  • This is perfect!

  • Chuck would be very proud of this cover! This was great! LOVE IT!

  • great slap technique, man. spot on.

  • Finally! Somone that actually thumps when they are suppose to. Excellent job. Thanks for posting.

  • Nice and smooth with control, very cool.

  • Nailed it!

  • Awesome. Nothing else need be said.

  • Very well done, all the little details there but not exaggerated.

  • Very nice job. You've got the chops, the feel and exactly the right groove to do this track justice. Furthermore, you're doing it all with a pre-amp and DI . . . it sounds great! The sad thing about your playing is that you make this look and sound so easy, which, as you know, couldn't be further from the truth! Keep up the good work, I hope to see and hear more of your tracking.

  • Well done, thanks.

  • You've got it all- tone, chops, and even the right kind of bass!

  • nice bass. I want that bass. great playing.

  • solid. so solid

  • How about posting a slow version of just the chorus slapping. I have been trying to nail this for years and I think you are the closest on YouTube, Great job.

You can even just send the video to me personally. A bass player friend in need in one indeed! Thanks.

  • nice ghost notes.

  • Excellent. Not only technically proficient, but has great feel and groove.

  • Excellent. Thanks for the uploading your fantastic playing. Great tone too.

  • Thanx for this. I just subscribed, and hopefully this'll help me be a better player again.

  • funkiest bass line ever in my book! great job!

  • That is TIGHT!!!

  • Perfect playing man That 66 fender p bass looks in perfect shape and sounds even better. was that refinished? are you the original owner? what a beutiful tone.

  • Over and over I watch and listen....and after 6 years of trying to learn this part - perhaps one of the 5 greatest bass parts ever recorded - I cannot even come close. I am about to smash my Fender to bits out of frustration...

  • I'm trying to play this song on my bass, its givin me a headache, you;re very good by the way.

  • Great job, my man!

  • Super job! I don't play a P myself, but I love your tone on this. Wonderful. I also love your easy and comfortable left hand approach/movement. Again, super job.

  • I didn't realize the bass part had that two measures there with two simultaneous notes. Is two notes played simultaneously a chord, or does it have another name?

Good job Peg. I'll check out your other covers.

  • Great job. Love that track! Aja is a great album

  • I just got some Sennheiser HD202 headphones, the bass sounds great on these phones. Good job playing!

  • hey mr smooth . always a good vibe watching u play .

  • PERFECT!

  • Nice job. You are the only one who has posted on here to actually play the octave ghost notes during the verse line. I'm still working on the slap pattern during the chorus.

  • Hello from Istanbul,

    Very nice, keep them coming

  • Solid playing man. Sounds real clean too on the playback on my end.

  • Great job! Are you reading music or tab? More! More!

  • Thanks! Reading music, in fact Bassplayer Magazine's transcription.

  • @bassowman Which month/year was the transcription in?

  • Are you sight reading music, tab, self notes? You are very intent while playing!

If NOT playing professionally a loss for all of us! Great job!

  • kick ass man one of the btter ones i have heard of my fav song

  • What do you use for compression?

  • playing is just as beautiful as that bass!

  • Nicely done!! Great tone and flawless meter.

  • you are sexy

  • I can't stop watching this video. ha ha! Really, really in awe of your playing. And I CANNOT believe you are not a professional bass player...wow. =]

  • Awqesome job on this bass line. Incredible skills. Thanks for the video which was very helpful to me for working on this bass line.-GREAT JOB!!!!

  • Did you know Chuck Rainey didn't exactly relish playing with Fagan and Becker? they could be a real pain in the ass....micromanagers.

  • the best here by far, with eyes closed it's impossible to tell the difference between you and Rainey...that took a shitload of work dude. That looks exactly like my 78 P bass.

  • well done, man!

  • Nearly flawless. Hats off !!!!

  • A work of art. Beautiful!

  • I just want to tell you sir, you're the only one NOT butchering this song on youtube. 5/5, near flawless

  • Nice skills, very clean and nicely controlled. No unnecessary string slapping.

  • Cool bass line. Did you hear the story that Donald Fagen didn't want any slap bass on that song and Chuck snuck it in?

  • it's kinda stunning that they didn't notice.

  • Great Playing! This bass line is a testament to how great Chuck Rainey was on this record - so busy, but so perfect. Very nice version of an amazing bass line. I think Chuck really hasn't gotten the cred he's due for Aja.

  • nice p bass.

  • great stuff

  • Did you use roundwounds or flatwound? I know Chuck Rainey used his Fender P strung with flats at that point.

  • I use DR Hi Beam roundwounds.

  • @Wefunkyou Chuck never used flats. I asked him a few years ago.

  • pretty awesome bro ! P bass is "The Sound" !!!

  • what year is that bass? what system are you using? sounds great!

  • The bass is an all original Precision from 1966. Here I run the bass through a Korg Pandora PX4D with quite heavy compression to get a good attack when slapping (and in the plucked parts as well for that matter).

  • I can't help myself. Its so great to see this line. I always had trouble with that descending pentatonic run before the chorus. Now I see. The slapping in my opinion was a mistake. But hey its just my feel. But its part of history.

  • @blunt1 >> The slapping in my opinion was a mistake. . .

Steely Dan told him not to slap, . . but he snuck it in and did anyway, true story.

  • dude you nailed the basslines to one of my favourite songs of all time.

    Thankyou.

  • Really good. But is youtube name "basswoman"? just wondering.

  • Wow!! Astounding smooth and awesome. I so much enjoy your videos each time they come out. Thanks for doing these -- they are very inspirational.

Cheers from High Deserts of Utah!

  • I love the chords during the chorus. Especially the ones at 1:15. That's such a ridiculous turnaround. You don't post the chords up on any website?

  • I don't post the chords. The part you are thinking off is something like: Asus2/C#, C6add9, G, F#

  • that is great bass playing!

  • Excellent!

  • Great playalong!! ANd I agree, terrific sound!! Just curious, are you a professional musician, or is this a sideline for you?

  • Thanks! It's just a side line, for good or bad:-)

  • Brilliant! Thanks for posting this and all your vids... really dig them! Cheers from Hollywood California!

  • Awasome, beautiful sound!!

    What's string used?

  • Thnx! DR Hi Beam 045-100. Turned down the tone control on the bass a bit to get a more flatwound like sound.
