I've got a brew house kit on the go right now, I was confused when the directions said I needed a 10gal fermentor when it only makes 23L. I guess its to make room for the vigorous fermenting, it came right up through my airlock etc, so I had to pop the lid and let it finish over night.
Because the brew would be sitting so long on that yeast, it may alter the taste negatively. As well, the primary is used only during the highest output of activity, this way the co2 being produced will keep out air contamination... in the carbouy (secondary), it has the bung and airliock, and is far more secure and safe. You can keep it in secondaries for a long time, even racking over to another every few months...
You poured unboiled, unsterilized tap water into your sterile fermenter? The extra yeast you managed to get out of that cup wasn't really worth the risk.
You don't have to boil in most cases. I often add part grains, or use a powder malt additive - so I like to boil all together. But boiling is not really needed for the higher end modern kits out these days.
Those temps are ok. As long as the yeats is warm enough to work its magic.
There are tricks to temperature and specialty yeats, but a basic kit is good at 17 to 22 C.

What would be the difference if you left it in the primary fermenter for 4 weeks at the right temperature and bottled from there?

Never been a problem in my brewing.
The water here is very nice...
Kit brewing is still kit brewing, not difficult by any means.
With a partial grain or an all grain - definately more steps are in place...
This one worked out great.

i'm glad to see someone else chills the wort the exact same way I do...it works great for me...great way to put off spending $70+ on a wort chiller.
