  • Just watched this last night. I love Danny Kaye for his humor, as well as his wonderful singing voice. I do love the songs with the tongue twisters too. I have this on my DVR, and the commentary from TCM said it was a box-office flop. Hard to believe, since it features some of the funniest stuff Danny ever did.

  • Actually, I've seen a number of Danny Kaye's other movies, but this is the only one I own, because in my opinion, it's some of his best work.

As old as this film is, it's absolutely hysterical. Guess this proves that you don't need to be trashy or curse your head off to do comedy.

    I knew it all along.

  • I've loved this movie ever since I was a kid! Hardly anyone my age remembers it but I've always remembered the "vessel with the pessel" routine! LOL. Hard to believe this film was a flop when it originally came out but it's so loved today and is a classic. Danny Kaye's comic genius is absolute perfection here! Always makes me smile whenever I catch it on TV.

  • Danny Kaye's funniest routine, in (possibly) his funniest movie!

  • Oh no you've got the wrong one

  • yeah! looks like Katy Perry!

  • The girl in red is a hottie

  • @britishlaw She's the mom in Mary Poppins.

  • The Black Fox is only playing the part of the fool. One of my favorites.

  • always loved this clip, Danny was a master at these lines, people now a days really missed out on a great comic...I am sure that Robin, Billy and many more comics learned from him....God bless him always....I think I had a crush on him when I was young, soooo wonderful...xoxoxo

  • I haven't seen this in about 35 years and my mouth twitched with uncontrollable smiles as soon as the clip started playing :-)

  • I totally agree with Spacecookie. I'm 24 and first saw this movie @ my Gramma's *years* ago. I was like - 9? and to this day I love this movie. Cracks me up every time. The sets and costumes always impress too. Back in the day they didn't have CGI crap (which I love don't get me wrong, but way too many rely too heavily on it anymore, which 90% of the time causes the acting to suck, aka the Star Wars prequels) Whereas this will always be a classic. One of the best old-school comedies. <3 it!

  • @Megalith79 Agreed. I am only 17, and I have been watching this since I was a baby... I love Danny Kaye :D

  • Im 15 years old my mum showed me this movie the other day i am in love with it and i have watched it 3 days straight XD

  • One of my all time favorite movies

  • I'm portuguese and 32 years old... Got to knew this clip from a NCIS episode rerruning here in Portugal, where DiNozzo tells Ziva and McGee about this «pellet with the poison»... Very good. Is nice to learn something from today's shows. There has to be a great movie fan writing DiNozzo's parts... Nice one NCIS!!! And this was very nice to know and watch... Perhaps in the future I'll see the full movie!

  • I also love this movie and of course Danny Kaye

  • The Black Fox!

  • The Pellet With The Poison Is In The- ugh! it's too hard to remember!

  • now i finally know where that quote is from =) i should watch that movie again - and omg, it's angela lansbury!

  • VERY GOOD!!!

  • This video is even more hilarious if you turn on the transcribe audio captions! XD

  • I love this movie, one of my favorites of his

  • 19 people obviouly do not have a clue about good comedy. What a classic scene from a brilliant movie with the great Danny Kaye.

  • LOVE THIS CRACKS ME UP EVERY TIME! Thank You

  • BEST. SCENE. EVER.

  • this movie is awesome!!!!! and as spacecookiecadet said...no one my age knows this movie...the first time I saw it my stomach hurt of so much laughter...

  • The tongue-twister routine is a repeat from an earlier comedy with Bob Hope, "Never Say Die" from 1939.

  • This clip shows you that some things are always funny.

  • Thumbs up if you googled this because of a MST3k riff ^_^.

Nevermind the snappy dialogue, I'm fascinated by the "magnet" effect on the armor. Wonder how they did it ^_^.

  • 19 people took the pellet with the poison.

  • Danny Kaye was a genius (Dancer, Master Chef, 747 Pilot etc etc - makes the usual Hollywood "stars" look rather dumb . . .

