  • Shit, I live in Hamburg and mix that up, lol.

But I'm not a true Hamburger, too.

  • This video was just wrong on so many levels, hehehe.

  • Hehe ;-)

  • hahaha das war mal wieder gut :)

  • You are the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

  • The version with "in das Wasser" is IMO the most common.

  • I actually had a debate with the cameraman (who you can always hear laughing all the time) about this.

When I learnt German, we learnt to used Accusativ for movement (A for Active) and Dativ for when there's no movent (D for Dormant). So it depends on what the duckies' heads are doing. If they are going into the water (movement), it would be 'in das Wasser'. if they were already in the water(no movement), it would be 'in dem Wasser'.

Okay, that's my Friday afternoon grammar lesson...

  • Oh, the pitfalls of the casus.

I remember a lengthy debate of my own about whether to say "Sie verschwand in der Küche" or "Sie verschwand in die Küche". I lost that discussion, but I swear that 90% of all Germans say it exactly the way I do.

  • > "Sie verschwand in der Küche" or

    > "Sie verschwand in die Küche"

Hm I'd say that depends on the context, or rahter the connotation you want to express. In the first one, the listener more stays with her, in the second one the listener stays with the person(s) she left.

  • Wow, my take on that is vastly different.

  • "Sie verschwand in der Küche" sounds like the kitchen is so vast she got lost somewhere between fridge and oven. So my vote goes to "in die Küche".

And I think that matches with the German Wiki articles about Dativ and Akkusativ. While Dativ is used to describe the current location, Akkusativ is used to point out the direction of the goal. But Miss V's explanation with movement/no movement can also be applied.

  • Okay, here's a question.

In everyday dialogue, you will most likely have a preference for one of the two. I, for example, will usually use "verschwand in *der* Menge/Küche/U-Bahn" etc. for both cases.

    Which do you usually use?

  • It depends, I'd say "in der Menge", but "in die U-Bahn".

But my two German grammar dictionaries support your case, apparently: "Der Gebrauch des Dativ überwiegt."

  • Follow the alpha dog, my friend. (c;

  • Okay, I don't know which of the posters above are German, but here is my opinion (based on feeling for the language) as a native speaker:

You can use both phrases, they are the same. (Well, I tried very hard to explain a difference I felt and then somehow lost the feeling that there really is one).

  • Hahaha, actually all of us except Miss Verständnis herself are German. Just goes to show you how debatable that question is.

Feel free to relay your opinion on Redfrettchen's video response to this video.

  • Wenn du Deutsch bist- warum schreibst du dann nicht auf Deutsch?

Werde ich mir wohl gleich mal angucken.

  • Aus dem gleichen Grunde, warum Du auf englisch kommentiert hast.

    Internationales Video => englische Diskussion.

  • Köpfchen in dem Wasser is wrong ,Miss V it`s "in das Wasser" Nominativ not Dativ, but very cool video

  • oh sorry! forget about the nominativ and dativ thingy, I was wrong there

    *blushes*

  • Bin beschämt. Actually I copied them from a website because I didn't trust my grammar. Plus I think it's 'unter Wasser in this version anyhow.

    Fixed!

  • und was lernen wir daraus?

    trust nobody, but your brain!
