We just had the pleasure of listening to and meeting Derico on November 16th, 2010. He was giving a clinic at Hanford High School in Richland, WA. What an amazing drummer he is...plus a wonderful young man. Tonight he shared that he was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago...through his love of God and music..he is still going strong today. Such an honor to meet you Derico! God Bless You and thanks for sharing your knowledge with our kids.
Yo thats my cuzzin... just think, he started off playing on pots and pans and Quacker oatmeal boxes!!! Love You.. AT THIS PRESENT TIME HE HAS LOANED ME THIS EXACT SAME KIT.. BUT IT IN THE COLOR RED... TO SEE PICS. GO TO FACEBOOK.COM.. SEARCH JOEY DAWKINS TAKE A LOOK... ONE LOVE DWATTS!
my good friend played in victor wooten's bass camp thing... and derico was playing with wooten at the time.. haha they called him the "one footed wonder"... this fool is amazing
he uses a single pedal. he says that there really isnt a need to use a double unless your doing like some speed metal or something. plus, he hates how far over the hi htat is pushed when you have a dobule pedal. his single foot is extremely fast!!!
yeah i totally agree with the pushing of the hi hat, I hate how having a double does that. I DO have a double, but i started putting the other pedal on the outside of my hi hat pedal, and it works well. I actually dont ever really use it unless im doing a metal groove or quads for a fill or something.
vERY SKILLED drummer for sure-his influences are obvious to me: Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Ndugu(funky right foot patterns) and D.Chambers.Of course D. Watson took them up a notch with his own innovative style mixed in.
The next dennis chambers?? Come on dude...this guy is a beast by himself. Why the need to compare him to Dennis? I agree that Dennis is one of the best drummers on the world, but he is not the only one...
yeah give my comment a thumbs up then cause obviously someone disagrees with it....hahaha who gave me a thumbs down. its clearly 50 ways steve gadd in the beginning
Is it just me or do I hear some other Music in the background like a singing group? Anyway I have to add this blessed man to my favorite drummers list. And its mostly the Gospel and Jazz influenced drummers who are the best for my taste
I agree, he does a few cool things, but once he gets a groove going he goes off on another tangent. Kinda breaks up the flow. Maybe if we could hear the music in the background.
Well if you battled with MS since you were 24 you might struggle sometime too. Even with that he's 10 times better than the next guy you know with a humbling personality to compliment it. Rico plays like Rico...he studies everyone and uses the best techniques and incorporates it to his own style.
is it just me or does the very beginning of this vid sort of sound like Steve Gadd's "Crazy Army?" am i alone on this? either way, Derico is nuts, and definitely a drummer from another mother
Rico's "technique" is not that much different than yours or mine it's what he worked on to developed that speed one was to play a groove consisting of 8th's on the HH, 2&4 on snare, then the kick plays 1-12-123-1234-12345-1234-123-12-11then a 1 bar fill then gradually pick up the tempo.
i got that when I use to live in Nashville and hang with Derico
I don't only listen to metal drumming. It was just a random statement. Another thing most metal drummers play things like jazz, funk, latin and other various styles.
meh, a genre doesnt really make the drummer, its what a drummer puts into it, guys like George Kollias, Thomas Haake, Derek Roddy, and Danny Carey are examples of excellent metal drummers and drummers like Gavin Harrison, Jojo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, Tony Royster, and Thomas Lang are all also great, of course none of them are going to be as good as what the other does, thats not necessarily the style they play for a living. But an excellent drummer can play most spectrums of styles
HE IS THE BEAST!!!
