Religion had it's purpose. It was the science of their times, Only later religion got corrupted and split from science. Modern religions are like governments, corrupted yet with blind followers. Only recently quantum physics is trying to explain religious beliefs. I think science and religion should merge again and start explaining why humanity feels to worship something we do not yet understand through science.

Bill is right about religion, but it's not quite fair to characterize it as a "neurological disorder." Many sane people are under the influence of what they've been taught and/or raised to believe. I do think it's a problem to raise children with these ideas, because they are hard things to get rid of in adulthood, but religion just causes confusion which is difficult to sort out. It's not a "mental illness," because the brain isn't malfunctioning, just running on the wrong information.

@holmlllll That's a great question. There are two reasons: One, parents don't ingrain "Santa Claus" into their children with the same seriousness. Most Christian parents treat the idea of "God" (for example) with a very stern reverence that children internalize far more deeply, because of the understanding that God is an authority figure who will actually punish (not just withhold toys) for bad behavior.
Two, because kids grow up in religious communities that reinforce "God" long after age 4.

The subject of providing an education to young children that reflects reality and relevance better than the Quran does is a crucial matter.
It is archaic, backwards, and cruel to make children read only one book, without being provided objective information, or even conveying to the students that there are other ideas and perspectives in the world.

Yes, striving for balance and objectivity should always be our state of critical thinking - in this case, I don't think that Maher has a problem with the Koran's assertion of a true democracy - obviously not. What he does take issue with is the fact that there are violent mindsets based on the "not so nice" passages in the text, and they should be examined.

When people have more freedom and knowledge they start using common sense. We used to slaughter people because "the bible said so", we used to keep black people down and put homosexuals in jail because "the bible said so."

Religion had it's purpose. It was the science of their times, Only later religion got corrupted and split from science. Modern religions are like governments, corrupted yet with blind followers. Only recently quantum physics is trying to explain religious beliefs. I think science and religion should merge again and start explaining why humanity feels to worship something we do not yet understand through science.

Bill is right about religion, but it's not quite fair to characterize it as a "neurological disorder." Many sane people are under the influence of what they've been taught and/or raised to believe. I do think it's a problem to raise children with these ideas, because they are hard things to get rid of in adulthood, but religion just causes confusion which is difficult to sort out. It's not a "mental illness," because the brain isn't malfunctioning, just running on the wrong information.

@holmlllll That's a great question. There are two reasons: One, parents don't ingrain "Santa Claus" into their children with the same seriousness. Most Christian parents treat the idea of "God" (for example) with a very stern reverence that children internalize far more deeply, because of the understanding that God is an authority figure who will actually punish (not just withhold toys) for bad behavior.
Two, because kids grow up in religious communities that reinforce "God" long after age 4.

The subject of providing an education to young children that reflects reality and relevance better than the Quran does is a crucial matter.
It is archaic, backwards, and cruel to make children read only one book, without being provided objective information, or even conveying to the students that there are other ideas and perspectives in the world.
It matters because when you deliberately restrict informed consent, you are taking away a person's free will.

@scsublett Firstly, you have obviously never read the Quran. Secondly, he is judging what is done in Islamic states when he has no knowledge of Islam or the Middle East and that is what angered me. BTW there is scientific stuff in the Quran that was not discovered by man until the 1900's.

@CURRYKING21 How come the scientific endeavors started in Arabia stopped? How come the majority of those who follow Islam are now anti-science? My Muslim friends don't know anything about science and they really think that science is the tool of Satan. Yet they all have mobile phones, cars, internet, plumbing, electricity, clothes, houses, schooling for their kids etc. I think that relying on a holy book is fatal, any holy book that is.

Another thing we could consider is that why (at my University from 1999 to 2005) the majority of students were from the middle east? In that sense compared to UK and students from Europe, India, Aus, America N&S, Africa, Orient. What do their universities (in the mid east) teach?

"Moderate Muslims" (an oxymoron) are adamant that Islam is a peaceful religion. Firstly, Islam is not a mere religion, but an ideology and political movement. Secondly, it is "peaceful" as long as no person or group is deemed to have criticized or brought their ideology or practices under scrutiny. Then the use of violence or the threat of violence against those transgressors is sanctioned.

Yes, striving for balance and objectivity should always be our state of critical thinking - in this case, I don't think that Maher has a problem with the Koran's assertion of a true democracy - obviously not. What he does take issue with is the fact that there are violent mindsets based on the "not so nice" passages in the text, and they should be examined.
If buying a used car,do you look at the nice leather seats and focus on that despite the fact that the brakes don't work?

The New Testament,however,is much more literal and factual.
BUT, my point was that TRUE Christianity is represented by Jesus, who taught nothing but peace and love.
