  • just sounds like an MG to me

  • Hello. I used to drive minis and was always told that the only thing worse than tappet noise was no tappet noise. Now drive an MGB and it has plenty of both tappet noise and power.

Sounds like pommy music to me:)

  • That sound is very relaxing indeed.Very nice sound.

  • Back when I was mechanicking, there used to be a tale that MGs ran better with slightly loose tappets..Don't know if its true,we used to set them slightly loose and never had any problems..

  • @GavinS1965 They did. It's because at factory spec, they were too tight. The valves overlapped and on the compression stroke, it would loose compression.

  • '67 is still a solid lifter engine, no? Adjust valve lash and use one grade heavier oil such as 10W40.

  • what rockers without oil coming on the top??

  • @tribalforrealz

yes typical for an MGB not as wet up there as a chevy or ford for sure!

MGB valves are set to .015 cold which makes the tapping noise whereas Chevys are hydraulic, there is no clearance when the valve is closed.

  • You need some oil friend. Any chance you installed a rebuilt rocker set with an offset post? Vic

  • One of your rocker pedestals has an oil hole in it. It has to be in the rear so it will receive oil from the head.

  • a friend of mine had a problem with a valve train rattle on a 1098 midget. turned out the the machined bores that the cam followers sit in were worn. might be worth a check. as far as oil goes it shouldn't be poring out it should just be wet.

  • Ain't there supposed to be oil flowing out the top of the rockers?

  • haha ye im tinkin dat aswell

  • Ford's Pinto engine used to do the same, a C shell which has a hole for oil to flow through would twist and block the supply to the head.

Sensible manufacturers would put a notch in such a bearing to stop it twisting.

  • These engines were MADE to "clack" weren't they? :-)

  • Yes but mine was pretty bad. I solved it by re-adjusting the valve while it was running and it is much better now.
