Very nice job. You've got the chops, the feel and exactly the right groove to do this track justice. Furthermore, you're doing it all with a pre-amp and DI . . . it sounds great! The sad thing about your playing is that you make this look and sound so easy, which, as you know, couldn't be further from the truth! Keep up the good work, I hope to see and hear more of your tracking.
How about posting a slow version of just the chorus slapping. I have been trying to nail this for years and I think you are the closest on YouTube, Great job.
You can even just send the video to me personally. A bass player friend in need in one indeed! Thanks.
Perfect playing man That 66 fender p bass looks in perfect shape and sounds even better. was that refinished? are you the original owner? what a beutiful tone.
Over and over I watch and listen....and after 6 years of trying to learn this part - perhaps one of the 5 greatest bass parts ever recorded - I cannot even come close. I am about to smash my Fender to bits out of frustration...
Super job! I don't play a P myself, but I love your tone on this. Wonderful. I also love your easy and comfortable left hand approach/movement. Again, super job.
I didn't realize the bass part had that two measures there with two simultaneous notes. Is two notes played simultaneously a chord, or does it have another name?
Nice job. You are the only one who has posted on here to actually play the octave ghost notes during the verse line. I'm still working on the slap pattern during the chorus.
really, really awesome!! =] I want to learn this SO BADLY! (alas, I've only been playing 2 weeks ha ha!) Steely Dan is the freakin best!! The slapping part on Peg is what made me want to learn bass...great job!
the best here by far, with eyes closed it's impossible to tell the difference between you and Rainey...that took a shitload of work dude. That looks exactly like my 78 P bass.
Great Playing! This bass line is a testament to how great Chuck Rainey was on this record - so busy, but so perfect. Very nice version of an amazing bass line. I think Chuck really hasn't gotten the cred he's due for Aja.
The bass is an all original Precision from 1966. Here I run the bass through a Korg Pandora PX4D with quite heavy compression to get a good attack when slapping (and in the plucked parts as well for that matter).
I can't help myself. Its so great to see this line. I always had trouble with that descending pentatonic run before the chorus. Now I see. The slapping in my opinion was a mistake. But hey its just my feel. But its part of history.
This is perfect!

Cool bass line. Did you hear the story that Donald Fagen didn't want any slap bass on that song and Chuck snuck it in?

it's kinda stunning that they didn't notice.

Did you use roundwounds or flatwound? I know Chuck Rainey used his Fender P strung with flats at that point.

I use DR Hi Beam roundwounds.

@Wefunkyou Chuck never used flats. I asked him a few years ago.

Steely Dan told him not to slap, . . but he snuck it in and did anyway, true story.

I don't post the chords. The part you are thinking off is something like: Asus2/C#, C6add9, G, F#
