Manual is more durable, less maintenance, cheaper, and more fun to drive, and gives you better fuel milage better torque. automatic is smoother, faster shifting, and delivers more proper gear ratio per engine rpm and vehicle speed. the new double clutch autos like bmw invented is the best over all. it uses gears and counter shafts just like a manual, but shift automatically using a double wetclutching system. that is the way to go for sure.

I like this argument, I'm going to side with a manual purely because I find it more fun to drive. To me autos just feel like stop and go and with a manual i can enjoy the drive so much more

@tnguyen318 Its not a matter of moving backward in technology. Manuals have evoloved significantly since autos were introducted. Its like lockers vs electronic traction control. Yes the electronics are newer and easier to use but the older technology gives more control and performance.

Just out of curiousity are the people who don't like manuals able to drive them? It seems to me that once you learn you can't go back.

It's brainwash. You've been brainwashed about stick-shifts. They are old technology. About your question, I don't know who dislikes stick-shifts. I don't. I'm just saying a good number of times they get tiring and annoying. If you can't go back then I guess you really "enjoy" stick-shifts.  To me, it's enjoyable when you choose to enjoy it. Not an every moment thing. Don't even know why companies are still making them for everyday cars.

@and2244rew i agree with you. people who loves automatic doesn't really know how to drive a manual (90% of them). you can't really say you know how to drive until you really know how to drive a manual trans. car. if you're out on the woods and you drained out your bat for whatever stupid reasons, you won't be able to start your automatic w/o cables + working bat. plus, power and performance, manual is better. mountains, zig zag roads, it's a pain in the ass with automatics

@ayawlex why are zig zaggy road more painful with an auto? wouldnt it be worse with manual since you might have to downshift. I know that the auto gearbox would downshift a lot on a zig zaggy road and would wear out the gearbox fast. But would it affect the driver?

@landraider101 well, for experienced drivers as well as on my experience (i'm driving an auto trans currently), it's a pain in the ass to switch back and forth from "low gear" (too slow) to "drive" (too fast sometimes) and you'll burn out your disc brakes with that. in manual, you can "engine brake" or putting the gear let's say 2nd gear to not let the car go too fast and not too slow while minimizing burning out of the disc brakes. same as zig zag roads, you have more control of the engine.

@ayawlex you can do the same with auto cars...nowdays most autos have 1st and 2nd gear and even 3rd. You wont chew threw your disk brake on an auto unless you are going down a steep hill for a long time and you arent using the 2nd gear instead of putting on on drive. Most people wont know about the function of these gears on autos even yet!

As some people have said it, if you have the money, and you want it easy, an automatic is the way to go. It's complex, more expensive, and it (not you) drives your car, but for some the convenience is well worth it.

A manual isn't easy, but it gives you control, it's cheaper, simpler, easier to fix/maintain, and easier on the fuel. Since I use my vehicle for both commute and light wheeling, I choose the manual.

i LOVE manual shifts! there lighter, more relyable, help you focus more on actualy driveing so your less likely to have an accident, fun, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and cheaper to fix. they also have a big advantage when you drive in the snow. cause when the goin gets slippy, you can just push in the clutch and thats the most traction you can posibly get around a slippery turn. :)

I aggresively chose a Stick Shift Car over an Automatic. Come to think of it, it was from non-sense reasoning. I want people to go Automatic because it's much less balogny. From my experience stick shifts you have to repair the clutch all the time. In performance, Paddle Shifters and Push Button Shifting is equal if not better than stick shifting. There's a Delay. I think that boring stuff is fake. You have fun driving your stick shift everyday? I don't see it. To me it's a Hassle.

@tnguyen318 ive been driving my manual for like 5 years, and i love it. couldnt ask for nothing better. and the cluch is only supposed to be changed after you learn how to drive it, and every 5 to 10 years. my clutch is perfectly fine for 5 years. my car makes 22 mpg. i make it go 50mpg sometimes. i only put gas every once a month. i make better gas mileage than my neighbors electric hybrid. is not boring it just depends on the person. one of my frinds hates manuals obviously because his lazy!

Certainly people do like driving stick shifts for some reason. Unless its needed, I don't think there are really other reasons why stick shifts should dominate the automobile market. Even for those who seek "fun" in driving, Fun Factor in my opinion is only 25%. Cool to me was 50%. 1st gear in the everyday stick shift car lags.

@tnguyen318 not to be mean, but if you had a stick shift you would know or maybe youve had one i dont know. but i guess not everyone is made to drive stick shift. but Manuals is so rare that you get problems, the only thing you have to worry about. is basic maintenance. like, oil, spark plugs, the tires, water, air filter, refrigerant, and clutch. basic stuff. but if you know how to drive it, and drive careful every day. dont have to worry about suspension or transmission ever! lol

If the automatic is a normal automatic transmission, you don't have constant power. It's still the same principle as a manual - you have only one clutch. If it was a double clutch semi-automatic, then that would be a completely different case. I've driven quite a lot off-road, in heavy machines (6x6, 8x8, 10x10) though, and in the worst-case scenario, the automatics in those have a one second delay between gear changes. That's why the automatic of the convoy was always the one to get stuck.

@ipod4info Manuals get better gas mileage and better performance. Usually about 10%. Which is a huge difference when you're on a drag strip. I've never raced an automatic on the strip before. That's because no one I've raced was dumb enough to race against manuals. ie: A 1991 Firebird Formula 305tpi AUTOMATIC has about 200 horsepower stock. The manual version of the same year, make, and model gets around 230 horsepower. Plus, how are you going to impress a girl with a girls car? AKA an Automatic

i am sixteen and quite new to driving but i do prefer to drive stick. driving automatic is boring. i dont like just using gas and break. also, driving stick shift give you a certain level of manlieness. if you're a guy and drive an automatic mustang or camaro or any car of that status, you are a straight up pussy.
