I join the chorus of people here....I am in awe of Maggie Smith's talent and personality. She becomes more beautiful with time. I laughed myself to tears with her"Sydney, I've got a hump" California Suite and was moved to tears by her empathy in "Ladies in Lavender" with wonderful Judi Dench as was glorious Diana Rigg. AND....Maggie gave us a brilliant actor in her son Toby Stephens. How extraordinary is that. A mother and a son...... transcendental actors. Thank you for this posting.

Brilliant! I had the good fortune of seing her perform at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario during the 76-80 season along side William Hutt, Brian Bedford under the direction of the then wonderkind, Robin Phillips. Her comedic talent and sense of timing is incredible. We knew we're in the presence of greatness. What a treat!

The story about Olivier is true, but it was MAGGIE SMITH who went back stage to see him after a performance. That is HER story. Bless her for having the class to not say anything and save him the embarrassment. What a sophisticated woman. He didn't even point out that she spent 5 years at the Stratford Festival and performed in more Shakespeare plays than Judi Dench, even though she says she's not a Shakespearean actress. She OWNS Desdemona, Beatrice from Much Ado.
