just to note, as a karateka i love and respect most fighting arts, be it mma, boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, bjj and even ITF taekwondo but not WTF tho...
i would like to firstly say with respect, this in no way demonstrates an average to high level of kumite/sparring in karate. Good effort but i hate seeing ppl like the gentlemen below @Ronin6575 being misled by what karate has to offer. and to say that in mma we need to get out of karate way of striking even though we have a prime example in machida's striking doing extremely well in the sport.
I love how grappling is implemented into the art but I would love to see protective gear just in case of an injury. Overall I am in no position to judge but I thank you for creating an environment for many to learn about themselves and become a better human being.
OK, the punches they threw were not full contact....neither were the kicks. Why wear the gloves if you aren't really contacting the opponent. Then, we add some judo techniques and what do you have? This is not a very good example of MMA guys...you have to get out of your shotokan style striking when you really do full contact. Sorry.
doesnt look like full contact IMO, but I was still quite impressed actually. Not all out full contact sparring but a good show of technique, and seems like a proper Karate club, allowing a wide range of techniques from both striking and grappling, no limitations on contact area and none of that gay point sparring where you get stopped after every strike.
@Ronin6575 You over the hill and you want to fight someone that is 36,in good shape fast and dangerous not to smart on your part and i know alot more styles than just shotokan karate and im pretty shure you can just go to some taekwondo schools and spar with there master full contact have fun with that better you than me.
@TheShinobi32 OK, I didn't mean to the death or anything....I am sure since my background was in Gojuryu, Shotokan, and Jeet Kune Do, that is somewhat diverse.
Add that to a previous background of wrestling and then later, Japanese Jiujutsu, this should suffice....and yest I would go a few rounds with a 36 year old just for kicks! Get it? Kicks?
@Ronin6575 Well if you were still young and you know all that you could have made your own style and combined all of that and the point i was trying to make is in taekwondo the full contact sparring is rougher than shotokan and alot of other styles of karate or kung fu because you get hit alot harder and you can get kicked in the head some people get knocked out in competition the good thing about shotokan and hapkido sparring is you can use grappling witch makes it more real.
@TheShinobi32 There is really no need to create new styles....I have found it more fun to have a base style and then cross train in other systems to better round out skills. Traditionally we have practiced shotokan and then for a portion of each class, we would work on techniques from others.
Calm and nice sparring-demo for the kids, but both could have taken more initiative and I failed to see any real chasing and aggression. Karate is an extremely brutal martial art, so a certain amound of aggression should always be present. Also, especially since it was a demo, I really felt a need to hear a kiai every now and then. But I loved how grappling was incorperated! It's all in Karate and in Kata too, so it's great to show the kids that Karate's not limited to punches, kicks and blocks.
people shouldnt hate on this video its very good sparring exercise so what if they arent throwing every blow as hard as they can they are just doing a demo for their class clearly and im very happy to see jiu jitsu being incorporated into traditional styles it shows the evolution of martial arts and dont be surprised if you see new styles born in the next few years from the traditional coming together with new age....it just keeps evolving
Good video, well rounded techniques. Different styles/schools choose different strategies to train. These guys choose to spar lightly with control, wide range of techniques. Look like they're doing demonstration to children. I don't see any reason for full force. Other Shotokan organizations do point/stop kumite. To me, that sucks. Kyokushin do body trading slams with no control, nothead hits; to me; sucks. Shotokan was the best well rounded art, JKA & WKF who make it sucks nowaday. Good video!
and we never wear gloves!! or any kind of protection!!! and on trainings of traditional karate we kick each other very, very hard!!!! not like this guys so soft!!!!!! OSU!
@ShotokanKarateMD Yes: good sparring, though you should probably not used your Judo so much on the students as they don't seem able to defend it at all and it becomes a crutch after awhile (basically you can clinch whenever you want as a get out of jail free card). I don't know why you labelled this full contact, but you definitely have skills and it looks like a good school.
I'm sorry, how is this full-contact, or even Shotokan for that matter?
Wearing gloves and not making contact seems to not really meet the criteria of 'full-contact', even those throws are pulled.
And Juji Gatame? Okay, Judo and Jujutsu has this, so it isn't to much of a jump, but a Guillotine? Whilst I am aware that Shotokan Ryu has Tuite and Nage Waza, even just in the Kata, this is just pandering to the Jiu Jitsu crowd.
This is damn poor Karate, not that it is Karate. Bleh.
@Hankthejollyspoon that is not fullcontact....free sparing with no point and with all kicks doing very powerfull like in kyokushin is called jiyu kumite!!!!!and even in jiyu kumite you dont wear gloves...in every kind of karate in any style which is traditional you dont have gloves....and this karate on video sucks!!!
just to note, as a karateka i love and respect most fighting arts, be it mma, boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, bjj and even ITF taekwondo but not WTF tho...

Can't seem to edit my comment... Don't mean to imply I know better than anyone else, just something I noticed straight away.

I'm only a white belt and I can see several things that you're both doing wrong...
For one thing, you're only ever moving to the left (clockwise, when you look at it as a circle).

Its lovely to see the grappling in Karate being shown, well done.

@TheShinobi32 Full contact taekwondo isn't that an "Oxymoron" ?

@Ronin6575 Why don't you go full contact with some of the masters in taekwondo and find out.
TheShinobi32 3 weeks ago
@TheShinobi32 It is a little to late for me to do that in that I am over the hill in age now.
What masters would you recommend? I would be happy to do so if the masters are in my age group. How about you? Perhaps we could go a few rounds!
