  • excellent,even more than that.

  • I've just watched him playing with the Berliner Philharmoniker, he's incredible !

  • too fast or too slow. too much unpleasant tone. excellent mechanics.

  • I would like to see at least ONE person who disliked this video playing this like Matsuev!

  • @CrazyCziffra Video? I don't see any video

  • So many negative reactions. I can't get it, this guy is so incredible. Listen how he is balance the choids and how precise he's timing is and what a temperament! I can't believe you guys dislike it.

  • @thomasodelago Don't waste time on thinking about them! It must be those whose brain don't get any further than Gaga and the like.

  • wow. decaf please!

  • What can this pianist not destroy? Terrible, one commenter said its original, originality goes its way, musicality, goes another way. To be a good interpreter, you need to be original in your interpretations, but musical along with them. Mr.Matsuev , is original in his interpretations, going outside the circle that most people stick to, but for me personally (Which I am a person that loves when pianists go outside of the circle) he goes way to far. Especially the ending.

  • And poor Horowitz's transcription gets yet another mauling at the hands of tyros...

  • Браво ,браво, недавно слушала в Мариинском его концерт-фантастика !

непостижимо ,как можно достичь такой техники-новые технологии?

  • Yes, it's TOO FAST for my taste.

But, Matsuev I don't think missed one note in the entire piece, and the integrity of every rhythmic passage was maintained. It didn't turn into a mish-mush soup of notes with too much pedal.

    Bravo!

  • Horowitz meant this piece to be played with as much bravura as possible. It isn't a delicate musical piece... Matsuev does this piece total justice... Fantastic.

  • We violinists have the same problem with Heifetz and an over exagereted cult. Horowitz is simply different ,not better or less. Interpretations must be different and original. The sound must be distintive and MATSUEV has it, like Argerich,Friere or Tiempo.

  • @MrTheComposer Well Said.

  • Try Yuja Wang.

  • I'll be the first one to admit, he can really play. I ,personally, don't really like his rendition of this piece. I'm not saying I can play it any better, I just think his Tempi are too eratic with a strange contrast between them. Don't get me wrong though, he is no slouch.

  • Great technique, but plays too loudly and erratically in parts that require both speed and control. The only version that I've heard that matches the Horowitz performance is Volodos on his Transcriptions CD.

  • I'll agree he does start at a unsustainable tempo which forces some changes later that don't improve the cohesiveness of the piece, but a "labored Cortot?" Cortot never played anything remotely like this.

There never was and never will be another Horowitz (or Hofmann or Richter or a handful of others whose playing seemed to exist outside the bounds of physics and the human nervous system) so there's no point in "better than" or "not as good as" games. Matsuev is pretty damn impressive here.

  • What demosj said is right. Although note that Matsuev slows right down after about 50 seconds

  • He plays this far too fast. It makes the piece feel anxious. His playing reminds me of labored Cortot.

    John-Niles of California

  • Great!

  • He has probably set a record for this piece!!

  • His technique and feel for this piece puts him in the category of Volodos and Argerich. What nationality is he with a name like that ?

  • he's russian . he 's considered as the new richter. I heard him in moscow playing 3rd concerto of prokofiev. It was one of my 2 favorite concerts I 've ever been.

  • Arcadi Volodos, Horowitz, Martha Argerich, these pianists kicks his ass without any pain.

  • you´re right , his technique is really phenomenal. but horowitz´ understanding of music and playing is just the best on earth. I havnt heared sth more spectacular and astonishing so far!

  • really greater then Horowitz

  • Did an elephant step on your ears?

  • I don't not like him, but saying that he is greater than Horowitz is wrong.

  • I think the elephant stuck its trunk into its ears and started bellowing.

Matsuev isn't bad here. But his sonority and clarity are nowhere near the Horowitzian level. It's not electrifying at all. The only 'record' Matsuev sets is speed, and the performance is lacking in every other aspect. Valery Kuleshov plays this much better, the best after Horowitz himself.

  • phenominal technique. better than horowitz in 1968 in my opinion.

  • shockingly great
