  • Beginning at 9:33, what is the "push/pull" industrial machine that is displayed? It seems to be a manually-powered water pumping station, but I've never seen one where lateral motion is (so wastefully) converted in this way, in any pictures that I've seen of Victorian mills or factories. Any help, all you engineers out there??

  • Mrs. Kendall:"Oh Mister Merrick, you're not an Elephant Man at all." John: "No?" Mrs. Kendall: "No, you're Romeo." TEAR ORGASM!

  • This is a very sexually charged scene, even though there is no touching or anything involved.

  • I love it when Joseph says, "I have to rely on my imagination for what I can't really see." He also means that he's never seen a lady before. It's so precious!

  • Screw the Elephant Man. I only watched this movie because of Anne Bancroft, the most beautiful woman of all time. Look, there she is in this scene ^^

  • @OpinionatedJerk you chose ur name very well sir.

  • I would like to have met Mr Merrick and have him call me friend. :)

  • the nurse has a very REALISTIC approach on life.

  • @steverooni99 maybe :(

  • "People are frightened by what the don't understand" - Joseph (John) Merrick.

That is Still Very TRUE to this day!!!

  • fuck! im crying again! ughhhh

  • if i was there & seen what the night watchman did to scare Merrick i'd

BOX HIS EARS! You can believe that! & i'd tell Mr Merrick i want to be your bodyguard. lets see if anyone ever mess with u again

  • in address to the odd beginning: his mother was frightened by elephants and that day in age, it was assumed that freaking out due to something (elephants) would have a direct effect on the unborn child. Merrick in fact had three genetic disorders. none were caused by this episode.

  • @Nitecrawler24 So what? Its a good movie.

  • "No, you're Romeo" and then the tear forming on Mr. Merrick's face.

I could only imagine the emotion he felt upon hearing those words that made him feel worthy for perhaps the first time in his life.

  • Treves was a jerk too. I could see why you wouldn't want him to procreate but damn buy a hooker and let her give him a glory hole blow job for christs sake

  • @my74junker Treves was a jerk because he didn't buy Merrick a hooker? Dude!

  • "Oh, Mr. Merrick. You're not an elephant man at all." "No?" "No, you're Romeo" I just want to cry.

  • How was the john merrick born? I dont really understand the beginning with the elephant and how would that happen from normal parents?

  • @sophieisfabulus

From what I understand, when the mother was four months pregnant some wild elephants (where they came from, I don't know) knocked her over and I think stepped on her. I guess that incident caused damage to the fetus and caused him to grow in a different way.

  • @firedragonsage88

No that is not what happened. That story with the elephants was just a creation to make sense of his condition. He had possibly Proteus Syndrome and neurofibromitosis type I.

  • Damn, now when i watch this movie I feel ashamed on how we all do this treating people who are just different like crap..WHY DO WE DO THIS!!

  • don't you just want to shoot that night watchman. what a prick,

actor does a fine job at playing a villain.

  • god, i love anne bancroft and anthony hopkins. they are so fucking magnificent. and john hurt. damn. such a great group of actors.

  • That guy in the hat really needs to get a life. Doesn't he have better things to do than tap on windows and bring screaming women into Mr. Merrick's room?

  • I love Anne Bancroft!

  • after all he was human.

  • This is flashbacks to when he was staying in a work house. The workhouses in england were shity and the people that stayed there were some odf the worse. His dreams of being beaten up and harrased because of his deformity contibuted to a lot of menatal scars. Merric expereiced these nightmares of his past abuse. Kinda like a POW in a POW camp still having nihtmares of the ordeal. Or anyone wgho has been abused still having nightmares of that abuse.

  • I would have very much liked to meet this gentleman.

  • Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww that was beautiful...Mrs. Kendall's words "you are not an elephant man at all, you are romeo" it made me smile....see there are people out there who can look at a deformed person and give them kindness.

  • this man had more beauty and innocence than most people of today society.

  • I think that John Merrick is in heaven with a face as handsome as his soul today

  • Is that Mrs. Robinson?

  • @TheHansky Yup! She's beautiful in this movie!

  • Merrick has beautiful eyes.

  • Despite the face, he's got beautiful eyes.

