  • Wow! I hve just listened to - Gonna be strong - breathtaking, and also, Make me a child again I only ever heard it once on the radio - and the words and melody are embedded on my memory - how about that? - just shows how good he was. He could sing the telephone directory, and make a fantastic job of it - Bless u Frank

  • Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil...don't freaking forget the damned writers....those two wrote genius songs. And the fact that this has been covered by so many only proves it.

  • Frankie is one of a kind... Gene Pitney was one of a kind as well.. Bith belong to the ages and their like will never be seen again.

Frankie had so many MANY incomparable CLASSICS like That Lucky Old Sun, I Believe, Lord You Gave Me a Mountain..and on and on. Gene ... The Town Without Pity could be sung by no other than he.

  • Very well said my friend! To each his own. I was just trying to display the talent that Frankie had, not trying to compare between him and Gene. They were two completely different talents, both were fantastic!

  • Let me tell you from a big Frankie Laine fan, I wish he had never recorded this song the way he did. but this is what Columbia was giving him to record and Doris Days son was in charge of the recordings. No wonder Frankie didn't try to hard to stay at Columbia when his contract was up in 1964. Gene is much better on this song.

  • @markalson1938 : I see you posted one year ago. I 'm just now reading it!

I'm not surprised that Terry Melcher produced it. I read another you-tube artist that said Terry gave him some dull recordings. I can't complain-- Terry produced my records at Columbia in 1966, mixed them into great stereo, (somewhat new at the time), and taught us a lot about recording. I worked for him as a studio musician several summers thereafter. Sorry he's gone.

  • @danje10 Terry may have been a great guy and did a lot for a lot of young talent but his arrangments just didn't fit Frankie. Frankie knew Terry since he was a kid and lived close by the Laine's. Lisen to the version of "Don't Make My Baby Blue" from his

AMOS album, it is done more in the Laine style and I think is much better than his

Columbia recording that Terry worked on. I was never a big fan of Gene Pitney's, but his version was a lot better.

  • Wow! I'm first to post? Never had that honor before! This is a great Gene Pitney song. Covered by many, including LuLu, I think, among others. Frankie Lane has a powerful voice, but I don't think he puts any emotion into this one. Only Gene could squeeze every ounce of emotion out of a song like this.

Frankie just sings it. Gene, however, had you believing he was devastated, holding back the tears to get through the song!

(Yeah, I'm a GP fan and friend of his for many years!)

  • AHHH, Gene is top of the line, his vocals always amazed me, I love the guy. It is mega hard to beat sound, no opposing thoughts from me that's for sure! I posted this because this is the side of Frankie that people like myself never heard before. Up until I heard, Don't Make My Baby Blue, I never dreamed Frankie had it in him. That one song made me have a completely different view!

  • Even though I like the Gene Pitney version of this song better and I ADORE the Cyndi Lauper cover best, I think that there is more than just the voice at work with your displeasure. Although, admittedly, he probably could have done more with the song, I think that the arrangement was what made it difficult for it to sound heartfelt. It was too bouncy for a broken hearted song. It was great even so.

  • @danje10 Frankie's version of "I'm Gonna Be Strong" is actually the original, released as a single in 1963 on Columbia records. It just wasn't a hit until Gene recorded it.
