  • There is a voice muting silencer trick mentioned on the intervoiceonline forum in the home remedy thread. Muting, you still get the imaginations but no audible garbage, which helps, totally eliminates the confrontations, attacks, slander.

  • I found this video when searching for videos about schizophrenia, and it's truly fascinating, tthanks for uploading :) I wish we could have an update on Ruth's condition/life....

  • I feel so happy now...

for a long time up to about a year ago now I was seriously considering going to see a doctor because I kept on thinking people were hearing my thoughts and whispering the things I was thinking and giggling in a really creepy way... out of feer of being committed I rode it out and it's not really a problem any more. I guess it is much harder for some people, especially if you have a voice actually telling you to do things - I guess there arn't a lot of Rufus's out there.

  • Thanks very much for this jenni560.

I Youtubed Dr May after hearing an interview with him on Radio New Zealand National (public radio) a couple of nights ago. Very interesting indeed!

And my, Ruth Wilson's performance in this is honestly about the best acting I've ever seen.

    Great stuff.

  • this was powerful and inspiring! go ruth and rufus!

  • The approach Dr Rufus uses helps to conquer whats going on inside but for me medication would still have to have been the first step. The voices and other symptoms were overwhelming and only hindered the psychological aspects of my recovery.

  • AWESOME!

  • sorry the acting wasn't quite convincing enough for me (clue... to much direct eye contact) . however a great concept and done with a lot of integrity. well done

  • yeah it dawned on me pretty early, just so many tell-tale signs

  • Rufus is a very understanding, loving, and wise psychologist.

  • CONGRATULATIONS Ruth & Rufus for taking your own power back from each of your evil monsters. It would of course be best Ruth could rid herself of him & his mental &/or telepathic visitations entirely. I'd protect myself & demand of God & the Universe, that only those of the christed white light be permitted to reach me at any given time, & then put it behind me & pray for the best. :)

  • It's confusing that the suggestion of finally knowing the real experience or alleged intial trauma etc. is some break-through for closure with psychotherapy.

How can it be that simple? I guess I'm not realizing the comparison as to how simple her trauma/loop was to my own "initiation" I don't see the " Ah Ha!" humor in it either. Even though, it appeared to be simply self doubt and insecurities. The fear of inadequacy? Is it always so simple? I guess so.

  • And after all this we are no nearer knowing what is really going on in this girl's life. It's my bet that she has just fallen out with her boyfriend, got drunk, got into trouble and done a deal with the courts,,, or something like that. She's had some basic growing up to do. Rufus May is just a chump who is used by psychiatry to give itself a pretty image.... And as for voices?,,, Forget it!,,, And don't censor my remarks this time jenni560.

  • I agree with JakeBdfd to an extent. The fact that it was "played" by an actress though i understand why, takes alot of its accuracy away. Also, i feel that theres lots and lots of cases where this just wouldnt work due to the time span. The reason why people go into hospital is because theyre in crisis and they cannot keep themselves safe, so surely to leave them to fend for themselves in an environment they can no longer cope in for days on end is not theraputic and is quite irresponsible?

  • listen, the way i see it is if you have not experienced schizophrenia or psychoses you have no right to even speak about the illness unless your an educated honest and caring individual. i hope i was not rude in anyway.

  • The waterfall/street 'fight'/tree-talking looked naff and he came out with patronising statements which had nothing to do with any notion of therapy or exploring/validating the meaning of her voices. He contradicted himself by saying people like Dr.Turner are disrespectful and don't listen or try to understand, yet he stopped her talking about her moon/wolf ideas and The Cause being bullying just felt too simplistic.

  • The catholic church would have burned people like her and others at the stake before the enlightenment. So how is what you are suggesting any less inhumane? Monocultural thinking like yours keeps beautiful people like Ruth from growing and believing in themselves. People get like this because of the sack-of-lies that they are given with conflicting worldviews of truth: science at one hand, church on the other. It may be simplistic but there is an option c: Just Be

  • here here

  • @rockafeladave science is a religion, at least it's definitely my religion, but god exists in it too

  • @The3rdPlateau

Science is the pursuit for the truth in tangible things.

