One of the worlds surfing/windsurfing treasures and its empty. Much warmer than Oregon. Waves very consistant and can get fairly massive with wind and swell all the time. Huge offshore reefs where 12foot waves build forever providing ramps. Some don't break just fade out. Shore is rocky but nothing like Oregon. Taranaki has many good beach coves to disembark from.
