Wait that's not quite true, the Monarch is allowed in the House of Commons as the Palace of Westminister is still a Royal Palace. it's just by convention that they don't enter
@kanenkitten Its more than convention. The last monarch who entered the Commons lost his head. Furthermore, the Commonweatlh/Protectorate period proved that the Commons could rule w/o a monarch nor the Lords. The lesson was not lost on future monarchs.
The Commons can invite the Sovereign into the Chamber...they did this with Henry VIII (while the House was sitting no less, demonstrating how cowed they were); and George VI inspected the Chamber when it was restored following the war (but Parliament wasn't then sitting)
@LouDogs1 In the 1940's, when the House of Commons was rebuilt after the blitz, King George VI, the current Queen's father, was permitted to view the interior. It was a rare and special privilege, reflecting the admiration in which he was held.
@mindspring57: Well you know there is no law stopping the monarch entering the Commons, they'd have to go through the shut the door thing but theres noting in statue stoppong the monarch entering the Commons apart from tradition.
@kanenkitten No, but the tradition is very strong, and it dates back to 1642 in the reign of King Charles I. During the Second World War, the Commons was bombed. When it was rebuilt, King George VI was allowed to view the inside. That an exception was made for him demonstrates the high affection and respect in which he was held by the British people. The story is told in Alan Michie's "God Save The Queen," published in England under the title, "The Crown and the People" in 1952.
The Sovereign doesn't visit the Commons Chamber because the Commons have the right (which is re-affirmed on the appointment of the Speaker with each Parliament) of absolute freedom of debate without the influence of the Sovereign. There is no lawful business to be made by the Sovereign in the Commons Chamber, even though the Palace of Westminster is still officially a Royal Palace. That's also why Black Rod has to wait for business to be suspended before he's admitted.
@DSXmachine I can just see it. 'My lords, members of the house of commons and Peter Mandelson. These are my governements proposals for the next year, well don't look at me, I didn't vote for them. My governemnt will er....oh no they won't, no ,no ,well they'll never get that through, fat chance, no.
@DSXmachine No, she must read it exactly as written. Her grandfather, King George V, once said that he could think of a few better things to do than read someone else's speech while wearing a 39 oz. crown on his head.
You were three years late for the first one and two years late for the second, then you only joined that because of Pearl Harbour, Land of the Free! more like land of fantasy!!
You are welcome to your opinion my good friend even if it it wrong.
Even the legitimate protest of the members of the house of commons has been subsumed as "tradition." Monarchy is tyranny, no matter how it's been sugar-coated. Oh, did I mention they have a state-run church, too. Yes the people of the UK are actually taxed to support a religion!
Come to think of it, it might actually be a better state of affairs to have a state sanctioned religion to keep the loonies occupied rather than let them form evangelical churches like in the States. But seriously, now, can't you get rid of the retarded, inbred monarchy?
as an American I totally agree w/ what you have to say about the looney evangelicals. zpat Robertson one of the crazier of them just said that Haiiti deserved what it got because they sold their soul to the devil in the 18th C. to win their freedom from France. Huh??? The sad part is that people will believe this crap.
@mapmanic WRONG on so many levels! We don't have a state-run church. England has an established church, CoE and Scotland has its own too. We don't get taxrd for the church, they have enough money on their own. I don't see what difference having a presindent would make to this country. We already elect our representatives, that works as it is. Monarchy is tradition, history and a constitutional safe guard - it has worked for nearly 1,200 years, its been well tested.
People like their traditions. It becomes a hobby, like having a favourite pen on hand or walking on one side of the road or sleeping on the same side of the bed.
no wonder there's a mark on that door ...

Pity it doesn't show the door of the Commons being slammed on Black Rod which asserts the Commons dominant role.

@mapmanic:
Ironically the House of Lords has become a better guardian of civil liberties, against the Government.
They refused to set into law the 90 days arrest without charge and the I.D. card system.
No complains about the church. I like it. Staid and boring.

@mapmanic:
Replace it with what? Power abhors a vacuum.
Mugabe seized power in Zimbabwe, Suharto became defacto King in Indonesia.
I prefer for them to stay on top.
The're cheaper than paying for a president.

What a load of old cobblers!
That's rich coming from a country that had a President that had to get his brother to fiddle the votes to get in!
You have your own country, stay in it!
