  • one of my favorite phish performances

  • Hammer pants Trey! PLINKO TIME!

  • SO abridged! also, very glad that paul is layin down some organ...

  • Does ANYONE know where to get those shiny gold pants treys wearing? Those are exquisite.

  • Does anyone know how trey does that glissando trick, that constant chromatic increase that he uses to build to the climaxes? I noticed on the Vegas 2000 dvd that it looked like he was doing it by extremely fast tremolo picking, to the point where it just sounded like one constant note, but here it seems that he is not picking during it at all and maybe his guitar is just so feedback prone and/or responsive that it simply resonates dominance lol... Anyone???

  • @sethillation I think you answered it yourself. As you may already know, hollowbody guitars in general are more vulnerable to feedback than the average guitar. The Languedocs (guitar that trey plays) are even more vulnerable to feedback than the average hollowbody. The upshot of that is incredible sustain, particularly when combined with a tube screamer.

  • @sethillation That said, there is room for technique in the explanation. Just because he isn't "picking" every note, doesn't mean that each time he moves up the fretboard there is no new "attack." He is essentially attacking the fretboard with his left hand by virtue of those bends and vibrato. If you play guitar chances are you've done this yourself. Turn up the volume, and just jam a finger on a fret and start bending back, forth. You shouldn't need to pick the note to get some sustain.

  • This was the night before one of the best shows of all time. I will never go to a ninties phish concert ;_;

  • Look at Paul Shafer Rocking-Out on his keyboards!! Yea baby!

  • Look at Paul Shafer Rocking-Out on his keyboards!! Yea baby!!

  • nice attire boys. :+) punny

  • Of course Trey wears those pants on Letterman... I approve.

  • these were the daze:)

  • Oh My God Letterman is so young in this!

  • My favorite Trey guitar..............

  • 5 people soaked on the rath that you didnt quite mask

  • ha ur name is awesomely funny

  • I remember when this aired. We were taking my little cousin to his first Phish concert and his parents were watching this to make sure they wasn't any bad language or anything. They couldn't understand a world Trey was saying.

  • cumming

  • 5 people didn't live when they were young...

  • @potbassboob ooohhhh shhiiiittttt....didjndrums owned your ass!!! Totally bitched slapped you!! hahahaha

  • treys pants kick my eyes ass.

  • @potbassboob First of all, I have been to 50+ Phish Shows, the 1st of which was in '94 (I'm sure you were still sucking your mamas tittie back then), so I've listened to plenty. Secondly, his name is Jon. And yes he is an amazing drummer, perhaps one of the best ever. Lastly, my original comment was a joke based on the old Gieco caveman commercials...you are the fucking loser...Good Day Sir... I Said Good Day!

  • fishman's probably trippin balls behind that drum kit

  • Chalkdust isnt from Hoist, its from a Picture of Nectar. Why would they play chalkdust? Not saying I'm pissed cause thats one of the nastiest tunes of all time...but i wanna see down with disease with good quality audio

  • @jbaby1129 Chalkdust was actually their first 'hit'. Well, not really, but it was there first single and it got a bit of airplay in the early 90s before Hoist. Down With Disease and Sample in a Jar had enough exposore what with the videos and the commercial accessability of Hoist (indeed a lot of phans thought the band was selling out at the time, me included). I'm guessing they wanted to promote their older single to show people how long they've been around.

  • The other day I was thinking of what I would say if I met a member of the band. Id say.......3 night run at deer creek this summer?

  • trey looks high

  • trey looks high

  • some great trey faces in this one...

  • such a shame it ended so early

  • can i live while i'm young.....great tune!!!

  • Playing drums in a jam band.....so easy a caveman can do it

  • @didjndrums i agree this song is easy to play but they have muucccccch harder songs on the drums

  • 4 party poopers don't want to live while they're young

  • that tree at the end looks like a nug of some good weed doesn't it.

yes, yes it does give yourself a pat on the back for that observation.

you know what i think i will.

good for you, good for you.

  • Glad to see Fish put on a shirt for this gig.

  • phish is so good. too bad they are such dorks.

  • I want his gold pants. Bad.

  • @thISxTHplacE I'll wear a pair in Worcester Dec 27 and 28.

    RAGE!!!!

