Thank you for posting this. I was born in Trinidad, I grew up in British Guyana and my grandmother was from Dutch Guiana (aka Suriname). I've always loved this song but I haven't heard it or thought about it in years until a Persian-American guy started singing it at work today in California. Life is funny that way.
Absolutely beautiful! Sounds like kompas! I was born in Chicago to be exact, but I from Barbados and Panama. I big up all those who hail by lineage from Africa, and that includes our bretheren in Surinam. Thank you so much for posting this. Yet another reason to feel proud. And that's real talk. God is so good. Look what He allowed us to do on the back of slavery and white supremacy!! You can't keep a good man (or woman) down!! RESPEK!
This song warms my heart. I love it! Beside the original, my faborite remake is the one by Yakki Famirie, a not so well known Kaseko band from Surinam. Square One and Allison Hinds did a good job too, but made it more soca like. With Yakki Famirie you still get that strong African essence. Yeeeeees!
Lead singer reminds me of Denise Belfon. As a Lingustics major who has studied Creole languages of the Americas especially those of the Caribbean, this is the first song I was exposed to during the 4 week study of Sranan.

Great song with great pictures. No matter wheter we are black, brown or yellow, we afro-surinam, hindoestani and Javanese people have build thid wonderfull country, SURINAME !
although I don't understand what is being sung, being Caribbean I feel such an intrinsic almost spiritual experience with this song. A strong pulling back to my caribbean roots.
@catherineangel77 I agree we all have African roots and It's cool to see what are carribbean cultures derived from and I thank Alison for exposing us to this culture when I was only a little girl when she re-recorded the song. I'm going to download both versions since i haven't heard this song since the late 90's!!! Africa Unite!! Spread Love through music <3
The autor says it is a bush-negro group because they were ran away slaves, that lived in the bush/jungle for years. Surinamese people call them the "bosnegers" which means bush-negro's if you translate it. In Suriname they also call them Djuka, but that's more rude I think. Some people also know them as Maroons or Marron.. So what I'm trying to say is, I think the autor just translated it literally from Dutch, and didn't meant it bad. I hope I made it a bit clear.
If i'm not mistaken, they're from Suriname. Suriname is in South America.
Some of people get it confused and say it might be either from Suriname or Guyana because before Suriname's independence, the country was known as Dutch Guyana.
It's in a dialect that's spoken by people who's ancestors are African slaves. Most of the time these songs have kinda explicit lyrics, if you know what I mean ;-)
A big thank you!
