  • Please Mr Mayor, do the right thing. My mum is from Ioannina and I hope to come home one day and find a place I can be proud of. Animals and people are all part of one big family and we have the power to make this world a better place.

  • I can promise you that I will NEVER set foot in Greece until this widespread animal abuse is finally cleared up. Not a penny of my money will go towards their tourist revenue.

  • I've encountered people that feed and pet our own cat and yet discuss about how some potentially dangerous strays should be poisoned, but -alas- with a poison that's quick and painless!Their absurdity is inconceivable.

  • They look upon them as pests and yet this is the result of the ignorance and indifference of Greek people, who don't spay/neuter and buy pets without realizing the responsibilities entailed.

  • frikto!!!!!

    shame on you

  • It is unbelievable. I was in Ioannina a year ago. Mr.Mayor you have the churches full of people every Sunday and all the time when you have a celebration. Who is doing this? Do you have criminals in Ioannina or mentally challenged people? You better take a good look at your surroundings and keep this beautiful town free of these awful events; I have noticed that was not the first one.But corruption in this country is so high, that you may get away with murder easily.

  • This is horrific!

  • why the goverment do not do something about this hell of a world for this poor animals! What can I say don't go in Greeca when you have holidays!!

  • Where's the leadership, Mayor?!?! I visited Greece when I was a teenager and saw a large amount of stray dogs. It hurts that your country looks upon them as "pests", and you do nothing to stop it!! So what are you gonna do, Mayor, stand there and shrug your shoulders?! Why don't you try a little thing called YOUR JOB!!!!!!! Demand that people spay and neuter their animals! Get animals microchiped! Do something other than ignoring the situation and your people's outcries!!!

  • I always thought I might like to visit Greece but after seeing this video I believe I have changed my mind. And to learn that this has been going on for some time with no responsible action by the authorities. Shameful to say the least.

  • Quote: "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps perpetrate it.

He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

    --Marthin Luther King, Jr--

This is going on for years now, despite of animal welfare laws!

The government and mayors keep silence and are not doing enough to stop this brutal murder of dogs and cats, even they don't do anything about other atrocities done to other animals. Greece, you are a disgrace for mankind!

  • The Mayor of this town should hang his head in shame. The poisoning of the stray animals is a disgrace. It is time that this town and the Mayor started to help the animals and to treat them with respect. People that love animals please do not visit this country until they show kindness to the strays. Tell your friends not to visit also.

  • the mayor of this town is as guilty as the sub human beings that carry out such barbaric acts this is not only a problem in this town but is going on all over greece the authorities obviously condone these acts as they do nothing to stop them and they have the gaul to call themselves civilised

  • as long as the greek Agricultural minister Kiltidis wants to keep all stray animals in greece, the greek stray animals have to die here.wake up and allow neutering actions- also from foreign vets, Control the greek microchip law.

As long as there is no responsible ownership and no neutering actions the streets will be full with strays.

this means the greeks are afraid of the amount of dogs and POISON them- fast and cheap- brainless

  • I cannot believe such cowardness to whomever is doing this horrid act. How cruel can one be? I have not wanted to visit Greece because I know about the cruelty that the country turns a blind eye to! Makes my stomach turn.

  • The Greek authorities should be brought to account for these horrific acts of cuelty.

The tourist industry of Greece would suffer greatly if this appauling video was shown to tourists before they booked their holiday.

  • It is incredible was a bloody country Greece and who wants to go there? It must be awake the goverment of this land ,otherwise the goverment may burn in HELL!!!

  • Τα αδέσποτα μονίμως απροστάτευτα και πάντα στη καταφρόνια... Πότε θα εφαρμοστούν οι νόμοι που προβλέπουν τη τιμωρία αυτών των δολοφόνων; Η πολιτεία αδιαφορεί, το πρόβλημα διογκώνεται. Πότε θα προστατέψει το δικαίωμα για ζωή αντί να διευκολύνει αυτούς που σπέρνουν θάνατο;

  • SHAME!!!

  • This is appalling and horrific.........

I will certainly not visit Greece again, who would ? after knowing that defenseless animals on the street can be treated in this way. We should all love and care for animals, introduce spaying to avoid unwanted dogs.... ..all this suffering could be avoided with a little common sense and compassion.

SHAME ON YOU !!!!! SHAME ON YOU !!!!