  • I know the whole routine have since I was little!

  • Yep. A great scene from a great film.

  • Tony DiNozzo brought me here :)

  • LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! i swear whenever i talk about this movie, no one my age knows what I'm talking about....a shame how the classics disappear to the lame movies these days...

  • @spacecookiecadet totally agree :) most teens now wouldn't know a good movie if it bit them on the ^%$&^$...

personally I've only liked about half a dozen films over the past 20 years or so only...most of my faves are pre-1980, and definitely 40's to 60's. This film is so funny and original and brilliant. Today it's all about bla bla 4, and doo doo 5, and sequel this and that, and (bad) re-make this or that....no ideas, lame trash. GO DANNY!

  • @dessert57 I agree... i've like more than that... but thats cuz im a hopeless romantic, havent been alive 20 years :P I have so may black and white favourites that no one knows about. I also love rat pack films and i watch a lot of tv shows where actors that are like 40 something now, or even older, were still young and ni their 20's at least.... like i love the a - team, and george peppard died soon afterwards, but no one even knows who im tlking bout when i say his name

  • @spacecookiecadet you know it. I made a referance to this movie at school and __no_one__ understood me.

  • @BaldursGate2Jonaleth i try and explain to them just how funny and how much they would like it, but no ones interested... only in harry potter, and vampire stuff... so lame..

  • @spacecookiecadet ..I love HP...but nothing today can beat the older film and tv stuff. Danny Kaye was wonderful and the Court Jester is one of my favs. Also Hans Christian Anderson is very good. When I first saw TCJ, I didn't know what to expect. I laughed all the way through it. I even introduced it to my 19 year old niece at the time, and she liked it too.... I tried getting folks at work to watch clip of Pellet with Poison on YT but they weren't interested and acted as it were stupid.

  • @spacecookiecadet I know exactly what you mean!! It's so frustrating.

  • @guiltytrashtvwatcher Its ridiculous.. I used to watch tv shows for entertainment and i only watch three shows on tv because its all vampires, werewolves, stupid reality shows, or really bad cartoons... when i watch tv - i only watch Torchwood (aliens, but not like other space channel shows),Doctor Who, NCIS and CSI... sometimes I watch the food channel.. but I like to cook... otherwise, the tv shows i like to watch, I own on dvd - like the A-team (the 80's series), MASH, Dick Van Dyke show etc

  • @spacecookiecadet I know exactly what you mean. People our age don't know what good movies are!

  • @WazziBerry exactly.. there is no originality in the movies like there was in these movies.. i mean their doing a remake of Footloose, a remake of Fame, a remake of wall street, the three musketeers, fright night... etc. if they arent doing a remake, they are following the same formula of another popular movie... come up with something new please!

  • @spacecookiecadet That's exactly how I feel! They know they can't come up with anything new that's any good, so they ruin old classics and make them all modern-afied uglyeweffness. xP

  • @WazziBerry I know! It's just so annoying these days :D I got upset this morning because I saw the trailor for 21 Jumpstreet - that show was one of the BEST shows ever... And they are making fun of it >=(

  • @spacecookiecadet I know the feeling, from this and several movies. I was, luckily, educated about this movie by my neighbors, who have wonderful taste. :) My friends still haven't seen the movie, but I showed them this clip from Youtube.

  • @Maidenstear I grew up on Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, The Rat Pack.. all the classic actors and singers, and I'm only 17... Today in fact, I went to the movie theatre to see the classic Christmas movie on the big screen - White Christmas, of course, starring Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby, and Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen.. if you've never seen it, you must!

