Actually, this was the first song they sang on this episode. "Tijuana Jail", their second number, expanded into a typically "wacky" Benny comedy sketch,"South of the Border", with everyone winding up in a Mexican jail (and featuring Mel Blanc's "Little Mexican" character {"Si...Sy...So.."}).
I belive this came from the Jack Benny Program (not Show) that also had the Trio sing "Tijuana Jail" earlier. This song closed out the show. Great number done in the usual fine manner of this group.
This episode of Jack Benny, Janurary 29, 1965 - my birthday. I graduated from high school that year and The Kingston Trio was simply THE group we listened to (and saw whenever possible). They inspired our generation and because of them the "folk era" was ushered in and I learned to play a guitar, which I still do. I met them once, the Shane/Reynolds/Stewart incarnation. "Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that" - Bob Dylan.
Whenever I hear this song, I get sad, about a country, and a life that is gone forever. I listen to them, and remember my youth. We can never recapture that time, but in watching this, we can visit those days again. This fills my heaart with sadness, and joy at the same time. Please don't take it away!
The Trio was said to be "...more than a musical group - It was a phenomenon!" by the people at Martin Guitars. The Kingston Trio featured Martin guitars on covers of their record albums without any compensation, and ended up making Martin THE American folk-music instrument of choice.
I have a 2 CD set by the KT....It is probably my favorite CD's in my entire collection along with one by the "Serendipity Singers"..People who haven't discovered the fantastic, humorous, energetic world of what is termed "folk music" really is missing out on a great slice of Americana...I also love the "Limeliters" and Glen Yarborough.
@uscgccampbell I have an awesome 4-CD set called "The Capitol Years." I treasure it as you probably do yours. I loved the Limeliters too & another group that many scoffed at, The New Christy Minstrels.
hello there thank you for posting this great song one of many that are great works from a great group . my grandfather was one fo the many engineers that work ed with them and I was lucky to be able to see them record one ofthere songs and wow god bless the kingston trio for all there great music and talent and I hope that wherever they are now they are fine all the best and keep these great videos coming
I love the Trio beyond words. They really laid the foundation for the folk genre, along with the Weavers. Blessings to Bob. Glad you're still hanging in there-must be all that clean living! (ha)
This is amazing!!!! Nick is just belting it out. Moved to tears like others here. Thank you for posting, I just came from watching their last performance together on another video.
I get shivers every time I hear this song...having left emotional impressions when way back, I listened to all the KT songs! They combined ballads with high energy...so it didn't sound like soft folk singing but fun dynamic singing. I need to pull out my many albums of them and listen again. Thanks!
Call it what you like. The KT, PPM.... lead me from childhood to adulthood, guitar in hand, singing Stewart, Seeger and Dylan. Thank them all so very much.
the chords are all there on that tenor guitarist playingit through, just grab a tenor guitar chord book and look at what he is doing! Best the little guy is the leader anyway, he is leading hte group with the chords. There they are go get em!
I always find the Kingston Trio funny in that they are considered a "folk" group in that the song and their performance were pretty stylized. I like them a lot. Even three or four decades later, when you listen to the old musicians from the mountains or in the cities, the music or the performances were never as polished.
They became Folk Singers because that was what Capitol Records decided they would be called. Works for me...John Stewart referred to the KT as "Folk-Singing Frat Boys"...works for me too!
Wow! That is the way to look at the KT. They came out of the same line as the Four Freshman and the Lettermen [sp?] though they sung standards and pop. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. The world finally makes sense.
Man, what a pleasant suprise! Back around 1982, I was flipping through the channels and tuned in just in time to hear "I'm going home"! I love youtube!
What is it about this clip? Somehow very moving. Maybe it's just hearing their voices reach out of the past against the backdrop of today's troubled world. Goin' home... As these wonderful men fade into history, we are left with a few haunting images of their youth and exhuberance. The relatively poor quality of this clip only adds to its effect. Thank you, Kingston Trio, and godspeed.
For the record: Dave Guard (the guy on the left) died in 1991. Nick Reynolds' obituary appeared in the newspapers on October 3, 2008. As of this writing--October 4, 2008--Bob Shane is still alive.
Actually, The guy on the left was Nick Reynolds, who passed away on 10/3/2008. On the right was John Stewart who passed away 1/19/2008. Dave Guard died in 1991.
Bob Shane's still around but retired from performing.
@kingofsitups I know what you mean. I keep coming back to play it again. I even di a little research on the song and it's very interesting. It was written by a guy living the hobo life at the time named Fred Geis
the general idea I have got is D-Bm-G-A7sus-A7.......but i am dumb when it comes to this stuff. Usually if I post something wrong someone that really knows will correct it and yell at me. Any takers? it seems like a F#m belongs somewhere...or an Em......but i cant make it sound right HELP?
This performance was recorded here and live in Las Vegas and is available on vinyl disk only (I have a copy). It is not available on any tape or CD. A really rare and treasured find.
Not true! You can easily find the album "Nick-Bob-John" on CD (track 12). See Amazon. The live performance you are referring to, recorded at the Sahara Tahoe (not LV), was Once Upon A Time, also available on CD. Lots of people tried to match the KT sound, but no one ever topped them.
I've been looking for this clip for years. Thank you for posting. This song was always sung before intermission at their concerts. My all time favorite trio song.
was this recorded with a washing machine?

@Dunkleosteus9 Fred Geis, who died in January 2009, wrote the song. I don't know much more about him; a few things come up when I do a Google search.

I think Mr, Geis was actually a hobo at some time,

This is great to see thanks.
They played their first paid gig in
this California kids hometown.
I was a young kid at the time but
remember when they were a big hit
when the went to SF & The Hungry I
& when Tom Dooley came out &
the folk Trio from down on the
SF Peninsula Folk scene became Famous & led the way, so on many levels
I love this.

This was a 45 that the Trio put out and was only a minor hit.
Lloyd Thaxton had them sing it on his show about this time.
Jack and Lloyd had better taste than many of us!

Does anybody know how to play this song on guitar? please let me know.
CaptainCTD 2 years ago
@CaptainCTD If you want to play it in C (the key in which I play it), the chords are:
C-Am-Dm7-G
C-Em-Am-F-G
Verse and chorus are the same; evidently the chorus was originally the second verse to the song.

But the music is definitely folk music, so they probably should be called a folk group.