  • Shame on them, those who are reknown for their philoxenia, the love of visitors to their beautiful Country. This barbaric practice should not be tolerated. They should move forward and educate the next generations, to love and care for animals, to introduce spaying to avoid unwanted litters and suffering. Who wants to go to a place like that for a vacation? knowing the poor dog you pet while there will die the worst death months after you return home.

  • I cannot believe that this cruelty is happening in a "civilized" EU country. I will not travel to Greece until they stop this insanity and start caring for these poor dogs. They need to be neutered and spayed, treated for their different diseases, they need food and water and above all, they need a loving home. Shame on you Greece!

  • Disgraceful and this isn't even the worst thing that can happens to those poor animals. The country and citizens of Greece should be ashamed that something like this can happen in their country. It's about time the government took some action to show us they can react to a problem without resorting to killing. Greece needs to move out of it's ancient past to save their future culture before it's too late.

  • This is a shame for all of us! Poor animals. -:(

The same situation is in Serbia...-:(

Animals need our help and protection, not torture and persecution.

  • Greece was the birthplace of Western civilization. Isn't it high time that the people of Greece embrace again the high ideals of their ancestors? Turn away from this monstrous behavior!

  • More victims of the poisoning epidemic that never stops in Greece.

  • These animals' deaths are an absolute disgrace, thank God for the protesters.

  • Please stop this cruely. Innocent animals need our help and protection, not torture and persecution.

  • This absolutely needs to stop!!!! Animals do NOT deserve to be treated horribly like this- the scum that treats animals like this should get a taste of their own medicine. I think we should all come together and do that.

  • "The moral progress of a nationa nd its greatness can be judged by the way it treats its animals" ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Animals were put here for their own purposes just as we were. They have every right to life! Shame on the humans who exploit their vulnerability!!! These people have no right to call themselves more civilized than the innocent, defenseless creatures they kill.

  • I will not purchase any product in the shops from GREECE.They are allowing these crimes to continue its appalling.

    Lindsay

  • shame on you people, animals have as much right to this planet as any human. shame on you

  • This is a shame for all of us!

    Stop poisoning!

  • Shame on the idiotic people for hurting these precious animals!!

  • cont. from previous post:

The protest was covered by local tv and radio and a larger meeting is to be held on Thursday evening. It was a surprise to see such a response to an event that was not advertised but somehow people knew and wanted to express their anger and disgust, not only at the poisoners but also at the owners

A PUBLIC MEETING WILL BE HELD TOMORROW ......... the local TV & newspapers have been very supportive & will attend the meeting as well ....

  • ....cont. from previous post:

A banner expressing anger at the poisoning of animals led the procession and was posted outside the nomarcheia at the end of the march.

Many people brought their own adopted strays with them and some wore placards with slogans such as We are protesting at the murder of our friends. We were once strays too

    cont ....../3

  • PROTEST ABOUT THE POISONING IN IOANNINA ....

Over 70 people braved the cold last night to demonstrate against the poisoning of stray animals in Ioannina. What started as a small gathering to give out leaflets on poisoning and to make citizens aware of what had happened in the city on 28 January quickly evolved into a peaceful demonstration that marched from the town hall to the nomarcheia (government offices).

    cont.... next post

  • This is a disgrace and you should hang your heads in shame

  • I was dreaming and planning a very relaxing vacation to Greece for my family this year until I saw this. No more. What kind of government stands by and does nothing while this kind of senseless cruelty to such innocent victims goes on? Why are the perpetrators of these heinous acts allowed to roam free in society?

  • Shame on you.

I visited Greece years ago when I was a student and was so saddened and appalled by the suffering animals I swore I would never visit again.

What gives these bastards the right to take innocent lives so cruelly.

    May they rot in hell.

  • Please stop poisoning the animals in Greece...Do you not have any heart and soul in your body...how can you people in Greece behave like this...European people travel to the Greek country for vacation every year, spending money as turists...I hope no one will travel to your country again, until you start caring for stray animals and treat them with respect and care...Think neutring programs like the rest of the world does. In Denmark we do not have stray dogs.why...we care...try doing the same..

  • Shame on Greek Officials who do nothing about the poisoning of innocent animals in their country , I have never been to Greece and will never go there until the killing stops.

  • Yet another shocking poisoning of innocent animals in Greece. When will these things ever be investigated? When will action be taken against the people who commit these crimes? How much longer can you ignore the poisonings and other cruelties inflicted on your animals with the whole world watching you? TIME FOR ACTION HAS COME GREECE! SHOW US YOU CARE! Until that day don't be surprised if the tourists stop coming - who wants to come to a country filled with such pain and suffering? Shame on you.

