As much as I appreciate Vesta's original, Lalah's version just does it for me. Especially the ending harmony, but I also like Vesta's closing scatting just as much in her version.
back at a time when living in New York meant being exposed to all forms of music, I first heard this record. don't know how it is up there now, but it sure is refreshing to hear this gem again.
This song is beautiful however makes me sad because back in 1991 my high school crush and eventually boyfriend was shot and killed over a necklace some guys thought he took from one of them and I owned the cd this song was on so I forever played it after his funeral. It was as if he were telling me he was coming back to me.
someone used it on a video tribute to florence griffith joyner fastest woman athlete ever RIP . thats where i first heard this, i downloaded it after that.
Lalah should be so proud! Her voice is like the finest silk that has ever graced your skin. When you think you have felt the finest nature has to offer, she ups it one more time. God Bless you Lalah! May you have peace, health and a abundance of love!
*Smiling* Thanks, Sean Barnave, for introducing me to this song. One of my fondest memories at Spelman College in '92 was singing this song with Kai Martin, Noelle Laveaux, Jeanine Addison, and Heather Fatzinger. LOVE ya, ladies-Mwah! Thanks for nurturing my nostalgic side :-)
Gosh, I realized I spelled her name incorrectly. Please excuse the typo. I am such a Lalah fan. Lalah's voice is like watching water falling over the most beautiful waterfall in the world. The water goes into a lake, pond, stream or ocean....regardless, it is recycled into the earth and made beauttiful. Lalah your voice......keeps streaming!
This song will live on long after she is gone. Why? The woman is talented like her father and the genes just spread on. We all are blessed to hear her voice, intermingled with her father's. Love endures, it manifest, and it blossoms. Here is love blossomming.....Laylah Hathaway! PEACE, LOVE and FLIGHT!
I just heard Vesta's version ........(and I remember when Lalah came ou twith this early 90's)..............and to me it's too fast....you don't comprehend the words like my girl Lalah.....Lalah puts it down...way down

