This is such a bastardization....I want to throw up. It takes the almost prayer-like state of the words and makes them nearly irrelevant, and focuses on the arrangement....which is self-indulgent, and repulsive. I like it. I've liked it since I first heard it when the tribute album came out in 1995. Sorry that others don't like it, but then people tend to have strong reactions to Leonard Cohen's music, especially when someone else does it.

Spoken word evokes a totally different emotional climate than does singing..this is just different interpretation. Kinda club-like..dark, with strobe lights. I like it, and Hallelujah is one of my favorite songs. Yes, it's not like Rufus Wainwright or Jeff Buckley's versions, but it is not intended to be. Enjoy it for what it is!

I think you're all missing the point. The song is a lament but also an exclamation of joy hence the use of the word Hallelujah. I think it is a brilliant version of the song. The spoken lyrics are depicting a man bitter and twisted by failed love whispering his moan to a drink at the bar and the falsetto Hallelujah is proof his spirit can rise above it all. A brave and unusual cover done before Jeff Buckley made it trendy again.
