They filmed a portion of this movie about 2 blocks from my house. The police blocked off a whole street every night for a week. The night sky was lit up like day-light for blocks and blocks around the location. I'd never seen such an incredible collection of lights, trucks, equipment, people etc. It was amazing! When the movie came out I watched it waiting to see the scene shot next to my house - Turns out, it's about 5 seconds long. It seemed like a ridiculous amount of trouble for just that.
I saw this Trailer as a kid and had nightmares for days about that Jesus statue opening it's eyes. 20 odd years later it's totally different to how I remember it!
@AnthonyDark --I agree. In how you remembered it, did it seem like Jesus' eyes were bigger? I remember seeing the trailer on TV as a kid and remember Jesus' eyes opening wider and larger.
I would've loved to see Blatty's original cut of the film. Unfortunately, like all the other Exorcist sequels, the producers and studio heads hated it and demanded reshoots. They were responsible for the film being called the Exorcist III instead of just Legion, which is what Blatty had intended because of the disaster of Exorcist II: The Heretic.
"Excorcist III" is the only watchable movie from the series with the exception of "Dominion". Dominion rates a 3 of 10. I first watched "Exorcist III" was when the Jeffrey Dahmer trial was being shown live on Court TV. Revealed in the trial was Dahmers obsession with this movie and watched it daily. He felt a deep kinship with the Psych Ward patient in this movie and longed to be more like him. We watched it that very night
This is the only film the the Exorcist series that is scary.
for me,the most excellent horror movie ever existed!unreplacable!every actor who plays does the best!!!i don't count any more how many times i ve seen it!excellent!!!
@chotzrary well no dip he wasn't influenced by exorcist 3. He was an 80's killer, while exorcist 3 came out in 1990. Not a possible influence if it came after his crime.
The part where Jason Miller (Damien Karras) and Brad Douriff (James Venamun) switch places is fucking amazing. I could watch that part a million times. Brad Douriffs acting in this movie gives me chills. His rage is better than Pacinos. For real.
In the original, Pazuzu would have been a minnion, though serving the devil, it would have assumed many guises to trick its enemies. Remember the line from Father Merrin? 'The devil is a liar, it will try to confuse lies with the truth,so don't listen'. Again, read 'Legion', all doubt will be removed.
major question: who was the demon in this movie, it definetly wasn't Pazuzu, he was more calm and mature. and i know it wasn't the gemini killer. please don't tell me it was satan himself, tht wouldn't be right. I'm guessing pazuzu was part of a party of demons, and this one was just another member of the group.
Yes, in Exorcist III, it was the Gemini Killer. Pazuzu didn't inhabit Karras' body. He did, however, ASSIST the Gemini Killer by placing his soul into Karras' body. Pazuzu, of course, isn't dead though. He just escaped (well, fled) at the end of The Exorcist.
hey this was going to be a seperate film called Legion, but the production company cut it up and slapped the Exorcist name on it to cash in. Its not allways the writters or directors but alot of time the shitty ass companys who "own" them.
@LiviJones Also there was a killer in the eighties in Florida, who was suppose to have been influenced by the film. I remember police saying Exorcist III, didn't have anything to do with the movie. Who knows, but it does tell you the kind of influence The Exorcist has had on culture. Example, Justice Clarence Thomas/Anita HIl, case, during the case on t.v. they used the "There seems to be a pubic hair in my drink" from the original Exorcist book.
@11poketrainer While I'm not a fan of those other two: Candyman is definitely one of the greatest horror films! So underrated and underanalyzed, it is.
No, not at all. Exorcist II is pretty poorly executed, but there are moments of pure brilliance (particularly the score), III was good from what I saw, but I mised the end. Many agree though that III is far superior to II, though still inferior to the original.
This is a great movie really!!!The best of the sequels. Another one is "Dominion" the first version of the prequel, don't be confused with "The Beginning".

'The Exorcist III' is a classic. For me, it's on a par with the original Check out the original novel, 'Legion' by William Peter Blatty.

oh sorry no, i'm talking about the demon right at the end of the movie, the one who kills father morning and tries to kill kinderman.

@Nemesis2459
Apparently, that was who the Gemini Killer refers to as "The Master", in the film, and so I assume he means the devil himself.