  • @caldrich83 hahaha

  • Chalk Dust Torture - Phish [Burlington, Vermont] - 1992 - "AMG Pick. Their BEST rocker with GREAT vocals, guitar riffs/drum work/keyboards. Good first impression." - A Picture Of Nectar (Elektra)-1992.

  • Trey looks the same today as he did in 94. He's like Jacob from Lost.

  • i was at ecu at this time... just started to get into phish during this time!

  • i seriously dont think i can find anything to dislike about this band.

  • @ledzepp95 Wading In The Velvet Sea, but that's it.

  • @deBebbler hahaha basically agreed.

  • ha ha haaaaaaaa...ok

  • this is awesome..hard to find more energy than that in a peak of a song

  • That bald keyboarder guy seems to be digging the Phish vibes :)

  • CAN I LIVE WHILE I'M YOUNG?!?!?!

  • Sweet pants!

  • aww baby phish :)

  • One of my favorite songs... BTW "A Live One" was not a one show recording... its from a years worth of touring. Still love listening to it though

  • @tequilaeric I never knew that, thank you.

  • How awesome was that performance!!

  • this is the best memory

  • Love this song! And Trey's pants!!! :D

  • this song jams...Fishman is kickin' ass on the drums. That bell sounds sick.

  • Wow, I never really paid any attention to Phish, but they're actually good... This kinda kicks ass, lol.

  • :-)

  • @BobBarkerIsOld i had to comment about what lebpuppy said. my girl loves phish and makes me go to shows with her. to me, some of phish's songs do kick ass and some of them are soooo bland. to me, and dont get me wrong i like phish some, but to me they have no mediocre songs. their songs are either bad ass or the other ones make me wanna say- man that was crap.

  • @LebPuppy hell yeah dude phish is the shit most people jus t don't give them a chance

  • @LebPuppy welcome to the phamily my friend!!!!!!!!

  • @LebPuppy definitely check out more stuff by them this is not even a solid showing of what theyre capable of.. this is a very eushed chalkdust considering the time theyre give on this television program look at some more lrecordings of their live stuff

  • ha ha need a ride home haha

i just love how this song isnt even on hoist and dave is holding the case backward lol what a fkning circus i love everything about these guys

  • I don't know why Letterman is offering a ride, seeing as he's from Indiana.

  • @BobBarkerIsOld because Indiana is the shit.

Well, sort of. Once you move out of the state =X

  • @phildd0t LOL I've got no problem with Indiana, it's 3 hours from where I currently sit.

  • @2manymuthauckas Yes yes it is.

  • is it possible to be to good?

  • im lovin the solo i thought treys pants were gonna light on fire midway thru

  • i went to there concert recently, it was awsome, and everyone was blazed

  • ha, the concert i went to, everyone was blazed, and half the people were tripping on acid and molly

  • Hell yeah! '94 Tall-Tee Hoodless Hoodie Trey!

  • gotta love phish

  • I love how the house keyboard player (name escapes me) jams along, quite prominently in a couple parts. These guys really love doing what they do.

  • Paul Shaffer

  • hahha trey's pants!!! so awesome!

  • went to college in Mass, and needless to say, Phish was playing 24/7 all over campus. what a time it was!

  • Out of every band I've seen, SSSC, Papa Roach, Chevelle, Trivium, Flyleaf, and Disturbed, none puts the crowd in a better mood than phish.... really wish I could see phish =(

  • you can

  • ha, no shit, those mainstream rock bands you list are horrible

  • good lord that is a list of terrible bands.

  • hey, did I mention anything about your music? no

  • holy crap, its like u really want to tell everyone u have a horrible taste in music

  • why cant you see phish? got my tix for cobo wooooohooooooooo

  • me2

  • really shitty list

  • @Cazfootball19 I've seen Papa Roach three times, all because they were opening for someone I wanted to see, and I have to admit they are crazy live. Really good, energetic performers. Clearly Phishheads aren't going to like them because they don't compare as far as musicianship goes, but I'd argue that Jacoby Shaddix is more charismatic as a frontman. But when you can play like this, who needs charisma I guess.

  • i love this fuckin bass riff

  • it loves you too

  • These guys would have been fuckin' awesome at Woodstock.

  • today's grateful dead

  • praying for them rothbury 2010

  • epic!

  • I was 1

  • pretty good

  • Funny to see how young some of you were....I had just finished my first 2 years of College! hahaha Used to rage Hoist at parties in our College house all the time fall 1994!

  • i was 2 months old

  • I was 14.

