"Unions are not the answer." There is no THE answer. Unions are responses to situations, using collective power to counterbalance corporate power. Without any power whatsoever, corporate management can do what it wants, which depends on the benevolence of the corporate hierarchy. I recently retired from one of these corporations, which used to be relatively benevolent, until it got bought by a well-known megacorporation. They gradually increased what I call gratuitous stress, harassment, threats
@truegangsteroflove For the record Im all for private sector unions, Owner of a company and representatives of the private sector workers deciding how to split up the pot of revenue they create is good stuff, however public unions create zero revenue and want the world=MPS teachers pulling 100k salary/benefits a year yet nearly half the graduates cant read?????
thanks for posting. maybe you did not realize, that the unions here in WI ceded all of Gov. Walkers budgetary demands, willingly taking pay cuts and benefit cuts, to no avail. Walker is not interested in balancing the budget, and uses false niceties to redirect our attention as he guts the schools, privatizes state utilities and advances the wealth of his private donors. there are many, including myself, who are not union, who oppose Walker and what he is doing to this state.
@centerflank "In a press conference Monday, Walker acknowledged that union leaders have agreed to increase public employee contributions for pension benefits to 5 percent and health care to 12 percent. However, he insisted they must also give up collective bargaining rights..."
@risingsolari Fact is union bosses "SAID" they would take the paycut, but they didnt have to....what would have stopped them from giving the state gov the middle finger once contract talks came around? As multiple unions around the state tried to rush in contracts before the collect barg law ending it took affect clearly tells their side....most of the rush contracts didnt meet Walkers requirements for pension/health contribution!
@centerflank I know a little about this issue. I worked at a post office once, and was approached early on about joining the union. I wouldn't have been asked if they didn't have a union. Union or not, the post office I use is experiencing low worker morale due to poor management and mistreatment.
People organize unions for a reason. It usually has to do with a number of factors - pay, hours, favoritism, harassment, rights on the job, such as the right to file a grievance, and safety. You lie.
@truegangsteroflove Post office is not federal, its private.....Just the federal gov likes to dip its fingers in the business and mess everything up because the post office needed that bailout years ago....
@centerflank It's more like quasi-private, government overseen and funded. When I worked there it was public. I used to work the projection booth at the business school auditorium classroom where I used to go to school. A management professor used the postal service as his classic case of bad management. They made injured workers sit in a glass booth all day rather than convalesce at home. The result was no one would do anything that had a remote chance of injury - productivity went way down.
@truegangsteroflove It is rather sad regardless, federal mandates just muck everything up and unions are not the answer. Big gov needs a MASSIVE downsizing otherwise this country is doomed.......
thanks for the kind words librarising777. it is a powerful time in the US and the world right now. we have sen the first waves of protest unleashed this spring, and it returns to us now, with the whole world united with the same voice. we are the 99%!
It was genius to pick this particular song. It really sets this video apart from the rest. It's not a victim's cry of defiance -- it's a wise person's quiet affirmation that the battle is already won. That's what makes it so powerful. It celebrates an *inevitable* future. The understated but persistent drumbeat is the footsteps of those who will keep on coming, and coming, and coming, because democracy is an idea whose time has come, and nothing can hold it back. Brilliant choice.
Great job! I see you did this back in March. Looks like a preview of the Occupy Wall Street movement. but not surprising. Madison's always been a leader.
I don't think the music fits with the footage. You should have chose some actual sound and some music like solidarity forever and this is our land. But from PA i am with you Wisconsin!
Even though this video is 3 months old, I still re-watch it once in awhile. I like the fact that it's a positive affirmation of a bright future, rather than just a complaint about the present. Keep up the good work, because "It's coming . . ."
Since statehood, Hawai'i has long been a pro union stronghold with Democrats holding most of the key political positions. Yet as of late, public worker unions appear to be losing some of their bargaining rights. Who would have thunk it? I take a neutral stance when it comes to collective bargaining but felt an inkling to pose this question: If corporations provided a living wage, affordable medical coverage, and pensions for all their workers, there would be no need for unions now would there?
I'm sure that Walker and his cronies will come to regret their actions come next elections.....unless they try to pass legislation allowing themselves a lifetime position...lol
The unions have been stripped of their bargaining rights and they're not even willing to *consider* a general strike. I'm sorry, but that's hardly inspiring. Your leadership sucks. This is the death of a movement, not the beginning. Youtube videos and picket signs don't change the world.
@bananas1220 i hear you. both parties are puppets to big Corporations, who buy more and more of our gov. every year. vids may not change the world, but they might grab your attention. it up to us, the people, to demand better representation. start with a recall effort. hold the government liable. check out Wisconsinrecall t to get started
This is SO inspiring, and so beautifully edited. I had never heard this song before, but I immediately went to iTunes and bought it. It should be the anthem for this movement. I've been watching Wisconsin from California and attended the solidarity rally in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. Thank you, risingsolari, for documenting this piece of history. I hope it goes viral.
@librarising777 thank you for your solidarity. we in wisconsin are touched and bolstered by the support of others throughout the nation. may peace and the will of the people prevail
@3:35 you zoomed in on a sign I made, carried by my friend Tim. A solidarity fist with heart-shaped balloons. That poster is available for free download @ thethirdbenjamin. com/solidarity.html if anyone else wants to use it!
Thank you for making this video, we are at a historic time in America. I simply cannot believe how the media is avoiding this peaceful uprising. I know why they don't: they don't want it happening. Again, thank you for your contribution to spreading the awareness.
@TheThirdBenjamin1 i really loved that sign. it said so much in an abstract way. great vision. thanks for the link, i will put that out there. i'd love to see more of them this weekend!
Well done! All over the country we see exactly what they are trying to do. The Koch prank call made it all over the net and laid out his real plan. They want it all.
@eekastick thanks, we appreciate the attention we are getting from outside the state. and it's not just our struggle, nasty stuff is going down right now in MI and OH as well, with less coverage. this is a shot across the bow to all states in the Union. fight back, be heard, or we will soon be the Incorporated States of America

Just a reminder, Federal employees have no union and they are not mistreated nor do they cry about everything like these wisconsin public employees.