Philosophy is also the pursuit for the truth, but its intangible.

Both lead to God, because He is Truth.

  • seriously...youre comment here is absolutely disgraceful...every person deserves to get on with their life! she seems fine to me. as long as its controlled it doesnt matter what job she does. she's a competent woman and doctor now, as she says, she's in control. rufus may was a schizophrenic but if you saw him walking around the streets now woulod you believe he was? simple answer NO! i agree with rufus...labels should not be allowed to be given out.

  • im a schizophrenic but i act in a way that noone knows, and theres no point in telling anyone unless they can help or are a trusted friend, and telling people would only fuck me up in society. sad truth

  • dickhead shut the fuck up!

  • I hope she continues seeing a therapist. I don't hear voices or take meds and always think it's wise to have someone to talk to. I'm not too convinced she is cured by this method either...

  • The point is that its not about being cured, I think we can get too bogged down with the idea that people have to become normal to be happy in life and for some people this isn't going to happen...and why should it?

  • True. psych meds are harsh but some people find their meds calm them, and help them function better. It depends on the person.

  • I agree LeeAnne I think there has to be a balance as with most things in life and it absolutely depends on the person. I believe people should have complete choice in such important matters and that all options for therapy/ support should be made available to them. Unfortunately at the moment this does not happen and more often than not people are simply medicated without real understanding of their difficulties and without regard to ill effects of dependence and side effects.

  • @jenni560 Your pretty smart : )

  • I'm glad for her but I worry about her in the future. She needs his support and feel that this type of therapy is not right for everyone just as meds is not the right route for everyone. There needs to far more research put into ALL fields of mental illness as this is such a delicate field of medicine that is still very much holds 'shot in the dark' theories to cure or medicate. In short there is no right or wrong treatment, this all depends on the patient.

  • thanks 4 uploading v interesting, am sure having friendly patient support, being taken out in nature, listened to and the meanings analysed helps, along with learning to live with voices.

  • this is such an odd, offbeat documentary because of the fact that an actress is used in place of the real person the film is about, it changes the dynamic in such a way that one is left wondering what the real truth is and what can really be learned in this situation. Still it is somewhat helpful in that Rufus is real and seems caring and competent. It is interesting in another way in introducing Ruth Wilson -- now I want to watch Jane Eyre and see how she compares to Charlotte Gainsborough.

  • Leo Regan good director and Very , very good film for reflection and for some methods of treatment. Psychiatry is not exact science. it is possible to apply the given treatment. But neurology very exact science. There are mistakes - fatal. I want to tell : it is not necessary to waste time on studying of the given sciences if you not a doctor. It is better listen to opinion of yours doctor too.

  • Unfortunately the idea that you can trust your doctor is fatally flawed, doctors make many mistakes and miss a great many things...and thats just physical doctors, a psychiatrists job is based on a fundamentally flawed belief that a persons emotional life can be cured through medical means. and i disagree that studying science is just for doctors we should all be students of science, problem is doctors believe they are masters not students

  • It is very interesting. What would tell in this occasion Leo Regan himself ?

  • Amazing! Being bipolar, and having been in therapy, and on medication for the last two years, this video truly made me hopeful. I am amazed by Ruth's bravery and Rufus's determination to help heal her by using such a progressive approach.

  • Thanks for uploading this! I've been waiting for a chance to watch it for months. Awesome!

  • It's just an hour long programme, there's a lot you don't see and therefore you can't be expected to know the full volume of work that people like Rufus do to try to understand what's happening for a person. Clinical psychologists look for events in a persons life that may have led to or contributed to the current situation and try to gain an understanding of how they might support someone to deal with their difficulties (this among many other things)

  • Rufus May is 'used by psychiatry'?! Given everything in the video how is this possible?

  • Inspiring stuff. It's amazing what genuine love and support can achieve

  • Rufus seems like an awesome person. If there were more people like him in the mental health system, there would be a lot less "sick" people.... Great doc(umentary)

  • well, I really enjoyed that, thanks so much for uploading it =)

  • Hi, Rufus asked me to upload this after a lecture he gave and it's a very important message so feel free to tell others about it too!