  • @spacecookiecadet Never seen White Christmas? Perish the thought! I watch it at Christmas every year with my family. I only envy you for getting the opportunity to see it on the big screen. :)

  • @Maidenstear me too!!! that movie, and Christmas Carol with Allistar Sim are the 2 movies we watch every Christmas Eve with my family! My favourite Christmas movies of all time are: It's A Wonderful Life", "Holiday Inn" (please tell me you've seen this too - sort of a prequel to White Christmas - where the song first came from I believe - stars Fred Astaire and Bing :P ) and then, of course, White Christmas :D It was awesome on the big screen :D

  • @spacecookiecadet Well, I've never seen Holiday Inn, but I plan to. But I have seen It's a Wonderful Life, and Miracle on 34th Street (the old one). I also watch A Christmas Story. Now THAT'S a classic. XD

Right now, I'm trying to get my friends to watch the Magnificent Seven. I know it isn't a Christmas movie, but it's still fantastic! And I also want them to see "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." :D

  • i always used to say "sir griswald of microwave"

bahahahaha i love when the metal sticks to him. so funny

"The pellet with the poisley is in the pasley with the chasel...ehh just remember that". best line.

  • Danny Kaye was amazing. This is one of my favourite clips of his work.

  • For those of you who love Danny Kaye movies, I suggest you watch Inspector General, it's one of his best in my opinion

  • LOVED this movie when I was a kid. The reference in Chuck was awesome!

  • Proof that there are indeed a lot of really stupid people in this world: The fact that nobody actually went to see this when it came out, the fact that Bush got elected twice, and the fact that some people actually clicked "dislike" on this video.

  • Danny Kaye and David Wenham look so similar!!!! Are they related in some way? I could understand if they where.

  • Whenever people recognized Danny Kaye in public, they would go up and recite this scene to him.

  • Ah, those times when movies were actually brilliant piece of art

  • @EmmaJaneMurdock Chuck is a TV show on NBC that's kind of like a mix of 'Get Smart', 'Office Space' and 'Alias'. The writers of the show love throwing in movie/pop culture references all the time and it's basically a fun show that doesn't take itself too seriously.

It won't let me add the link to the specific scene but just search youtube for:

Chuck vs The Balcony - The peppery Pinot with a stable on the label and a stork on the cork

  • @deedee8409 Ah, thanks so much! That was awesome. I love seeing references to the classic comedy greats. :)

  • I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid. Always loved Danny Kaye.

  • I love the subtle parody of Hamlet.

  • Dude...The writers confused themselves LOL!

Think about it, if the pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pessel and the challace with the pallace has the brew that is true, and they break the challace and she puts the poison in the flagon with the dragon then it doesnt matter because that means BOTH of them are poisoned...

Dude..I have seen this too many times if I can make sense of this LOL! Still adore this scene though xDDDDD

  • @MabiGal93 Haha! I thought that when I first saw this! This scene is still legendary though. :-)

  • Ha! Ha! Ha!...Hooo!....O God dam!.....I forgot just how funny this was!......I'm after bustin' my pants wide open!........thanks for cheering an ol man up!

  • This scene makes me hysterical every time I see it! Deffinately a classic!!

  • :P i would take the axe

  • ...'' well then u fight him ! '' ... rotfl , this movie , unfortunately is so underrated , this scene is epic , always makes me lough , 18 ppl doesent deserve to watch this masterpiece

  • ...'' well then u fight him ! '' ... rotfl , this movie , unfortunately is so underrated , this scene is epic , always makes me lough

  • They don't comedies like this anymore. Everything's poop jokes : /

  • God this may be the funniestt hing I have ever seen

  • I wonder how they did the magnetism tricks. They're very impressive.

  • Yep, great shout out on Chuck.

  • Lol loved the shout out on Chuck. The stable on the label and the stork on the cork!

  • @deedee8409 Somebody made reference to this movie? Where can I find that? I didn't think anybody watched these movies anymore!

  • ......and who's on first LOL

  • Comment removed

  • I've never seen anybody who could wear full plate armor and still look skinny like Danny Kay can!

  • 18 people didnt drink the brew which is true

  • The best scene of this movie, glad to find it here.

Danny Kaye is great, thanks for uploading!

