bad research my son I'm a professional editor and the only software on this list that I wouldn't get laughed out of town for using is Sony Vegas, or abobe's Premier thats within the creative suite. The top two are without any doubt apples Final Cut Pro and Avid. Even at novice level final cut express would make top 5 without doubt.

After effect too is within adobe creative suite and is an awesome program but not what I'd describe as an editing program. Its more for animation, advanced text sequences, basic rotoscoping and special effects and is a very powerful tool if you have the knowledge. Apples Motion is a similar program that's a lot simpler to use but not quite as advance and I'd recommend as a good place to start if that's what you want to get into.

Agreed, I wonder how much they pay "TopTenReviews" to get to the #1 spot. The software looked interesting for 64 bit support and video card acceleration but when the thing crashes all the time you lose any time you may have gained in this speed recovering your work! Not to mention the frustration. Do yourself a favor and download all the demos you can find and test. I'm leaning towards the Sony Vegas suite myself.

to all those who think sony vegas is the best, could you explain as to why it keeps crashing, can't import avi files, runs extremely slow and has such a bad rep? (Just look up 'sony vegas crashes, sony vegas can't import avi, etc) that program is BUGGED. Sure it may be more versatile and have more features but power director runs very smoothly and is far more reliable. I've used both as trials and I couldnt make even one vid on vegas, made loads on power director though. Very user friendly.

@TheDigital333 After Effects is not an editing software, it's MOTION GRAPHICS & SPECIAL EFFECTS/COMPOSITING, Premiere is adobe's editing software. As for Final Cut, it's one of the best, if not the best, editing software but sadly only available on the mac.
