I'm studying applied psychology and I do work at a hospital (psychiatric department). I hate to admit it, but nowadays docters still do the same cruelties to people. But now it's just under the form of medication. But it damages the brain too, if you ask me. And if it doesn't work, they give something else. Trail and error. But! We know more about the brain now than people did in the past, We can localize things in the brain now. Which is a good thing.

The whole experience has left me with little to no "confidence" the our medical system.

As for ECT (which is a controlled seizure) it is NOT horrifically damaging. Seizures are now prevented with muscle relaxants, and ECT has very small amount damage compared to the damage done by BS science.
