  • @sydrnyc It's an older James Tyler with a Jimburst finish. I worked on that guitar when I worked for Jim. Richard sounds great!

  • Nice fusion licks!

  • Jazziest thing I've ever heard... -_-

  • Stupid strato with floydrose!

  • Smooth jazz blows dick. COME AT BRO

  • i bet you like frank gambale..

  • Does he teach you how to play this track on the DVD?

  • santana ?

  • i might have to pinch the first thirty seconds, that was some pretty sweet stuff there

  • I wouldn't call it Jazz, but fusion.

  • tolexing*

  • James tyler makes great guitars. They made three sets of guitar and amp combos with VHT. This incorporated the VHT pit bull and a custom made james tyler stratocaster and instead of telexing the VHT they finished the amp with the same red, white, and blue finnish as the tyler. I was lucky enough to play through this setup at a guitar show in orlando recently and it blew my mind. They for $5000 you should expect quality. lol

  • The tone alone will tell u it aint smooth jazz....the guy can play quite well tho..shades of lee Rit in there....try listening to de king of smooth tho,, Norman Brown....everyone else pales into insignificance.....

  • Nice fusion soloing... The tone and some of the note choises remind me a bit of Frank Gambale. Obviously not quite there.. :)

  • What are the pickups in the neck and middle positions?

  • ok now som1 teach me how to do that

  • esto no es jazz ,es rock jazzeado...jajajaja

  • @Ezequiel6547 es fusion!!

  • @johanlr Hola johanlr......ok.... gracias

  • @RobinAngelini You Got That Right! THIS is real Jazz: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Improv - Jody Fisher check out that video! He is the man.

  • I think that the guitar needs a little tuning , Also the melody didn't inspired me..

  • smooth jazz isnt about speed, this needs more melody

  • more like jazz fusion

  • @mungo187 Ofcourse people care about whether this is Jazz or not. They clicked on a video that should be showing smooth Jazz techniques, so it's pretty important...

  • Lick Library start labeling your videos correctly please...this is not smooth jazz.

  • hm... well-well...Larry?

    молодец, чувак, поймал волну.

  • A backing track that is almost something that sounds a little bit like jazz........ with a power metal solo over it.

  • This sounds more of fusion jazz

  • That's not smoothj azz, I'm disapointed.

  • Awesome Playing

  • more like jazz fusion than jazz, I was hoping to see some sort of george benson solo ...

  • You've got to laugh at all the nu-metaller comments. I love this tone, it's one I've been looking for a long time in my head. This type of jazz-fusion tone always reminds me of a californian sunset, driving by the beach, or a 70s/80s anime featuring Arsene Lupin.

As for the phrasing, the intonation, I think Rich loses it from time to time, but there are flashes of brilliance in his performance. Needs to work a little on his timing also. Overall an excellent improvisation I thoroughly enjoyed!

  • boring music

  • Its Jazz Metal Fusion whish is even better than regular jazz :D

Check out Gordian Knot and Exivous

  • how can i get that tone

  • Very good Guitar solo my brother likes it :)

  • pooh

  • more like fusion.....know the different please.

  • Cool but... not Jazz at all !

  • @RobinAngelini Its called Jazz Fusion I guess

  • @santanaincubus I guess Jazz Fusion is more like Jeff Beck, Scott Henderson, Marcus Miller, etc... But this guitarist only plays some kind of bluesy music.

  • @RobinAngelini Yep. What got me into Jazz Fusion is Santana's Caravanserai album. But I love jazz too I am starting to get into Wes Mongomery's music.

  • @RobinAngelini Thsnk you. i dunno much about jazz and i dont like it. when i heard this i was like man jazz is good as, but at the same time wondering if this was jazz :/

  • @RobinAngelini more like Not Guthrie. For shame .

  • @RobinAngelini this is jazz fusion i believe

  • @RobinAngelini that's y it's called smooth jazz!

  • @RobinAngelini Jazz Fusion

  • @Usefulknowledgeable Just some kind of blues with modulations, this man's not inspired by Jazz, if you want Jazz Fusion listen about Scott Henderson, Miles Davis, Guthrie Govan, Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report...

  • @RobinAngelini Thanks bro

  • @RobinAngelini yes the tecnique are based on jazz.

  • @JDrockerDUDE Based. Just saying

  • @RobinAngelini It's jazz/rock fusion

  • @RobinAngelini It is jazz to.....The mode changing is similar, and the way the licks are used are jazzy..Funky Rock Jazz blues sounds great

  • cool..but not good

  • Cool headstock

  • Sounds like David Gilmour soling over his favorite porno backing tracks...great stuff though, definitely seems like great product for a lot of players who want to get this style down.

  • 1:10 theres gotto be a name for that! that was just awesome!

  • lol threw a little "Heart Breaker" in there. Epic...

  • this is fucking epic

  • this sound like eric johnson.. i love it!

  • we want the chords progressions!!!!!!!

  • smooth jazz?hmmm..awsome solo just the same!...

  • What on earth has "jazz" become?

  • q onda?.... ._.

  • Is this the Richard Smith that used to play with Richard Elliot? If so, I saw him way back in the early 1990's in Manhatten at the South Street Seaport, and all I can say is,,,, unreal!!!

