James tyler makes great guitars. They made three sets of guitar and amp combos with VHT. This incorporated the VHT pit bull and a custom made james tyler stratocaster and instead of telexing the VHT they finished the amp with the same red, white, and blue finnish as the tyler. I was lucky enough to play through this setup at a guitar show in orlando recently and it blew my mind. They for $5000 you should expect quality. lol
The tone alone will tell u it aint smooth jazz....the guy can play quite well tho..shades of lee Rit in there....try listening to de king of smooth tho,, Norman Brown....everyone else pales into insignificance.....
@mungo187 Ofcourse people care about whether this is Jazz or not. They clicked on a video that should be showing smooth Jazz techniques, so it's pretty important...
You've got to laugh at all the nu-metaller comments. I love this tone, it's one I've been looking for a long time in my head. This type of jazz-fusion tone always reminds me of a californian sunset, driving by the beach, or a 70s/80s anime featuring Arsene Lupin.
As for the phrasing, the intonation, I think Rich loses it from time to time, but there are flashes of brilliance in his performance. Needs to work a little on his timing also. Overall an excellent improvisation I thoroughly enjoyed!
@santanaincubus I guess Jazz Fusion is more like Jeff Beck, Scott Henderson, Marcus Miller, etc... But this guitarist only plays some kind of bluesy music.
@RobinAngelini Yep. What got me into Jazz Fusion is Santana's Caravanserai album. But I love jazz too I am starting to get into Wes Mongomery's music.
@RobinAngelini Thsnk you. i dunno much about jazz and i dont like it. when i heard this i was like man jazz is good as, but at the same time wondering if this was jazz :/
@Usefulknowledgeable Just some kind of blues with modulations, this man's not inspired by Jazz, if you want Jazz Fusion listen about Scott Henderson, Miles Davis, Guthrie Govan, Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report...
Sounds like David Gilmour soling over his favorite porno backing tracks...great stuff though, definitely seems like great product for a lot of players who want to get this style down.
Is this the Richard Smith that used to play with Richard Elliot? If so, I saw him way back in the early 1990's in Manhatten at the South Street Seaport, and all I can say is,,,, unreal!!!
You got that right. I'm not hear for smooth jazz..fast smooth moves. This ain't smooth anything. This is going over changes. Let's hear this with no sutain, no bends...just an ES 175 through a Roland Jazz CHorus.

He's good but, is timing is slightly off on many of his riffs, If you listen close and pay attention to the backing track, it's really quite annoying...but it's pretty impressive some of his phrasing
Christ I got this because I thought it would be a gentle introduction to some concepts of Jazz playing. I can see I'm going to be spending hours with the metronome. Oh god.
@MyPhil87 It's not a fender I think it's Taylor or something. If you look on the trailer for the Dvd you might be able ot make it out, you can see it on the headstock.
@MyPhil87 Not a Fender but a James Tyler Studio Elite (I think) modelled on the strat shape. The solo reminded me of Ford, Carlton, Benson, Ritenour et al - enjoyed it.
@Arrivald Your right you can hear it in the lead approach and the tone! LickLibrary would benefit from a real jazz teacher or just to rename the DVD to Play Generic Fusion Guitar! Although not to be confused with Alans Holdsworth or a Frank Gamble's style of learning modern fusion guitar.
@trhnpc Well, for a start I'd really call this more of a rock session - he's at least playing with a rock style. Although he is playing over changes, he has the phrasing of a pentatonic player.

Third, a lot of jazz players play with that hand shape because of the ease of switching between strumming and single note playing.
Forth, I think it's easier to control dynamics that way.
@sydrnyc It's an older James Tyler with a Jimburst finish. I worked on that guitar when I worked for Jim. Richard sounds great!