  • @InspectorKaramazov In real life, the real Joseph Merrick (which was his real name - not John) - he was said to have really beautiful dark brown eyes.

  • Despite the face, he's got beautiful eyes.

  • Despite the face, he's got beautiful eyes.

  • lol i love the way he talks

  • what are those guys in his dream with no shirts on, pushing that apparaty and why?

  • "You're not an elephant man at all"

    "You're Romeo"

    <3

  • is that really joesph merrick or an actor?

  • @fluffybuffy101 an actor, it's anthony hopkins. This movie was made in the 1980s, and joseph hopkins lived in the 1800's...

  • @fluffybuffy101 unfortunately merrick was not alive for this film. this is the actor john hurt

  • IMO one of the best lines in the movie "'if you have a chill i could close the windows"

  • 7:48- that Nurse is right. It became trendy to meet him and it was like he was back in the freak show, only under better conditions of course. Did they ave cameras then? Is there a pic. of what Jon Merich really looked like?

  • well they had cameras but i wouldnt know if they had a picture of him

  • @Messmaster08 they do

  • @scumgod13 just look up Joseph Merrick on wikipedia. there are pics there, intresting story.

  • RIP Joseph Merrick youre with God now :) . Such a gentleman and kind human being. I must buy a DVD of this movie as its worth it.

  • I feel so bad about him what a sweet guy and just like the tree man why make fun of him

  • what a sweet man.

  • The nurse was a bitch. Are you all serious? She said he wasn't capable of learning and was a brick wall.. this guy was a poet and smart as hell. A wall aint got shit on Merrick

  • I agree with the nurse, she's firm/cold to everyone, and in that sense, she treated Merrick like any other patient. She really cares for him. I think the actress was a wonderful vistor, really sincere - others, it's obvious the reason they're going.

  • The head nurse is the true savior of the movie. She's right. Merrick just passed from one exploiter to another in a sense. She knows that humans are human despite what they look like or where they come from or what they've done. A true nurse. A true mother.

  • @Chuckjagermeister

which one is the head nurse...the young cutie?

  • @Dontutouch no the old one

  • @Chuckjagermeister Well, he died because the pressure through the pillow on his head cut off his windpipe, so he could not breath if he lied down like "normal" people, however, he wanted to sleep lieing down so desperatly, that he just tried it, and suffucated in his sleep. So sad.. :'(

  • @KittyKazooTV that is what people have thought for a while, but in the recent documentary, doctors have studied the skeleton, and they now think that when he laid backwards, he snapped his neck and cut off the blood supply to his head and he dies instantly. The doctor ruled the asphyxiation theory as impossible, because you can't suffocate yourself, as you can't drown yourself.

  • @Chuckjagermeister I agree with you absoulutely...most people only tend to show kindness or charity when it is only "Public" kindness or charity....better to be honest than to put forth the pretense.

  • I'm sure he appreciated her treating him like a human being, they way he should have always been treated. :)

  • This movie is beautyful.

John Marrick was a good man.

    God bless him.

  • a true gentleman that mr. merrick

  • Truth,hope love.

  • i LOVE this movie.

    i mean..

could SOMEONE show me a movie

    ( not a disney)

That does NOT say "Sex" in a little part..

here its so romantic and you could cry because of how they treated hem like dirt!

  • Awe, I thought it was the sweetest thing when she said he was Romeo.

  • may some one please explain

to me why a woman is screaming

    from the elephants?

  • she was knocked down while on safari...and it was an old english belief that if a woman was scared by any type of animal while pregnant, the baby would resemble the animal...however, in the movie this is compounded with the face the myrick has neurofibromatosis...

  • thank you so much for explaining this

    to me(:

    it was a great help

  • ur welcome for sure. it is a great movie eh? that should be fact...not face...in my previous response...

  • indeed it is a great movie.

i have not cried at any movie

but I sure did in this one.

i wish that every person can see

this movie. this movie is just

    so amazing

yes, i agree with you. it should be a fact.

  • It is because he looks like an elephant ( or as they think he does)

    So its like a trauma..

  • this movie is very moving.

  • She' so sweet to him! ^-^

  • I love it when he starts reading from the book. That is one of the most beautiful scene in the entire movie.
