Interesting... As many others I've always taken "Ochi Chernye" as Russian Gypsy Song. But you are right, if we search something about the history of the song, we will find it quite complicated. The initial poem was written by original Ukrainian (1843). But actually Ukraine was a part of Russian Empire at that time :)
Much later the song based on these words appeared with the music of some German (1883) living in Rus..
And then Feodor Chaliapin, the famous Russian opera singer, made the song popular abroad in a version amended by himself (some additional coupets) . So nowadays "Ochi Chernye" is like visiting card of Russia, it is supposed to be the Russian brand... Vodka, caviar, matryoshka, "Ochi Chernye"... :)
There are still arguments regarding authourship.. But anyways there is nothing about Ukrainian or Russian or German or American or African (etc) nights. Just love and passion :)
