This is such a bastardization....I want to throw up. It takes the almost prayer-like state of the words and makes them nearly irrelevant, and focuses on the arrangement....which is self-indulgent, and repulsive. At least Jeff Buckley's version gave respect to the reverence of the song. This is robs the song of it's essence. I vomit.
THIS IS A VIOLATION OF COPYRIGHT LAWS. Leonard Cohen wrote this " Halleluyah" not this racist antisemitic Irish. It is too easy to attack Israel and then steal also the copyright. Moreover, the arrangement is disgusting. I played Halleluyah in Brussels, Paris, Tel Aviv and I always put the name of the divine poet Leonard Cohen. Do it. Do it.
This is why U2 is great, because they take risks. Where are all the other bands with 30 + years under their belt? I agree with Grunigen, everyone else does it like Leonard Cohen and they simply can't get past the mold. There is never any greatness which comes from conformity.
There's thousands of booooring covers of this song, and luckily Bono did something quite different, and quite cool, with it. I like this version! Obviously from the period Bono and the band was steering away from the mainstream, in a freakin good way.
Maybe he just doesnt like this song - maybe its sarcastic version :) I'm fed up with copies of Cohens "Hallelujah". Bono didnt want to sing this song better its obvious. ;););)
At least he keeps it interesting. So many covers just end up being a pale imitation of the original. Pointless. As far as I can tell, it's the lyrics which shine brightest in Cohen's songs and that's what Bono is really going for here with his spoken word style.
I like it. I've liked it since I first heard it when the tribute album came out in 1995. Sorry that others don't like it, but then people tend to have strong reactions to Leonard Cohen's music, especially when someone else does it.
Spoken word evokes a totally different emotional climate than does singing..this is just different interpretation. Kinda club-like..dark, with strobe lights. I like it, and Hallelujah is one of my favorite songs. Yes, it's not like Rufus Wainwright or Jeff Buckley's versions, but it is not intended to be. Enjoy it for what it is!
@Glenndrans That one is pretty bad,i give it to you!But Zooropa...i mean :Stay(far away,so close)/The first time/Daddy's gonna pay/Wanderer?You just have to keep your ears open and you might discover a few gems here and there ! @dojle74 What's the point of covering a song if you're not going to bring anything new to the table? At least Bono had the balls to experiment a bit. Besides, this song doesn't appear on any official record, so he never sold this to anyone.
@kuebby It's part of that experimenting U2 were doing back then..Let's just say politely that it does no respect to that great Cohen's poem.At his discharge Bono does that song live and in a more classic version. No electronic and he doesn't sing in in that voice range!it is really good and emotional!Don't know why he didn't do it in that way? They failed with that cover. But trust me i just seen them July 8 & 9 (15 times in 22 years) and that man(Bono) is still the Man that sang those songs!
I think if I heard this not knowing what the original or buckley's versions sounded like I'd probably think this was cool. Its not better than a conventional cover of the song, but its good for what it is
@hibernica007 You say ""It's not just a crime against music. It's a crime against humanity." - Ok hibernica - don't hold back - tell us how you really feel...
Sounds like horrible, cheesy *cough*adult film*cough* background music that takes place in one of those poetry readings where people snap their fingers instead of clap.
This version is different than other covers, sure. But it totally destroys the meaning of it. It does not make me think of a love story, just an awful porno.
I think you're all missing the point. The song is a lament but also an exclamation of joy hence the use of the word Hallelujah. I think it is a brilliant version of the song. The spoken lyrics are depicting a man bitter and twisted by failed love whispering his moan to a drink at the bar and the falsetto Hallelujah is proof his spirit can rise above it all. A brave and unusual cover done before Jeff Buckley made it trendy again.
@radomiriz I think liking or not was a point of view. I got your point, still, I don't like this version. The worst point, in my opinion, was the way he sang those "hallelujah", it seemed that he wanted to make some lyrical voice and tottally failed. The positive point was the spoken parts. I's a different cover, the whole idea was great, but the performance was a wreck. And sorry for my English _o_
