From one of the artists in this production: "[Marthaler] wanted very minimalistic acting which I found very accommodating, because Tristan is an opera of great intimacy, about conversation… really in many ways a chamber work. Lofty and pathetic opera gestures have no place in it. It’s much more about a glance, about the blink of an eye on the part of your partner on stage…"
Robert Dean Smith is excellent, his secure and committed singing are wonderful in this music. It was a pleasure to watch and listen to him in the Met telecast of Tristan a couple of seasons ago. Unfortunately, his partner, Mme. Theorin, has an annoying vibrato that detracts considerably from the elegiac quality inherent in the vocal writing. Finally, I must take issue with the designation of the director as "renowned." Perhaps "notorious" would be a better choice of words...
I saw this in 2005, with Nina Stemme and Robert Dean Smith. The singing was excellent but this production, the costumes, stage action... the UGLIEST thing I ever saw. Imagine, paying all this money for what must be the most difficult opera tickets in the world, coming to Bayreuth with a sense of expectation, musical history, awe, then be subjected to this...by the Liebestod I couldn't take it any more, had to lower my eyes. Christoph Marthaller should be SHOT DEAD for this unspeakable GARBAGE.
@Wotan123456789 wow, how can you saw something in bayreuth twice?! i've heard that there's a waiting list for the tickets and the waiting time is big!! im jelous ;)
@heyhit This production was performed many times since 2005. I saw it twice with the same cast. It was one of the most beautiful opera experiences of my life. The production is simply superb.
I really (!!) like this! I saw the premiere of this marthaler production live in bayreuth 2009. I think its intelligent and very sad. If you are open minded and dont want a production to fulfill your exspectations, give it a try. It really moved me that tristan and isolde (almost) never come to really touch each other and seem to be caught and lost in a cold and modern world. No chance and room for their love. Great "Liebestod" and wonderful ending!!!
Of course Katherina and Eva are responsible for the dvd, but not for the production. That was the senile Wolfgang Wagner in 2005. The singers were good but the "Regie und Inszenierung" brrr....Isolde fast geistlich gestört etc.
see this production makes me vomit with a bad case of diarrhea.......what are they doing in Bayreuth ?!?!? Singers should refuse to participate in such trash.
No, I'm NOT wrong. I saw the premiere of this production in july 2005. This production came back in Bayreuth in the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. It was the baddest Tristan of the circa 30 productions I ever saw. The best was that of the Scala in 2007 and 2009 with Daniel Barenboim and Patrice Cherau Chereau (Ian Storey, Waltraud Meier,. Matti Salminen, Ekaterina Gubanova). Also very good the second Tristan of Wieland Wagner (with Windgassen and Nilsson etc.) I saw in 1968 in B.
one of the best productions i've ever seen, utterly fuckin' astonishingly and shudderingly splendid! And then some!

Stemme und Dean Smith sind einfach großartig!!!!!!
Sehr schade nur, dass die Inszenierung nicht zu dem passt, was gesungen wird.
Leider sind gute Opernregiesseure sehr selten.

@MrMannshausen It's not Stemme, it's Iréne Theorin.

In the hall he sounds a lot like James King. Something about the way his voice interacts with the natural acoustics of the hall...I like him a lot!

il faudrait vraiement que els grands chanteurs comme Dean Smith cessent de se fourvoyer dans des mises en scène aussi nullissimes...

The baddest direction and scenery I ever saw. It was a shame for the Bayreuth Festival and Wolfgang Wagner (responsible).

@3tristan , excuse me, is not responsible Katharina or yet not in this production?

This production was new in 2005, when I saw it in Bayreuth. Katharina and Eva are the leaders since 2009.