I MUST SAY THIS PARTICULAR SONG HAS 'JESUS' WRITTEN ALL OVER IT...NOW THERE'S ONLY ONE THING LEFT TO DO...AND THAT'S TO FIND MY WAY BACK TO YOU.......!!!!!!!
I remember laying in my bed listening to this so many times...Lalah's music is so relaxing and complete mind music......I love it so much!!...Keep singing Lalah...I love you!!
Her best song... brings back so many good memories... this would be the last song I'd listen to before going to bed. so soulful... the 70's, 80's, 90's were the best of music.
@sgrantla: Same here: This "I'm Coming Back" was one my favorite songs from Lalah Hathaway's first album. I used to listen to it before bedtime when I was in high school, my "Quiet Storm" music.. I thought she had the greatest voice--and, at the time, I didn't have any idea who Donny Hathaway was. I was right!
@iboudiop This was in heavy rotation during my local radio station's four hour Quiet Storm block. I would listen to this and other great music as I drifted off to sleep as a teenager. Those were good times. Where has soulful, romantic music gone?
when i hear this song i cry its so emotional music like this is so beautiful . man i wish music today was like this all my friends say im stupid cause i love old music idc its soo much better then todays so i can sit down all day in listen to it im a old soul and glad cause i have a ear for music. that other people mite not have . i love lalah hathaway music !!
@TWhiz01 You too? lol. I was 12 or so and I was thinking how wonderful loving as an adult was going to be. I was hoping that it would be like this. Now I'm 34 and I'm listening to this while mending a broken heart. Anyway it's still great music!
Even before my next comment I love this song. I feel it's one of the best ever written. One night when i was doing college radio, a female called me to request this song. She told me she needed to hear the song to help her child get through a tough fight with a illness so I played the song. It turns out her daughter had already died 10 year prior to our conversation and that she was still in grief. I felt so bad becasue music can fill a void if we only listen to the message behind the song.
Co-sign @doubleolove ~ '90 was a good, musical year! LOL I imagine a great (grand)parent, friend or even gracious God experience this sentiment for all of us from birth, when "the subtleness of you & me" was all we knew. Find your way back... in p(e)ace!
I have always loved this song since hearing it in 1990. I never tire of listening to it. This entire CD from Donny's Daughter- her first- is amazing. Yes, I know Vesta Williams did it 4 years earlier but Lalah's rendition will always be my favorite! Thanks for posting so I can enjoy it! :)
I remember when I was at Boston University, and Lalah was at the conservatory also in Boston, how close I felt to her in that we were both from Chicago, and in a strange place; a year later, she brought out this music, and I could hear her father singing though her.
One of my favorites, early 90's I think. Not so long ago but it's a song I'll always like and remember the times back then. Used to listen to this all night long.
I was in love with this song when I first heard it while stationed in Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Storm. What a silky smooth voice she has. I love this song.!!!!!
@lisastokes1000 I too was stationed at fleet hospital 15 in Saudi Arabia when I first heard Lalah Hathaway's version of this song. It's so much smoother than Vesta William's version....
love this song. i thought my mom was depressed when she played this when i was a child. now im 30 and im playing it like she did with candles lit and a glass of wine. she was just in her mood.
@igot3ba Your mom sounds like me- the moody type (but there's nothing inherently wrong with that). I used to listen to this along with Alexander Oneal's "Sentimental."
@TheMrProtocol YOu are SO SO right..I've ALWAYS said that...Isn't that just amazing how they share pretty much similar vocal tones? Blows me away..she really is daddy's legacy and doing a WONDERFUL JOB..Go Lalah..
DTM I want to let you know that I'm coming back! Everything is different! One of my favorite songs by Lalah! "I'm gonna be by your side day and night, thru the rest of my life, so open up your heart for me, I'm coming back for you"! I'm coming back just to give you my love DTM! :-)
Iv'e always loved this song. heartpounding when in love. Thanks Lalah, I finally found you here. Couldn't spell 1st name right and lost this CD! God Bless! Tc eckstine!
Wow...i bought this Tape just before i enlisted in the air force...i had it hidden(with my walkman) in the ceiling panels of the day-room in San Antonio AFB ....memories of my ex-fiancee, lol...
I listened to this song every night on my local radio station's Quiet Storm growing up. Great memories. I feel sorry for young people today. They don't have beautiful love songs like this to listen to. They just have "artists" like T-Pain and Lil Wayne promoting over-the-top sexuality. Let's hope real music like this comes back, no pun intended.
For the ones that didnt know Lalah Hathway She is a beautiful person and has a wonderful voice just get the albums and believe me you wont be disappointed
she is the desendant of the late ,great donny hathaway, she has his singing spirit,he will live forever thru his daughter.that's the gospel truth.....HOLLA ,IF YA HEAR ME!!!!!
....."Reach out and call me....I'm gonna be by your side..day and night.....thru the rest of my life"......So open up your heart for me..I'm comin back for you...."
That's funny, because I did the same thing! I also had to find Lalah her songs after I saw that tribute video. It was a tribute video of Florence Griffith-Joyner. Do you also have the "I Gotta Move On" song?
@Brownpride88 Stiilll one of my all time favorite songs. If I listen to it more than two
times back to back I'm in serious danger of crying-.. And that's not on no sucker shit- i just reminds me of the good ol days. Plus, I was in Desert Storm when this came out- so it takes me back to a time and place when life was much more promising
@gump489 love this song. i thought my mom was depressed when she played this when i was a child. now im 30 and im playing it like she did with candles lit and a glass of wine. she was just in her mood.
Really? Was that the project that came out in '87 with "Once Bitten, Twice Shy"? I have the CD here in my hands and it saids "L.Hathaway" as the writter of this jammie! Holla at ya boy!
Shenatta, if you ever get a chance. Please go see her LIVE! This recording doesn't come close to doing her talent justice. Lalah is AWESOME! Take care!
A very unique voice. You can hear her father in her voice

That's funny, because I did the same thing! I also had to find Lalah her songs after I saw that tribute video. It was a tribute video of Florence Griffith-Joyner. Do you also have the "I Gotta Move On" song?

'I Gotta Move On' is, in my opinion, the best song on that CD.

Wow, I was looking at track vids during the Olympics last year and came across that vid of Flo Jo and I had to find out who was singing that song.

Shenatta, if you ever get a chance. Please go see her LIVE! This recording doesn't come close to doing her talent justice. Lalah is AWESOME! Take care!

I remember waiting by the radio to hear this song again so I can record it over a blank tape.
