  • I would vote for Shenmue on the Dreamcast - First game to include that kind of scope of interactivity and to include the depth of real life simulation it achieves (for example days passing when not played, taking time and date from the console and becoming night when it was night time meaning certain shops, parts of the game etc. were accesible). The series is unfinished and you will probably struggle to get a copy of it, but still a mile stone of detail not even approached by GTA4.

  • fallout

  • Baldur's Gate 2 and Westwood's Dune 2000.

  • you forgot something... no mmorpg on your list!!! lol

  • Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn.

Best game ever made and very very important if you want to do an RPG.

  • No, the combat is flawed compared to today's standards. Really flawed.

  • Not at all if any then you realy should play Planescape Torment (beter in party interaction and a much more well planed and original aproach to the storyline) or Fallout on excample of what CRPG can and SHOULD aim to be (and pass!).

  • I have to agree with a lot of what you say here, though I must admit my general ignorance of a lot of console stuff/older games doesn't help.

You cover a lot of the genres well, but the conspicuous absentee has to be the RTS genre. There were definitely some watershed moments there that then bled into other games, even into other genres.

Also, you are highly focused on single player titles, is this because you think not much has changed in the online space since doom?

  • I think if what you're going for is a well-rounded list with titles that most people would recognize then this is a very good list. It's a pretty good list even if that's not what you're going for.

  • Wii sports I don't agree with so much. While it is true that they were the first to involve active movement, there isn't a ton of movement, plus all of the game ideas were simply borrowed. Fairly radical, but not really.

  • age of Empires. The best and most radical RTS of its time, it changed everything forever. Every RTS game now is mostly based off of the tech system and counters that AoE created.

  • descent was the epitome of the first person shooter. it was genuinely 3d whereas the rest of the fps at the time really weren't. and it didn't have all the stupid garbage that they kept adding to the other games. no cheese like holding down your jump key that crept into gaming soon after. descent 2 and 3 were not as good as the original.

  • ZELDA! YES! i have every single zelda game and have beaten them at least twice.. except number 1.. why are older games harder? oh well... zelda ftw

  • I love Starfox (Lylat Wars...whatever) it's one of my favorite games...plus is also had splitscreen multiplayer and was the first game with the rumble pack on the N64...

You're missing a very important game series though, Metal Gear Solid! This was the first game to combine revolutionary third person/first person stealth espionage action with an epic amount of storytelling that spanned 5 games. It's not just a game, it's an interactive movie...and no other game has pulled that off.

  • My historically top 10 in no particular order: The Half-Life series The Super Mario series World of Warcraft The Command & Conquer series The Age of Empires series The Monkey Island series Secret of Mana (Seiken Denetsu 2) The Jedi Knight series Sim City 2000 Tetris
  • Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 epic story telling. Even if you don't like dnd games these were 2 of the best games ever made.

  • I can hear your dryer in the back ground

  • Have you played Starfox recently? It really fucks with your head lol.

I played Battletoads not so long ago and the bit with the flying cars really gives you a sore head in this day and age xD

  • I'd say Age of Empires would be pretty significant as well

    just my two pence

  • space invaders, because errrrr its fun

    i feel so clever. :P

  • Wow, i agree with you mostly on this list, it's a great list by the way.

Zelda, one of the best series ever made.

    Pokémon, that was f****ing awesome.

    Goldeneye, game breaking AI.

    Starfox, just a wonderful game.

As you might have noticed, i do own all these games execept Starfox.

But i would like to see on the list:

Black & White, that was a very good game.

Super Smash Brothers, taking a concept, flip it 380 degrees. And still get a very good game.

  • my first networked gaming experience was on doom... changed my whole world.

  • I found the list lacking a vast number of genres for historical posterity. It really ignores watershed games from some of the older studios who set massive game tropes in motion.

Anything from Sierra and Westwood Studios should likely be mentioned. The Zork series of games were a revolution proving that the best games are about the fun and not the graphics. Super Mario Bros is a far better choice than Zelda . And let's not forget the Might and Magic series.

  • Yes a puzzle game such as Tetris. Also how could you forget to mention mario!?!?!

  • I do agrea this list has hit high life of gaming. Do to each one of these game was a idea the ether gave birth to a games style or evoled an old game style into a better style. Game like Golden eye made it so we now have to game our guns in FPS unlike the old stuff of Doom where you bullet magicly found their targets. Still doom is my chose over wolfensine/heritic. Yes Heritic one of the oldest FPS ever. Still sad you did not enclude steath games sence steath being part of games more and more.

  • You should have closed with a barrel roll.

  • i still have my n64 =) also have golden eye

  • brain training not brain age

  • that because its called brain in the US

  • You missed out one of THE games in history of pc games - Tetris, simple concept, tremendous impact.

    Mentionable games:

Unreal and the spin off Tournament

ZackMcCracken, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle - great adventures

Shadow Man - huge world, spooky atmosphere, interesting story

Halo - felt like playing an interactive actionmovie

Civilisation - fun to play and stuff to learn about history - very good concept - used gained knowledge from that game back then in history class.

  • Ah now of all games possibly missed Tetris is the most significant.

    PS Civ is major too.

  • My list was going to be something like: Zelda - for the controls. Ultima Online - MMOs anyone? Wolfenstein 3D - Doom might've been a better choice Dune II - RTS. Myst - first CD game and lots of media (videos, images, sounds). The Elder Scrolls - sandbox series with it's own universe and lore. Street Fighter - solid controls. Mario 64 - 3D platformer Guildwars - architecture and business model. Metal Gear Solid - grandfather of stealth games.

  • I think one that was important was System shock. It's the grand daddy of the atmospheric/horror games. I doubt some games like Resident evil or bishock would exist without it.

Also... like it or not, duckhunt. It's the game that opened up the world of console accessories to the common man.

  • I'm concluded that you don't mean arcade games. However to not include Diablo seems rather blasphemous. WoW was able to bring Grandma and Grandpa to the PC and play a Huntard.

  • "Zelder" brit speak ftw

  • that's 9 games

  • I just watched the part one and three. And I couldn't possibly love you more. :D Haha
