@MeBenHalpin I so looked forward to their meeting but I was disappointed really Seemed that Bet was very bitter hostlile and really pushed Rita's buttons She was just not the same old Bet really
@ohwell94 Me too, but you knew lot of old wounds were gonna be dug up, especially Bet's bitterness towards Rita for not investing the capital to help her buy into The Rovers, she tried at times Bet in these scenes to pretend that she didn't care about losing out, as it was just tatty background pub, but she wasn't fooling anyone especially Rita, that pub had been her life for 25 years, from the day she first stepped behind that bar as young woman in 1970.
@MeBenHalpin I know but it was just really hard for me to see Bet being such a hard faced cow when back in the day she never seemed to let life get her down she always bounced back with a smile and never really held a grudge! She was just so different from the Bet we all loved
@ohwell94 I agree, Bet had many kicks in the teeth in her younger days, huge percentage of the time usually down to fella's treating her like dirt, but she always bounced back, next day she back behind that bar, with big smile and a joke for the punters, as the pub and the locals were what kept her going, just feel the day she lost out on buying The Rovers in 1995,part of her died, as it was nearly half her life being flushed away in that one moment.
@MeBenHalpin I am with you there When she lost the Rovers I think right there she felt old? This was her one and last chance especially because that was her home for so long She realized she would just drift along for the rest of her life and felt Rita cheated her out of it I think so I can understand her bitterness in some ways I just didn't like seeing it I prefered her riding off in that cab with a smile Kinda spoiled her image for me during this
@ohwell94 Think she felt that both Rita and Vicky cheated her out of holding on to the one and true place she could call home, as neither would invest the capital needed to finance the deal, if she didn't have the pub, what would she do?, it really tore her apart missing out on that deal, but she held brave face right up until that last scene, when the taxi arrived to collect her, as that was Bet. Your right though, it wasn't nice to see Bet riding away in a taxi, feeling she had nobody.
@MeBenHalpin Vicky was the one who really P'Od me there! I could kinda see Rita's point in a business sense and it was sad to see that all those 2 had been thru to part that way but Vicky was just insulting and adding salt to the would buying her a house and pensioning her off? little bitch!
@MeBenHalpin but I did love that Rita gave as good as she got I heard a good one Guys slug it out go for a beer after but women will hold a grudge till death and beyond ( too too true! But as a woman and as I get older I feel life is too short for that now
Bet lynch was a real strong character its such a shame you don't get great characters like that in coronation street these days what a legend Julie Goodyear is a fantastic actress first class acting.
"Any aftershave on your dressing-table?" - God, what a great line! I loved Goodyear's little quips at Bet. She just needed the writing to back her up, and the actors (Knox is one of the few on her level). A great soap opera is a great ensemble and every single character needs to be drawn with care, conscience and imagination. Goodyear's contributions to the credibility of soap opera in Britain are absolutely outstanding - give her the depth in writing and vision, you are watching a true artist.
Phil Collinson - Sort yourself out mate and get the legend that was Bet Lynch back on Coronation Street! You can also stop your scriptwriters trying to tarnish the classic character by stopping stupid comments made by c**p current characters. Example - Graeme Proctor when shown a picture of Bet, Mavis and Rita in a July 2010 episode said of Bet "who is the Drag Queen?" Totally out of order that is!
@prettyyounggirl1918 Well Emily and Betty are paid on a scene by scene basis these days,so I don't think they're rolling in it.But they are both quite good actresses and Corrie would be strange without them.
@prettyyounggirl1918 Just remember that the cast of Coronation Street work very hard, but are very well paid.Plus it is only secure long term for a few of them.Look now Ashley has been axed after 15 years,Claire after 7.But I have to say Roy has worked extremely well. There is definitely more to explore with Roy,Eileen,Norris and John.
@prettyyounggirl1918 Best characters are definitely Norris,Roy,Janice,Hayley,Eileen,Claire and John.
Roy is my personal fav as there is plenty to explore with that character. And I am almost certain when the other long serving characters are long gone,Roy will still be on our screens, for many, many years to come.
You're absolutelty right. This had all the quality of Shakespeare and the real depth of the dialogue is probably and sadly lost on on newer viewers of the street who are not familiar with the history concerned. The converstation is a real examination of charactors, mutual feelings and a postmorten of the history they shared. And the occasional and unexpected acid tongued remarks are delivered with perfect timimg by both B and R!
I agree, xDanotchka. The Coronation Street women are brilliant and are very watchable and very entertaining as well.
Thank you to all the actresses, writers, directors, producers and everyone else who make the show possible and believable as are the characters.
Bet's 2002 hairstyle looks much better than that terrible beehive one. She has had that beehive look years before, all the way up to 1995 when she first left and then she had that look again in 2003.
Rita's never afraid to do battle Barbara Knox is a great actress though i'm not old enough to remember the days of Elsie Tanner, from what i've seen of her damn she was the Queen of the street but Rita (tied with Raquel) is definatly second No soap does strong women like Corrie there's been the likes of Madge Bishop, Peggy Mitchell, Kim Tate, Pat Butcher, Bernice Blackstock, Helen Daniels, Dot Cotton, Kat Slater etc. but none would stand up against the Coronation st. women folk now and then lol
Possibly one of the BEST scenes from any soap opera, this scene had everything: Love, hatred, jealousy, humour.... two iconic characters (and actresses) crossing paths once more... I'm so glad Julie Goodyear returned to film these scenes, characters like Bet never change, and sooner or later she would have come back, well done to the writers for creating this simply stunning piece of TV, I can honestly say this is one of my all time favourite TV scenes ever.
well it would be interesting to see if she comes back for Betty's funeral her and some of the other old faces