  • The CHAZZLE?!?!?!?!?!

  • Still classic. I love this movie each time I see it.

  • One of the funniest movie scenes ever! Thanks for posting it.

  • What do u think happens after we die?

  • The "fair Princess Gwendolyn" is a very young Angela Lansbury ;-)

  • OMG! I have this on DVD! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

  • I agree with @steelbe with you. Magnificent movie. Very underrated by many, but not true aficionados. Terrific word play, sword fighting (poor Basil), and of course comedy. On par with Princess bride (earlier generation).

  • Whats up with the 18 dislikes?

  • The pellet with the poisin's in the vessel with the pestle,

the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.

BUt there's been a change, they broke the chalice from the palice, and now the poisin is in the flagon with the dragon

The pellet with the poisin's in the flagon with the dragon,

the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!

  • Nicely remebered, but it's chalice, not challace.

  • I have been searching everywhere for this scene It's one of my favorite movies lol

  • There are just so many gags going on in this scene its hilarious!

  • My whole family loves this movie. We have it VHS and DVD.

  • first bit is right... but they broke the challace with the palace 3:37 ...replaced it with a flagon with a figure of a dragon. so the pellet with the poison cant be in the challace with the palace. : )

  • @YamahaBassWave the peelet with the poison's in the flaggon with the draggon not the chalice with the palace? so it's right

  • @xPeanutbutterxJellyx ok maybe, im really confused now...

  • Danny Kaye at his best!

  • Una delle scene più esilaranti della storia del Cinema.

Pensate che personalmente lo vista e ascoltata solo in Italiano (il doppiaggio perde in naturalezza, anche se il doppiatore, Stefano Sibaldi, fa i miracoli.)

  • Mildred Natwick is such a riot!

  • Who punches a shield? Honestly!

  • Does this bus go to potato salad?

  • @DesertphileVEVO "But I don't want to go to Brooklyn...." "None of us, want to Bub, but we all gotta go sooner or later..." "Do you live in Brooklyn?" "No", "Then why are you going to Brooklyn?" "Oh, I'm not.." "Well, the bus is..." "No, it's going to Schmidt's Delicatessen..." " It is?...what for? " "Potato Salad..." Yeah, Wonderman rocks too, Desert!

  • this....movie....ROCKS

  • this has always been on my favorite bits, from a rogers and hart musical orginally i believe.

  • 8:24 Danny Kaye thinking: well, that's a very pleasent thought . . . .

  • "Well then you fight him." LOL

  • brilliant.....!!!!

  • I'm so glad this thing is on DVD and I have it.

  • I doubt there are ten living actors today that could do this scene without cue cards.

Top 3 Comic Geniuses of 1950's:

    1. Danny Kaye

    2. Red Skelton

    3. Jerry Lewis

  • Mairzy dotes and dozey dotes and little lambsy divey...a kiddle dee divey too wouldn't you?

(Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy...a kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?)

  • @rowdymax1

OR...Koochie love...koochie woo...koochie koochie koochie koo? Has anybody seen my gal? lol (Could she love could she woo? Could she could she could she coo? ...etc.)

    gmta darlin' ;~)

  • "There's been a change. They broke the chalice from the palace."

    "They...BROKE..the chalice from the palace?!"

  • get it? Got it? Good!

  • J: The pellet with the poisle is in the flaggle with the chalice...

G: The poison's in the dragon with the pestle...

J: The chazzle's in the poisley with the plellus with the flem-flagus...

G: The pellet with the dragon's in the pestle with the poison...

And then it becomes too damn mangled to follow. Love this movie.

  • for the record: chalice, pestle..... and they used the relative pronoun rather than a non-restrictive modifier.... but just for the record.....

  • BUT WHO'S ON FIRST!

  • Danny was a true acting genius. 100% my hero as a young boy in the 1960s

  • Anyone spot a young Angela Lansbury (Murder She Wrote) as the young princess??

