  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • that was good especially for those who are deaf however what is the difference between BSL and ASL i know that they are different countries i.e BSL is British Sign language and ASL American Sign Language

  • What is the difference between French and English?

    Same deal.

  • Hey dont feel bad, I have yet to see any of us be able to sign that song with the full emotion that Bette conveys when she sings that. I can only think of one person who may be able to pull that off and so far I havent seen any videos by him interpreting music.

You did a very good job of signing the song in ASL. I do think it loses some of its punch when done in ASL.

But then again, that could be because when I sign it, I do it as the song is sung. In English and not ASL.

  • I'd say that the guy who responded to me did it very well (talk about being outclassed :-P), as did the BSL guy. Ah well.

I'd suggest you take a look at those before saying it necessarily loses punch in ASL. :-) (I would say that signing it in SEE, however, would be a butchery.)

  • @bear44857 ASL Would make a picture....each word... isn't necessary. Make the poetry- make the picture.

  • A couple of things I would like to comment on. One the video was very jerky. Im not sur eif this is a problem the cam or a problem with editing.

Another is when signing that song, your not really conveying the emotional power that song has over the listener. That song is a very powerful song and also a very beautiful one.

I am a latened deaf and used to really love *The Rose*. Bette Midler really outdid herself when she sang that.

  • Jerkiness is a problem of my system being really slow. Videos since then have been better - e.g. see my 'terp of Origin of Love.

As for emotion - my affect tends to be towards the flat side. :/

  • When i saw yours, some of the words i studied came back to me--but not when i saw ben's.

  • Saw your ASL version of The Rose and decided to give my interpretation... GREAT job! I responded with the video, so check it out. Would love to see different ASL versions...

  • I really like yours. Much more visual/fluent than me. ^^

  • Don't see your video response though; I don't think it took. Set it again and I'll approve.

  • Well done! AS a third year ITP, I really enjoyed this!

  • ITP = interpreter?

  • This is very true...I just see so many kids who live in squallor and in violence...that's why I make sure my classroom is always bright, clean, and safe...

I also play a lot of music and make sure we laugh a lot...

  • language arts...I teach sixth graders, many of whom have no beauty in their lives, have trouble writing etc., but who have beautiful souls and express themselves in other ways...

  • IME it is not that anyone lacks beauty in their lives, but that it is difficult for most people to recognize. ;-)

    Glad it helps though.

  • lovely. i'm a teacher, and it has inspired me...

  • Teacher of what?

  • love it! thanks!

  • yes, hard to watch because it takes a long time to upload and it skips a little

  • That's probably an issue with your computer / internet connection... YT formats things to all be the same size.

  • this is so hard to watch...yet i cant look away...good job!

  • Hard to watch?

  • Very nice, great job. It would be really nice to also see this with the original, with Bette Midler singing.

  • Thanks :)

I'm not aware of any vids of her singing, but the video that this responds to has it in BSL w/ the Bette Midler audio. I deliberately chose a version without vocals so it wouldn't trip me/viewers up as much on imitating English grammar.
