@91n93y - I bet a lot of the songs you like have samples... Rock, Alt, Techno, Country, etc.... Every kind of artist has sampled. Hell, Sweet Home Alabama was taken from an old blues song from around the 30's.
Second thing is there were 1 or 2 samples missing that I remember Lupe did that weren't in the video the first is "Rock Creek Park" by The Blackbyrds & I'm not sure what the other is but they're both used in "Outty 5000"
Those who hate sampling in hip-hop should learn some history beause the first official rap song known as "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang was actually sampled sampled from a disco song called "Good Times" by Chic. It is becauseof the popularity of that sampled song that hip-hop broke out from House, Park, & Block Parties in New York to a worldwide fenomenon. So technically Hip-hop was founded by sampling other music.
Why do people hate on sampling so much? It requires some skill and creativity to find a abd successfully use a sample the same tempo of the track that fits with the vocals. Better than having a song that ODs the snares, has an auto-tuned hook, and the rapper brags about how "real" he is and how much women/weed/money/people on his dick he has.
@MrRobinsonTv exactly....sampling is absolutely fine if you know how to do it the right way...it takes a certain skill set just to take something and make it yours to the point where sometimes most people dont know its sampled...sampling is one of the cornerstones of hip hop...only artists can sample...because they have an ear that tells them "oh it coulda sounded like this ".... sampling is the audible equivilant to a collage...point blank...
@Sidthaakid About 25% of the music i own is music i found through other bands sampling and covering songs. Lots of bands in the industry take it as a compliment if their stuff gets sampled.
Not ALL of hip hop is sampled. there are many rappers out there who dont always use samples. Even some of Kanyes songs arent sampled. But, it does seem like all of the good hip hop songs have sampled beats to them.
regardless of how the track was made, they are hot tracks that make the listener listen to the original thus exposing the listeners to an entire new artist and appreciate more music. It's what music is really about
It's one thing to sample a small portion or a few seconds or even a sound from another song. But that Modest Mouse "sample" is the whole hook! That's talentless BS, just like Flo-Rida's song where "Blue badabee" and the other song with "Right Round" are 100% uncreative using the same melody but just changing some of the words. It's not helping expand Rap Music, and it's hurting hip-hop culture if you ask me. People will think all rappers have no talent.
@yemenohman but you don't think he had any input in that song? It's his third album isn't it? By then you'd think it's his name and face on that track. Yes, I know, "rap is what we do, hip hop is what we live". I'm just saying that songs like that aren't helping the image of rappers. Most people don't even care who produces a song. Most people don't say "oh that's the new Rick Rubin track!"
@dozer11 I agree. Being a producer myself, sampling is a monster that has grown way out of hand. It went from being a three word cut that was used creatively, to a lazy excuse to put a new beat behind an old song, or even the same beat, have someone rap over it and call it a new song. Its more or less just a cover of that song with the original artist getting no credit. But I still think its important to separate the rapper from the producer, even if theyre the same person sometimes.
@91n93y so what ur saying is everybody in hip hop is shit... because im pretty sure almost every producer out there has sampled. without sampling hiphop wouldnt have the same history
its cool to sample. every rapper does it. but i think the difference between kanye and everyone else. is kanye has to RAP over his samples about how legit he is. about how hes the best in the game. he samples and exudes the cockiness without giving credit where credit is due. other rappers sample.. but to me, they have their own way of paying tribute - even if its being a little less humble.
@johncp1989 kanye is a genius.. ur mad because u cant do what he does as good as he does. jus because he spoke his mind about some chick doesnt mean anythings wrong with kanye.. he simply expressed his right to freedom of speech. an the comment "gayfish" is so gay/immature... grow up an enjoy the music. let them handle there situation an u enjoy what he does best which is make great music.
@chefkahana lol I could personally tell you which ones I know at least 75% at the least of his music and I could tell you just from hearing the samples..
@lilross2k6 More than half of 808's and Heartbreak is made without samples... it is probably his worst album but still some solid tracks were created from scratch. Also, sampling and turning old tunes into something new is super creative.