  • Ravenherst is Sherlock Holmes!

    LOL!

  • But that never made sense to me, even as a kid. If the chalice from the palace broke, then the vessel with the pestle would still have the pellet with the poison in it. The flagon with the dragon would have the brew that is true.

Unless, of course, when one broke, they emptied and refilled the vessel with the pestle when they filled the flagon with the dragon.

In which case, never mind. :)

  • @taurnguard i just realized that myself xD

  • @taurnguard Your taking this way to serious.

  • go to dagsrule dot com for the transcript

  • a youtube (for fun) re-enactement of this would carry some serious clout

  • I haven't thought about Glynis Johns in years. She had the most distinctive voice.

  • OMG...I'm crying here. I LOVED Danny Kaye movies.

  • Technicolor is so gorgeous and Danny Kaye is a genius!

  • @abay2005, "Technicolor is so gorgeous."

It sure was. In fact, pretty much ALL film looks from the different eras were beautiful in their own way. I have no idea why humankind lost its mind over the last several years and decided that the dead, flat, sterile images of digital (so-called "HD") photography are somehow superior to the effortlessly transporting, weighty, soulful, otherworldly medium we had for a century. (A medium, I might add, that is actually more detailed than digital "HD.")

  • Good Stock! Good Battle, Good Bye. so funny

  • I Love Danny Kaye! The vessel with the pessel is one of the funniest movie scenes ever!!!

  • Imagine how this scene would have been ruined with a Laugh Bot.

  • "Take that horse and put it back under that idiot" XD God I love this movie!

  • "Well then you fight him".. lol!!

  • hahaha this was so funny! the actors must have had a really hard time keeping their faces and lines straight while filming. thanks for sharing this!

  • lol, im the jester in a stage version of this :) funn

  • Love Danny Kaye, this is my favorite movie. He was such a humanitarian.

  • When having to choose a weapon... "I'll take one of those, one of those. OH, AND A COUPLE OF THOSE!"

    :D

One of the funniest movies ever made.

  • good fun. Thanks for posting. Pls upload the entire film if possible. Most obliged.

  • The first time I watched this movie, I was literally rolling on the floor laughing while they were both reciting the rhyme and the magnetic armor. Funny clip!

  • I believe it's the flagon with the dragon, not the dragon with the flagon, Mrs. Radcliffe.

  • The chalice with the poison has the pellet from the palace.

  • Poor actors having to remember all that. :)

  • thank you for posting one of my favorite film clips!

  • HAHAHA!!

  • the chessel with the pessel is the veesel with the poison and the brew that is trew is the cooks stew

  • Not only was Danny Kaye an icon...this gig is such a total classic!

  • I saw this as a kid in the late fifties - thought it was the funniest thing i ever saw - it still is!

Mel Brooks said this was a movie that influenced him greatly - it's easy to see why

  • so so funny. I stayed home sick from school when I was 7. My gramma took care of me. I have fond memories of campbells chicken noodle soup..a blue blanket and this movie. Good Times. Sigh.

  • @MrTracythomas1 Don't eat the soup if it's in the flagon with the dragon.

  • The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pessel, the challace with the palace has the brew which is true!

    Then it changes...

The pellet with the poison's in the challace with the palace, the dragon with the flagon has the brew which is true!

    I said it!

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 Well then you fight him!

  • @sirstrongbad lol he typed it not said it

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 no it changed to the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pessel has the brew that is true.

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 they broke the chalace from the palace. it was "the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pessel has the brew that is true."

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1

the second part is wrong....the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pessel has the brew that is true

  • @YamahaBassWave i swear it's right.

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 Actually the pellet /w the poison was in the flagon w/ the dragon, the vessel w/ the pestle had the brew that is true!

  • Comment removed

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 not the dragon with the flagon, the flagon with the dragon. :P

  • Classic! I love this movie, and Danny Kaye

  • One of my favorite scenes from my absolute favorite movie. :D <3
