
@frenzythechicken
I've heard every one of those songs. I'm not saying that Muse doesn't have some innovation, just that comparing them to Radiohead is a joke. Muse Rip's off the fact that Radiohead sings a lot of their songs in head voice (which a lot of untrained people mistake for falsetto)--something I've never heard any other band do before Radiohead and along comes Matthew, who does nothing but imitate Thom's voice.
unopeneddoor 8 months ago
@frenzythechicken Ripping off is a loose term used in music. It doesnt have to mean 'identical sounding' every time it is used. For example everyone knows that Creed ripped of Pearl Jam. But if we were to get literal..we wouldnt find a song that is identical between the two. But it is a fact that Creed 'ripped off' the very essence that is Pearl Jam. The same could be said about TheMonkees who ripped off the sound and style of The Beatles. Pearl Jam(Creed) Radiohead(Muse)etc every band has one
Craneke 8 months ago
@frenzythechicken You sir are right on the money. Muse is beyond innovative in every way. Radiohead on the other hand shamelessly rips off Muse every chance they get. As you already know Pearly is a rip off of Muse's incredible Plug in Baby. But did you know that the live version of Pearly was modified in order to rip off bits from Muse's Knights of Cydonia as well?
=YdtXBrQ8GOM ---listen to this live version of Pearly, particularly the second half that steals the ideas of Knights of Cydonia
jibblychupos 8 months ago
@frenzythechicken I'm glad you mentioned the monumentally original song that is Exogenesis Symphony. Only Muse are capable of seamlessly incorporating symphony/orchestras into rock music. As usual Radiohead followed in Muse's steps and copied Muse by adding orchestra bits into their songs. Take a listen to the following orchestra/symphony Radiohead songs to hear Muse's influence on them: How to Disappear Completely, Dollars and Cents, Airbag, Pyramid Song, Nice Dream, TheNationalAnthem,Reckoner
jibblychupos 8 months ago
@frenzythechicken You nailed it by mentioning Muse's Resistance track. This track is innovation personified. This mindblowingly good Muse song uses an instrument called the Ondes. An old forgotten instrument that Matt made cool again with his ability to think outside the box. Check out the making of Resistance to see Matt using this ring device. Radiohead also stole this idea and used the Ondes in songs like Where I End and You Begin, TransAtlantic Drawl, Pyramid Song,How to Disappear Completely
jibblychupos 8 months ago
@jibblychupos Haha, I like your use of sarcasm to get your point across. Thank you for the link. Not sure if I hear Pearly in KoC though. Exit Music is really where Muse got their early sound from. And they added some Queen in for dramatic effect.
commatose1 8 months ago
@jibblychupos Dude, you're ignorant as shit. Jonny was interested in the Ondes Martenot when he was a teenager, way before Muse used it in whatever crap they made. And you are even contradicting yourself: Resistance- 2009, How To Dissappear Completely, Kid A- 2000. Do your researsh, you dumbass.

WizardRealms 7 months ago

ShazerThe 8 months ago
@jibblychupos Radiohead's Palo Alto which was on Airbag/How Am I Driving was released on 1998. Muse's Futurism was released on 2010. The only way Radiohead could steal Muse's "lyrical theme" was if they had a time machine, came to 2011 and listened to one of the crappiest bands around. And even that doesn't make sence since without Radiohead's music, most of Muse's music wouldn't exist. As I said earlier, do your research before insulting Radiohead's music comparing it to Muse's music.

@katakisLives Radiohead are huge! They are very innovative! Even more innovative than Muse!