  • This is the shame that those who live in Greece must live with daily. As a foreigner staying in this country ONLY to help animals, emails come in daily to our shelter email (friendsofanimals-nf). Yes, there are cruel people in Cda, USA, UK but there is recourse for those who condemn this, punishment & prison doled out, but not in Greece. So it is worse bcuz its not just the doers, itss the watchers who turn 'the blind eye' to their neighbours action, who 'dont get involved.' Shameful.

  • ! BOYCOTT GREECE !

Such cruelty is unacceptable, totally unnecessary - neuter and spay is the only way to manage the stray dog situation.

! BOYCOTT GREECE - DO NOT HOLIDAY WHERE THEY POISON INNOCENT LIFE !

  • Very cruel & heartbreaking! Whoever is doing this you are a horrible examples of human! You are giving Greece a bad name, the world knows & does not approve, you need to be convicted of a crime as this is a terrible crime against a helpless, living being!

  • You are showing the rest of the world, how barbaric and cruel you are. I and thousands of others will not visit Greece while you continue to be so evil. You should be ashamed.

  • This is a testament to what really goes on when stray/abandoned animals roam the streets of Greece and become victims to senseless crimes. I myself witnessed the abuse and mistreatment that these helpless animals endure. We need to improve the legal protection for the sake of these defenseless animals who ask nothing more than a loving touch.

What is going on in Greece is unacceptable and shameful!!!

    ORGANIZE A PROTEST!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely barbaric and totally uncivilised. As a member of the EU, Greece should seriously consider these actions. I will be telling friends & many business contacts, to make them aware & ensure they do not visit Greece, until this situation has ceased. At the very least, the tourist industry will be seriously affected, once word of these horrific actions are spread around the world.Totally unacceptable behaviour & the people that instigate such things, can have neither a heart or a conscience.

  • Disgusting!! Shame on Greece!!

    Stop killing the animals NOW!!

  • Shame on Greece!

  • Disgusting.Disgraceful.Words fail me as to how this can happen in this day and age. I will never visit Greece again while this is happening. Please stop this unecesary cruelty NOW.

  • Greece should feel ashamed of itself. Catch the culprits now.

  • It is shameful for Greece to allow the deliberate poisoning of dogs. IThis is both cruel and criminal. Catch and punish the culprits. Otherwise the entire country shall be condemned by the entire world.

  • Dishonor over these humans. Greece is admits for this killing method Who does not respect animals, respected also no humans .Der devil is to get her.

  • Shame on you greece, i will not travel there until animals stop being abused and the abusers pay for what the o.

  • This is brutal and barbaric.Poisoning an animal like this is terrible~Greece has lost my tourist dollars and my respect.Shame on you Greece~stop this now

  • Shame on greece-

its no solution to kill the animals with poison, the streets are full with dogs.

Nikolaos Gontas- are you blind ?

    Step in the stirosy programs,

the microchip law exists in greece- why you dont start with responsible ownership. A Breedingtax will fill your cash account... With poison you put only blood on your hands-

wake up Nikos- poisoningtimes are over

  • The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man"

    -- Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

  • /watch?v=2jY0ds6u7W4 <<< i see none of you commenting on the above video regarding the actions taken to protect wild animals of Souli Area of Epirus, following the death of some animals due to weather conditions.

According to your mentality and way of thinking....everybody should visit Greece now! :) :P

  • I visit Greek every year 2 or 3 times, evertime I go to Crete to work in an aniaml shelter and to visit te projects I support with my foundation.. Don't tell me anything about mentality and way of thinking.. don't make me laugh..pffff

  • I am saddened and disgusted by the appalling animal cruelty displayed by this video. I am even more disgusted by the total lack of concern displayed by the authorities when it comes to the welfare of animals in Greece! The mass killing of dogs all over Greece makes it very clear that it is not a kind, compassionate or civilized country. I hope the Greek people will demand justice for those animals and throw out any public official who does not actively seek the same!

  • what can i say...i am greek - thanks God i grew up in Germany....in some things the Germans are great.....as treating animals and having respect for them...

its a pitty...my country is a place of chaos where the one who has the strongest fist survives...not the one whos right

the right is not with the righteous but with the villan...

Protagoras knew this in his dialogues...but saddly no greeks read philosophy anymore...