  • I would buy a bobble-head Trey.

  • god only knows how many people became fans because of this. Im sure just about everyone inside found their way over to MSG to see if they could scalp some tickets haha

  • And the ones who didn't (me included) just bought the album of that MSG show.

I still love that they can sell out arenas.

  • Ok listen dude. Contrary to popular belief, "A Live One" is not all one show, it is a compilation of shows from 94. If you take the time to look up the setlist from 12/30/94 it is

Wilson, Rift, AC/DC Bag, Sparkle, Simple, Stash, Fee, Scent of a Mule, Cavern

Set 2: Sample in a Jar, Poor Heart, Tweezer, I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome[1], You Enjoy Myself, Purple Rain > Hold Your Head Up, Harry Hood, Tweezer Reprise

    Encore: Frankenstein

Not exactly the "A Live One" album is it.

  • I wish ALO was one show, except I wouldn't be able to listen to it, on account of it was too good.

  • i was going to say exactly this, minus the setlist

  • Phish is LEGIT

  • This performance is what turned me on to Phish. I saw it on Letterman as it happened.

  • great performance though

  • Trey moves his head like a chicken....always has.

  • treys pants are off the chain!!

  • my buddy sewed a his own pair they're uncanny

  • i love trey's head bobs

  • It'd be easy to make a bobble head Trey :D

  • Dave did hold the album backwards, looks like he did it on purpose too.

  • They toured Europe a couple times in the 90s...and Japan in 2000 (I think?).

They've never done a proper "WORLD TOUR" if that's what you are asking.

  • Bonnaroo!!!!!

  • "Where you guys from in Vermont? All of you are from Burlington, need a ride home, Aha ?" Letterman is such a sarcastic dick, gotta love it.

  • The did an epic European tour in 97 as well as a Japanese tour a few years later. As of now though all their shows are scheduled in the US

  • You should check out their other live performances on youtube. They are one of the best bands ever.

  • this was such a condensed version of the song, still really good tho

  • I don't know. Honestly, I don't think so.

  • I'm pretty sure they went to Europe in the late 90s. So unless you have a time machine and are willing to travel a further distance...

  • I have a time machine. :)

  • They're coming to like 30 miles from here and they sold out in the time it took me to log onto Ticketmaster. I think it's like 60,000 people, but I'm not exactly sure. Some day, I will get there...some day.

  • dude that sucks. i was like 1 when they had that show lol. but im seeing them this summer.

  • I was at the MSG show that night...I now I can't get tickets for any of the sumer tour!!! Still the best band ever...

  • phish spac tickets went on sale today gonna be awasome !!!!!!!!!

  • The GORGE ! ! !

  • I was 1 when this was on T.V

  • I was 14

  • i wasnt born

  • i was 2

  • same

  • 1 by a day O.o

  • I was almost 7

  • thats awesome

  • funky pants on trey

  • wwhhaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS SUMMER

  • Phish's network TV debut! How fun -- I can remember sitting in my kitchen in '94 watching this with a good friend of mine on a teeny tiny little screen.

  • jon's got some style

  • can you say stoned out of their minds? hahaha

  • Nice neckbeard going there.

  • Other than Trey starting the lyrics a little too early they couldn't have kicked this songs ass anymore.

  • They did that on purpose to keep the song length short enough for TV.

  • best letterman video

  • I was still wearing Hammer pants in 94 too, only I didn't do it so stylishly.

  • love treys dance during the solo lol

  • Gotta love the peakock thing Trey has going with his head. Hilarious.

  • amazing

  • trey is one of the best guitar players ever go phish

  • soo much engergy and emotion. Just a high powered great chalkdust

  • Thanks!

  • page is just going nuts on this one!!! AWESOME.

  • they all are my man... they all are.

  • BEST CHALKDUST EVER

  • this was huge for phish at the time!

  • AMAZING!

  • this was my 1st phish experience when i was in 9th grade.......what luck ...life changing

  • i'm talking about his neck thing!

  • 0:47 to 0:50...look at his head!!!! XDDDDDDD

  • can you imagine having no idea who phish was and then tuning into letterman on this particular night?

    Talk about a mindfuck

  • i knew about them then.... i wish tehy would comeback!!! AHH

  • i love phish

  • The 4 most talented human beings on earth.

  • you can tell trey just wants to keep on wailin', but has to stop for t.v.

  • Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!
