How anyone cant or dont like Ali Farka or Ry Cooder is beyond me, seriously. Its soooo erotic and sooo sexy. Especially Ai du! Now that is one super sexual erotic song. I got some memories behind that one! But I love Ali Farka in general. I wish he was still with us, I would anticipate more beauty coming out that instrument as he made love to her plucking them strings man. Ayo Ali, rest peacefully son.
SHOW DOWN! I know this man is dead and gone, but to me his music is alive so that means He is too. I don't think of Ali Farka Toure being deceased. I listen to his music and it could have been recorded years ago, but to a new comer like me. It sound like it was recorded yesterday. His spirit is in his music.
@beerosterm I respect your opinion but it seems so far fetched that I can't seem to make any sense of it. He was a great musician. If you listened to more of his material you'd understand him better. Have a good day

@dentpopcan All right - how about this: Ali Farka Toure is a run of the mill player. His skills are average at best, easily exceeded by any first year student intent on getting better. AFT plays monotonous, repetitive, tribal-based rhythms more appropriate to war dance accompaniment. His playing is derivative, even though others claim it is based on Malian folk music. Boring....There. Is that better?
Vieux is certainly doing his father proud with his own amazing artistry ... How great it would have been to have them both performing at the 2010 African World Cup ... sigh ...
For many of us ... Ali will live on indefinitely ...
If you like Ali, you should check out his son Vieux Farka Toure. Very different both in musical approach and guitar technique. Much more African...works with traditional materials...but you can also see some incredible resemblances, not least of which is the utter and effortless command of the instrument.
Beautiful.Thankyou.I first saw Ali Farka Toure what must be getting on for twenty five years ago in Aldershot of all places.A great musician, sadly missed.
@pesfever It is the n'goni, probably one of the oldest stringed instruments in the world. It apears in engraved cylinder seals from as far back as the Sumerian civilization and in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings, much as it appears today. The fingering technique of the west African n'goni apparently gave rise to the American bluse style. The n'goni player here, Bassekou Kouyate is the absolute master of the modern n'goni. He has a band called "N'goni Ba" and they totally ROCK.
@spikkel70 its called a Ngoni... one of the earliest known stringed instruments still played today... mostly played in Mali, Kouyate is the best recorded master of it. This and the Baloch Surod are my favorite traditional instruments... check out the Balochi surod by Bashir Ahmed I uploaded.