  • I would Never visit Greece cause I know of the animal cruelty there is there this is adding to what I already know. Canine are here as our companions What happened to the saying Man's Best Friend is his Dog this is so in Many Countries in Greece the authorities poison them this SICKENS ME I would Love to lace all these COLD BLOODED MURDERERS with their own poison

  • Epirusnews.... The beauty of Greece, its history, its architecture etc pale into insignificance when there are CONTINUOUS horror news of animal abuse, poisoning etc coming out of Greece!! A 'cradle of civilisation'??? Sorry, but I see Greece as a cesspit of animal misery!! A country which has been in the EU since 1981, Greece has prospered enormously - well, people have - animals are still being abused and poisoned as they have always been - for them, Greece is HEEL to live in!!

  • Isnt it obvious...if such things are done by members of your govt, it has to make news. Some1 should poison that stupid mayor.

  • Finding excuses by saying that "these are acts by a small number of people and that it doesn't express the vast majority "is just an excuse that will be repeated when the next mass poisoning occurs. The only question is....where next?

  • The other thing that makes me sad is the living conditions which many dogs especially hunting dogs live in! I myself have more than 200 pictures of such dogs, kept in cages(not kennels!) under very inhumane conditions with innadequte water and food, and I am sure that the "owners" do not seek veterinary care or even the basic medical attention for these poor animals.

  • I know where you are coming from "epirusnews" since I am Greek and live here and love my hometown and feel bad about all the negative comments that are made about Greece. But it hurts me that nothing is done about these appalling acts.I live on the island of Kos where last March someone hanged nine dogs (there were more but nine were reported) nothing or very little was done about the whole thing and the authorities tried to silence the whole incident. (watch: animal abuse in kos-greece)

  • This is so disgusting. Please stop these cruel acts.

  • please stop this. Get a neuter programm and care for this lovely creatures..

  • Its been 4 years now that we upload daily about 10 videos from the Region of Epirus, in an effort to highlight and make known the reach daily activity of a poor but beautiful area of Greece. An area where people remain close to their traditions, where human values are at high levels, where people prefer to live despite the difficulties of the Atheno-centric Greek Governments of the last decades.

  • I am quite disappointed that among thousands of videos uploaded, this is the one which received the most comments, being the motive for a lot of you to say "dont visit Greece again", "punish the country" etc.

  • I didnt see anyone to comment on the woman's opinion (which i believe express the vast majority of the people of Ioannina) on the above video and her reaction to take with her one of the dogs. Not either anyone to mention that the whole city condemned the incident, even the coach of the football team on its press conference after Sunday's match made an appeal against the insident!

  • Do not misunderstand me...I am 1000% against the action. Unfortunatelly, local officials and administration are one of the worst this area could have, but personally, I do not agree that the action of a few stupid can represent the majority.

  • I am also a bit disappointed that amongst thousands of extremely interesting videos, full of cultural activity, interesting local news, people like to care only for the "bad" things.

A professor of mine while i was at the uni were asking us: "What makes news?"....his answers were....bad news, suffering, death, etc :(

    edito of Epirus News Portal

  • epirusnews, I am sorry you find it hard to understand why animal abuse is so important to us, it has nothing to do with wanting to see bad news. Greece could be described as one of the most beautiful countries in the world, I have visited many countries, but it has this terrible darkside to it and prospective tourists should be made aware. I had a terrible holiday at end of season because of this and wished I had been warned before & I would not have visited Greece.

  • epirusnews, how can you blame "a few stupid" people as since the first report, there have been many more dogs than 5 poisoned, in just a couple of days, which would indicate that the authorities could be involved?? Ioannina is not an isolated incident, there are reports almost daily of this mass end of tourist season poisoning all over mainland greece and the islands and these are only the reports which actually hear about.

  • Read all your comments but what about the values for animals.. The human valeus can be so high but if your values for animals are low, there is something wrong.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man"

    -- Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

  • Shame upon Greece that it continues to allow these horrific killings !!! I will never visit Greece until action is taken to stop these horrors that conctinue to take place on such a daily basis!!!!.

  • why anyone would want to go on holiday to this country is beyond me.

  • This should not be happening in any country, especially country that is called civilesed... I love visiting new places but as many others I stick to the idea not to go to Greece for holiday. I know treating animals is a problem in many countries but definitely st should be done about it before the country starts calling itself civilised. This is medieval times. Please stop this!

