  • @filmftw3 He was supposed to be the "straight" guy on the show. He wasn't supposed to be super funny on the show. But it works with all the characters. And he doesn't suck, he's a good comedian. Like the pajama observation it's totally true they look like suits. The sock bit is classic. Guess you don't know good comedy!

  • Seinfeld's all about timing. His biggest weakness early on was his inability to sync his timing with the crowd. You'll notice in his early work, how people won't laugh much the first couple minutes.

  • @SECTION324 He's funny, just not always laugh out loud funny. Like the greeting card part, "Here's another couple having a better relationship than us" I mean it's so true. So he's more of an observationist who happens to be funny sometimes.

    Carlin is culture, intelligence, insight and truthful. What culture are you talking about? About half of (not all) American tv is based on British/French/Japanese series of tv shows or vids. Nice try sparky, but you've been sold and you've bought a myth.

    There were exceptions, MASH and a very few others come to mind.

You're kidding, except for the blues which was the result of America enslaving generations of people Britain has forced your recording companies to allow creative people to sometimes get out from under their "corporate" thumbs. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd & other Brit bands expanded modern music. Sports, sissy nfl isn't a sport, rugby, soccer are sports.

The Japanese don't invent anything. The Germans do have their moments, but you should really look at the American inventions over the years.

    Idealism? What is that? A feigned belief in a system you neither support or are willing to fight for?

    The Founding Fathers, MLK, Kennedy, Lincoln were idealists and were willing to work to change things for "everyone" not just a few.

    You would do well to research some of the founders thoughts on financial corporations who have bastardized everything you mentioned in a quest for profits.

    I get no pleasure from saying this, but America has sadly idealized "greed" for too long.

  • @HugoBossUnzipped Not even close to half. I will say that most shows are just rehashed old premises, but I wouldn't say half of our shows are foreign. Things also work the other way, there are some American shows been "ripped" off in foreign markets. Anything to bash America though, I s'pose. It's the trendy thing for intellectual Europeans to do.

    Jerry is great at the observational comedy. George did more on language, politics, and of course fart jokes

  • I have got to admit I never quite know how to respond to Jerry Seinfelds stand up, and in many ways it is in a similar vein to the Seinfeld t.v show as one would expect. A lot of the stuff is'nt exactly new and are pretty standard sorts of observations, even back then, that a middle of the range comedian might make. There is also a slight unctiousness to the act I also dislike. However the delivery and some of the spins he puts on his observations are actually pretty funny. I am conflicted.

  • @BelatedCommiseration Seinfeld practically invented the style that is now seen as hacky, simply by being so good and being copied by lesser comedians throughout the eighties. SNL made fun of that already in the eighties, where a recurring sketch featured 3 or 4 Seinfeld clones backstage at a comedyclub.

  • @potshed I didn't really either but it was funny. I never liked the show Seinfeld but it's kinda nice hearing someone's thoughts and observations. And the absurdity is on a lower level. It's not random and outlandish like half of the crap today.

  • Jerry was the cleanest Jew in Hollywood for Comedian. His standup was never distasteful and alot of viewers who were quite prude and being shocked by a comedian not cracking a joke with crude humor good on him though he wasnt my taste of comedy as his show was alot better then his stand up :)

  • I think being a comedian who uses clean language is a dying aspect of the art form. Jerry may not always make guffaw, but I laugh more than I expect too.

  • @grahamgrider -Right. Jerry Seinfeld was funny & likeable. He relates to people in modern life. In a way that a Bill Cosby or Bob Newhart did in the past. Not through screaming anger and 4 letter words, but by reflecting everyday stuff & the absurdity of it all.

  • Seinfeld is the most overrated comedian of all time. Some people just have a lucky star over their head, and I guess he's one of them. He created a niche of every day, mundane observations, but I don't ever recall cracking up at any of his jokes, the way I did Rodney Dangerfield (peace be upon him) or George Carlin (ditto). Jerry: you may have mega millions but you should know that you're the most overrated comedian of all time!

  • @CambridgeHeights Although David's writing was definitely one of the largest parts. You have to give credit where credit is due as well. Seinfeld was a collaborative effort. There have been shows with great writing that just haven't been able to pull it off. With the wrong casting this show wouldn't have been the same either. Seinfeld has his moments of standup but he definitely is not one of the standup greats. Just doesn't have the presence or material

  • Ok, it was 1981... a different kind of comedy from later days. But even for then, this material was weak. Jerry definitely got better later on. Every comedian has their bad days, and this looks like one of his.

  • It's funny because Jerry Seinfeld is a terrible comedian.

  • Every comedian recycles jokes, especially when they're constantly doing shows and at different cities (on camera no less). Plus you have to imagine every joke, is constantly refined, re-timed, re-worded, being delivered to different audiences. It's called being professional, and honing your craft. It must be hard to come up with original material, and make it work. They say people fear public-speaking worse than death; just imagine for a second how nerve-racking being a comedian would be.

  • What a master. He was already there by 81. He had it. And he had to earn it here. That crowd was dead ass; they weren't giving him anything. Today you have no idea who can't work a crowd or not, since they are prodded and prepped by marketing manipulators. They clap and cheer for every stupid thing, especially in LA. In the northeast I suppose they are still pretty brutal.