  • I'm impressed by how precise your bends are '^_^

  • OMFG I LOVE YOU THIS IS ONE AMAZING SONG THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

  • viva pappo

  • Ventured in and out of the smooth jazz zone way too mich. Sorry man. No dice

  • @MrNico739 THIS IS STILL SMOOTH JAZZ LARRY CARLTON AND A BIT OF SANTANA MIX

  • Does anyone know what the chords are in this chord progression?

  • 9 people think they are either Hendrix, Stevie Ray or Clapton!

  • that's amazing

  • Old skool fusion, nice!

  • boo you poop out jazz.

  • That's a tone to die for - and tasteful playing too.

  • this stuff goes nowhere and has no feeling.. listen to martin taylor .. different class!! there is none of this bending strings nonsense!!!

  • I love that tone.. did it came from guitar effects/ amp? What stomp box combination has this quality?

  • di marzio pick ups?

  • I found this sounding really bad.

Not skillwise, but just the sound revolts me a little bit... i feel a bit bad.

  • not jazz

  • Amazing tone!

  • Gorgeous guitar.. where did you get it?

  • beautiful!

  • not smooth jazz but good none the less

  • I'd call this key-change rock.

  • WOW!

  • No that's not smooth jazz. But it is Guthrie putting his impression on the style.

  • How do you create the dual video? (Full size and insert)

  • Hi there from NZ....does the DVD come with backing tracks, including the one you're playing over here?

  • @aljmm0 Hi there - Yes the backing tracks come on the DVD. Hope that helps! Any further questions dont hestitate to email us!

  • @licklibrary I have the DVD...i was wondering if i can extract the backing tracks off it,

    to put in a Spiderjam

  • The Only Thing That Dont Like Me From This Video Is The Color Of The Guitar Because This Is Fucking AWESOMEE

  • I hear some Trey Anastasio style in it.

  • little santanaish

  • Holy Shit ! That is some awesome tasteful soling!!!!

  • This is just not smooth at all..

  • @xavierdeijscoman

You got that right. I'm not hear for smooth jazz..fast smooth moves. This ain't smooth anything. This is going over changes. Let's hear this with no sutain, no bends...just an ES 175 through a Roland Jazz CHorus.

  • There is definitely some nice stuff going on there that can add some melodic scope to louder and more legato based rock soloing.

  • He's good but, is timing is slightly off on many of his riffs, If you listen close and pay attention to the backing track, it's really quite annoying...but it's pretty impressive some of his phrasing

  • it sounds like fusion.. ..so cool

  • @licklibrary , Same for this video, what pick size did this guy use as well, love the fatness

  • Christ I got this because I thought it would be a gentle introduction to some concepts of Jazz playing. I can see I'm going to be spending hours with the metronome. Oh god.

  • @MyPhil87 It's not a fender I think it's Taylor or something. If you look on the trailer for the Dvd you might be able ot make it out, you can see it on the headstock.

  • @BenWGray It's a tyler, they're custom guitars

  • It's more fusion than smooth jazz

  • holy shit! reminds me of tommy emmanuel (and my guitar teacher)

  • do you know any good smooth jazz songs similar to this impro ?

  • @MyPhil87 Not a Fender but a James Tyler Studio Elite (I think) modelled on the strat shape. The solo reminded me of Ford, Carlton, Benson, Ritenour et al - enjoyed it.

  • I couldnt watch the whole thing for i was not worthy

  • smooth jazz? sure?

  • the lead is very david gilmour style in some parts if it was slowed down like half

  • DAMN your good!

  • Those bends just cry and moan. Love it.

  • yeah learn thar :P

  • great sounding

  • Shred Jazz :) However, these licks are not very hard so i think i'll watch this DVD.

  • Pffff... It sounds like Satriani or some other virtuoso thing, nothing to do with jazz.

  • @Arrivald ok... smarty

  • @Arrivald Your right you can hear it in the lead approach and the tone! LickLibrary would benefit from a real jazz teacher or just to rename the DVD to Play Generic Fusion Guitar! Although not to be confused with Alans Holdsworth or a Frank Gamble's style of learning modern fusion guitar.

  • wow that guitar looks so cool!!!!

    Floyd Rose-like tremolo

    The headstock looks cool

    Awesome color and pickguard

    Which pickups are those??

  • omg

    god

  • Did I hear Heartbreaker?

  • what kind of guitar is that

  • @derekbells Tyler guitars.

  • @derekbells james tyler, expensive but great guitars.

  • muy bueno :)

  • most hardcore jazz of all time lol

  • Sounds like the music on a fishing video game

  • @270Gmoney What the fuck

  • @270Gmoney pretty intense fishing

  • @arcanumi I know! I used to play them when I was little and it makes that sound when you catch a big bass or something

  • @270Gmoney a golf game also

    if there was less guitar

  • Allan Holdsworth dvd lesson, would be awesome.

  • smooth jazz?

  • If Gilmour joined Steely Dan.....

  • good licks but the phrasing sounds a bit disjointed imo

  • Oh how i wish i knew the fretboard this well.

  • Why do most jazz players keep the right hand in fist shape while the pick?

  • @trhnpc Well, for a start I'd really call this more of a rock session - he's at least playing with a rock style. Although he is playing over changes, he has the phrasing of a pentatonic player.

Secondly, it looks like he's using the tips of his fingers for balance.

Third, a lot of jazz players play with that hand shape because of the ease of switching between strumming and single note playing.

Forth, I think it's easier to control dynamics that way.

  • damn those are some smooth licks!

  • applesauce

  • you are gay... not that anyone cares

  • second....not that i care XD

  • first....not that i care XD