  • I will never visit Greece or any country that treats any liveing being with such inuhmanity and disrespect. The mayor ought to be poisoned himself.

  • Poisoning animals is so cruel !!

I am happy there are still people helping the Greek strays !

  • "The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated." Gandhi

    Need I say more..!!

  • Appalling and disturbing. This needs showing to all those in this country contemplating spending their holidays in yours.

  • I boycott Greece for this reason. If more people showed their displeasure by stopping going on CHEAP HOLIDAYS and sticking to their principles instead, a lot of this would S T O P. So VOTE WITH YOUR WALLETS, people.

  • Δηλητηρίαση ζώων η ντροπή της Ελλάδας. Κάποτε αυτό πρέπει να σταματήσει.

    Διαμαρτυρηθείτε όλοι. Βοηθήστε όλοι

  • dont know why tourists come to such a barbaric country.

  • This sort of thing should not be going on in a "civilized" country, part of Europe too! This is why I will not go back to Greece on holiday. It is too heart-breaking to see the way the animals are neglected and left to wander the streets starving. I'm just glad the lady took the surviving dog. Hope it gets well looked after.

  • Such abuses can't be tolerated in a "civil" Country! Why the Mayor keeps his silence while the whole world is looking at Ioannina waiting for that massacre to stop? How many times must we read about poisonings? I hope noone will ever spend his holidays in Greece until animal rights are respected

  • P.S. The first video on the right (under 'related videos'), of which the title begins with the letter H shows a number of dogs on the street in Ioannina, believed to be the dogs about which some local people 'complained' and some of those stray dogs were poisoned the following night. These so-called 'strays' were in fact previously abandoned 'owned' dogs.

  • Shameful, outrageous, inexcusable! ! At least this time there has been and continues to be a lot of protest about it. The media coverage has been extensive and a meeting demanded with the mayor, the number one suspect of this latest atrocity. OK, so he may not have dirtied his own hands, but the poisoned bait was spread around on his orders.

  • I blame the local police and authorities for this. they are useless.

they should have take care of the poor dogs when the people were calling them. but they were probably too busy drinking frape. its a shame not only for giannena but for Greece.

  • ΠΟΛΥ ΚΑΛΑ ΤΑ ΛΕΕΙ Η ΚΥΡΙΑ.

  • Appalling and heartbreaking and no doubt done with instructions from the muncipal department because of the numbers of poisonings involved in such a short space of time.

As a previous comment was said, this goes on all over Greece, every day, with nothing being done because the govt do not care. I had the misfortune of visiting the country at the end of tourist season last year - the start of the poisoning season (after the tourists have left of course) I would never go there again!

  • These poisonings were no doubt instigated by the municipality. If you want to express your revulsion to the mayor, please pm me and I will give you his address and email address (youtube wouldnt let me post it up here)

  • "the cradle of civilisation" what a joke! The EU country with the worst record of animal abuse! These poisonings go on every day all over Greece and sooner or later your prospective tourists are going to get wise and avoid visiting your barbaric country.

If this video was updated, you would learn that the following day revealed 11 more dogs poisoned at another park in the city & 13 dogs poisoned in the central square of Ioannina, totalling approx 30 dead dogs and an unknown number of cats.

  • Totally barbaric!!!!! For a country that brags so much about their ancient heritage !!!!!!!

    Shame Greece!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fifteen years I worked in my country of birth - Greece - introducing spay/neuter/vaccinations and release programs and the program took off and was supported by the majority. Since the Olympics - the country has gone back in time - back to the barbaric means of ridding the streets of these dogs, it has undone all the good work that has been done by animal welfare groups on the main land and islands ! The world looks on with heads shaking in disbelief - shame on Greece for allowing this cruelty

  • Comment removed

  • What an absolute disgrace. Shame on Greece! What kind of country allows this to happen? Poisoning of dogs and cats in Greece is rife across the whole country and I am disgusted.

I had the misfortune of visiting Greece last Summer and was appalled at the sheer number of strays I saw. They were all emaciated and in urgent need of veterinary attention. I asked locals what was done to help the strays, many would laugh at my concern and told me that they would be poisoned by the local authorities!

  • These are the modern times' atrocities taking place in our modern cities. The Municipality of Ioannina pleads its innocence and complains on the grounds of insufficient funds that will lead to the completion of the Shelter for abandoned animals "sometime" toward the end of 2009.

In the meantime, animals get poisoned right across the City Hall as this local news report points out on January 29 2009.
