It sees its reflection in the garbage can and think it's another bird encroaching on its territory. It's probably protecting a nest area. I see birds do this all the time with car mirrors, hubcaps, and the like. :)
Ok, again I must explain. The bird is trying to avoid a raptor from eating him. I train the crows here which protect the little guys and yes even your pet cats and dogs from being eaten by them. Raptors eat your pets and birds hit windows, reflecting objects, and fly into garages, warehouses, and even your supermarkets (look over your head while shopping)to avoid getting eaten. Crows do not eat living things Raptors such as Hawks and Falcons do!
As a parrot owner, and this being another bird, he thinks it's a toy the shiny surface does make it think it's another bird but also that he can play with it so every time he flies into it he's expecting the bird it's challanging/playing with to back down because of the show of force....or he's bored.
You're welcome. As another add on though, I think god makes animals do stupid things on occassion to amuse us, as you have done. So a secondary thank you to you!
A sparrow did the same thing on my car. It somehow landed on the side of the window (gripping the rubber liner), looked at my rear view mirror, and just started attacking it for ten minutes.
no stupid bird....thats your reflection...
