WOW, hey man, I was gone from radio by 1969 and turned to movies in LA so I am not the man that would know this tune...sorry. Would you let me know when you find out? There must be some lyric ID site on line...go search and ease your troubled mind.
@purkasz - I found out the song was by Eugene McDaniels and called River. He did it in 1972 as Universal Jones and again as himself in 1975. Lenny Williams of Tower of Power did it also in 1973, as did Roberta Flack and Joe Simon. I still haven't found out which version I used to hear on KDIA then but it was different from all of them. Slow like Joe Simon's but the sitar guitar was more up front, as were the drums. Maybe it was a promo they were pushing. One of the DJs would remember. Anyone?
Dear Mr. DJ - I lived in SF in 1973 and 1974 and I heard a song in the Top 40 all the time on KDIA and KSOL but can't remember who did it. It had a sitar effect on the guitar riff and was kind of slow like a Staple Singers song - the chorus went something like "There's a river in the valley, that runs through the hears, of everyone..." Can you or anyone identify what this song is? It's been plaguing me for 35 years!
I remember first listening to KDIA 1310am out of Oakland, California around 1968, when my family was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato, California. I continued listening to KDIA when I was in the navy stationed at Naval Air Station Alameda, California 1981-83. I believed the station was sold in the early 1990's. It was a hip R&B station.
@airjor1 OH MY GOD! KDIA "In the Mix" was on mind so I though to check here, (though I had doubts I'd find much). I used to listen to KDIA from Hamilton AFB 1981-85! They referred to themselves as an Album Oriented station, and you'd hear singles from LPs before they were played on other stations. It took a couple of years before KSOL wold come in clear at HAFB - it required those lame FM antennas - LOL.
@djJackMF We were stationed at Hamilton 1965-68, and 1973-74. My dad retired in 1974. I was in the Navy from 1980-86. I was stationed at Naval Air Station Alameda on the USS Kansas City (AOR 3) from 1981-83. I was called a Radioman (Communications). Boy, did I love KDIA!
@airjor1 That's so funny to see your post. My father CG was stationed in Alameda before transfering to Petaluma. We lived on Westover Circle and I used to climb those big hills all the time and listen to cassette recordings of KDIA. I just went back there a couple years ago and it's all these condos that look like they were designed in the 80's. KMEL was the Hard Rock station that switched to R&B after I moved in 1986.
@djJackMF I visited the Old Alameda Naval Air Station (It closed down April 1997) in March of this year, and almost all of the buildings are runned down and vacant. They do have a gym for the public and the USS Hornet museum. I also used to hang out in Oakland and Berkeley when my ship was in port, which was very rare.
@airjor1 My fun was limited somewhat being a teenager, particularly in Novato where the culture was rigidly vanilla... in fact I won't mention what my music was referred to as by the other kids - but my family frequented Filipino Parties in Oakland, Richmond, Hayward, etc. - and the kids, (us) would hang in the garage and Break, Waak, Cha Cha, all the things that didn't happen in HAFB - lol. Small world...
@djJackMF I was a young teenager also. After my dad retired from the Air Force we lived in Novato (lived on Elmwood Court) till July 1975, and then my parents decided that they wanted to live in a more diverse town, and also be near an Air Force Base (Travis AFB) in Fairfield. My dad died November of last year, and my mom still lives there. I live in Sacramento. Everyone in my family was in the military except my mom. (2) in the Air Force (2) in the Navy and (3) in the Army. Take Care
