My chow is the smartest dog I've ever had. HOWEVER, I have a friend who is a vet and says he often has to muzzle them when working on them. They can be very strong willed. I'm glad your chow is not aggressive- but I think their rep is well earned. Then again, if you don't like strangers coming around it's a good thing they are so territorial. I think most chows are one person dogs- they bond with their owners but don't think much of strangers. Kinda like a lot of cats.

its true about the muzzle part. groomers sometimes wont even grrom my chow, just because they chew up cages and get angry when they are frustrated. My chow is like, the nicest thing to me. we have gardeners, housekeepers, and pool men that come in to our backyard and my chow doesnt care about anyone. Its really just how they are nurtured i think
