  • Just "one" of the coolest Blues performers ever. Man he can blow that harp! Tight band too.

  • Hi woodsheddin

I know that James loves it when girls dance - have you never heard his Don't Spoil My View? I'm a musician myself and when people dance I feel the energy surge. It's great!

And thanks for the response wonton5000: i've never played through a Mesa Boogie but if that's what Robbie said..! I still miss my reissue Super Reverb I had to sell. Combined with my Vox AC30 (Kid Ramos uses that combination of amps) or Twin reissue, it was fantastic, especially witha Korg 'Leslie' pedal.

  • james one of the best in the biz. Gettin old and had all his shit stolen. Love to see him and the boys on the right coast.

  • Very hot very sweet very classy. Quality ! Wish there was more of this stuff being played in the club scene around the UK. Greetings from the Medway Delta !

  • Fantastic controlled harp playing...not too much, just brilliant little licks.

    Almost vocal responses. Great stuff.

  • Who plays guitar on this vid?

  • Oh my god! I was at work and we borrowed someone's truck and this was in it. this is actually sick! I love him!

  • They're line dancing because none of the men will dance - Hard to sit still to that caliber of soulful music!

  • This is the shit

  • I always laugh my ass off when I see people line dancing to tunes like this. Someone slap those two bitches!!

James Harman was, is and always will be one of the best blues singers, songwriters and all around bad ass to grace the stage. Fucker's got grease on his soul....He's that damn slick!

  • Hi there beachidiot

Thanks for your intriguing message. I am reluctant to call you as I am in England and I may 'phone in the middle of the night, your time!

I have noted your number and I suggest that you remove it now otherwise you might get calls from people you don't want calls from - or maybe from James Harman!

Please let me know which part of the USA you are and I'll try to 'phone accordingly.

    Best wishes

  • cruising wonderfull

  • That drummer is nasty slop cool dynamite.

  • Unbelievably COOL F'n song! Blues or no blues.

But it is most definately balllues. haa

  • love it but clumsy edit at 1:46

  • Thanks for that guitarandharp you seem to know more about him than me, so on that I give way to you.

At least we agree it is good stuff

  • Thanks bshuja5.

Again, with respect, I just wanted to clarify that this stuff can't be called 'Kim's style'. There are quite a few guys who were doing it before him.

I'm a Kim fan, I first saw him back in 1979 and 1980. He was astounding and it's an unforgettable memory!

However, I suggest that you check out James' CDs, also Rod Piazza, another GREAT harpist who was doing it before Kim.

I presume you're familiar with the work of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson #2?

    Regards

  • Absolutely overall unequivocally the best in the business!!!!

  • THANK YOU BABY, love Mr. Icepick!

  • Great stuff just dicovered thin man

Very much in Kim Wilson style

  • Hi bshuja5

With respect, it's not really in Kim Wilson's style...James was doing this stuff for ten years before Kim. It's the blues.

He was born in Alabama, so he's a Southerner and this stuff is in his DNA!

James is influenced by Junior Parker, Sonny Boy Williamson and many more of the great black performers, including soul singers like James Carr. But he is his own man, with his own ideas and songs, and has been for decades.

And you're right, it is great stuff.

    Best wishes

  • I loves me some Icepick James!

  • Joey on bass, he played with the Paladins for awhile. A great musician, no doubt, he plays with soul. JAMES HARMAN SOUNDS SO GOOD ON THIS ONE..... Love it.

  • Harmans tone and phrasing is unbeatable. He KILLS.

  • This a really good video with excellent atmosphere and mood, capturing a high point in James Harman's career. He had a great band and was performing superbly himself.

  • What a real and clean sound!

    I like it!

    Great Harp player!

  • Yup, a class all his own...I say. right up there with the legends. Blues at it's best for sure.

I saw him in Honolulu back in early 90's. At Sand Island R&B club. What a drag for him to be ripped off the way he did. There's no good way to get ripped off, either. But some mother!*&%'s really wiped him out.

Did he ever recoup any of it?

What a tragedy. All that vintage gear!

My heart goes out to him. He is such a cool cat.

  • Harman is THE shit! I had the honor of backing him up on a couple of gigs back in August of '07, and let me tell you, hanging with Icepick is a LOT of fun!

  • Yes, he is a great raconteur. I have had the pleasure of hanging out with him but not the undoubtedly great pleasure of backing him up. Well done Mojogypsy!

Nobody tells a story like James. I wish I was with him now, sharing a bottle or two, an experience or two and listening to The Right Stuff, preferably on 78rpm through a top class hi-fi. He's great, I love his music and I love him!

  • does anyone know what amps the guitarist is driving?

  • It looks a reissue Fender Bassman to me

  • At the time that video was shot, the RI bassman was not around yet so it's probably an original one. Might be a Bandmaster as well, it's hard to tell. Maybe he's plugged into one of the two blonde Twins behind him but it sounds more like a tweed amp to me.

  • Those two blonde amps are James' harp amps, both with one 15" speaker, his preference.

Robbie sounds great through any decent amp. I saw in Nelson, Lancashire, U.K., playing through a hired Mesa Boogie. It was the sweetest sound since my man Peter Green. I told James that and he replied: "Phew...that's a big compliment. Peter Green's...er...(chuckle)...Peter Green!"

  • @guitarandharp Robby says he remembers playing through that piece of crap Mesa Boogie --wontonton

  • BLUEFINGER, the amp is a reissue bassman that has been modded, Robbie had that amp long before this video was shot and Robbie also runs through a stand alone reverb, but it's hard to hear.

  • interesting ... i was told that this was a lineup from the 80s but the bassman RI was first issued in '90. Not that it actually maters but then the video must be newer. It's f&§$ing good music, that's all that counts.

  • looks more like a vibro king to me

  • This was the path the Fab T-Birds were walking with Jimmie and Kim....it's a shame they seperated. Great style of blues you can listen to this all night long.

  • Yes indeed. James is a friend of mine and he's as good as anybody at this thing called The Blues. He tells his story (he's one of the very best songwriters and vocalists) then his harp tells the story. My ex-wife described his harp style as 'sultry' - James enjoyed that.

Today he's not in great shape health-wise or career-wise but he's made his mark and already created a great legacy - and it ain't over yet! Keep on James!

Best wishes to all the people out there who love this stuff like I do.

  • @guitarandharp I've got a great James Harmon story give me a call. I'd love to share it with you. 765-967-4862

  • One of the most artful harp players ever. Superb solos all the time. Thanks for posting.

  • This is sometime around 1995. I met James for the first time in Hawaii with this band. He's one of my heroes for sure.

  • This is the shuffle to end all shuffles. I feel like getting my dancing shoes.

  • Great Video & sound. James is one of the top Blueman if I ever heard one. I talked to him on the phone in August 2007 while he was visiting James Day at Ridley Park, Pa. A man with lots of talent. His stories are refreshing & funny, brings back great times of the 1950's.. Blues at it's best..
