The "White Rose" is a Kyudo dojo in Darenth Park, outside of London, that Kate used to work out at. As for the (beautiful) song, it's typical of her use of imagery, synesthesia and (damn she is good at this) ..misdirection.
I actually dreamt about this song night and woke up with it in my head. It just made me think of how beautiful the world is. Words cannot express my love for Kate, she is so very special.
As someone else pointed out ,the song contains imagery associated with death: 'Ivy','under the leaves' etc there is even a direct reference to graves - So that makes me think that is a call to a lost love from beyond the grave .. like all good art it has a degree of ambiguity which allows for interpretation but I can't fathom how anyone can come to the conclusion that it is about 'intercourse'
This song makes me all emotional and sad. I love her little smile at the end, makes me happy again. Kate made the most moving music of all time and hopefully she makes more.
So pleased there is alive version available of this song. One of my favourites, so beautiful. Does anyone know if there is more footage of her at Abbey Road?
This song speakes sweetly about the simple innocent love and trust that you have when you are young. For some reason, maybe it's the touching way she sings this song, it makes me cry.
No one will ever hold a candle to Kate. She is pure art. She is pure beauty. She is simply the best. Yes, there are many wonderful artists in this world, but Kate has stood the test of time. Nowadays, everybody STILL wants to be like her, including me.
A favourite Kate Bush song of mine, because the lyric and the music are equally excellent and perfectly balanced, and this Abbey Road studio live version is just beautiful, and Kate is beautiful.
I have never heard this song, but I became a fan of Kate Bush at the end of last year (I'm only 15) but this song is incredibly beautiful. She's awesome. I don't think I've ever heard a singer put more emotion into their work than Kate Bush.
i totally agree bambi, (except i'm 21 lol) but i discovered her last year and was totally captivated by her art and the emotion she puts into her work. where do you live? the US? nobody in the US has heard of her really :(
Oh, my god, I've just watched her on Ask Aspel doing Kashka from Baghdad - and she does exactly the same at the end - allows the music to die and then slowly comes to.
She really is in another dimension when she plays and sings - back in her childhood home, or in her own secret world?
I find this a fascinating song, at face value it seems like a girl or woman innocently telling of a secret place but it also seems to have very strong erotic overtones (or undertones). Which is it - both maybe?
oH Kate you are so tutta bella, peeka boo I can see you, you are as bright as the stars in the sky I can see it in the twinkle of your eyes:):):) Kate come back for 2009 call it Entering the CrossRoads":):):) BRAVO "CHIN CHIN CHENTE ANNI SALUTE CAIO:):):)
Possibly. But it is a very personal song by Kate, and the imagery is her own. When asked directly about it, she said:
"It's very much a song about someone who is sneaking away from a party to meet someone elusively, secretly, and to possibly make love with them, or just to communicate, but it's secret, and it's something they used to do and that they won't be able to do again. It's about a nostalgic, revisited moment."
I get it, hundreds of us 'get it'. A lot of people are put off by the initial single - Wuthering Heights, and the heights her vocal goes too I imagine. They are all missing out in the long run. A lot of people i know mock me for liking her, but then I find them enjoying her music.
Thank you! Best copy I've ever seen. How fortunate we are to actually have a performance of Kate doing "Ivy" live... oh, and by the way... I had always heard that "Under the Ivy" was about the place in her backyard where she would go to use the bathroom when playing outside as a child. I know, sounds crazy, but i'm not making that up... just wish i could remember where I read it. No matter... look at this gorgeous little song that arose out of the "Hounds Of Love" sessions. Pretty amazing...
Thank you, this is such a beautiful song, one of my favourite Kate Bush's songs. I never know what this song is about, when I first heard it many years ago, I thought it was something to do with death because of the lyrics - under the ivy, under the leaves, white rose etc. Would be nice if there's someone who actually know what it is about.
This is obviously a deeply personal song to Kate, and as far as I know, she's never bothered to explain what it's about. I've always thought it was about a clandestine meeting with a lover that she trusts enough to take to her most secret hiding place. But I could be completely wrong.
I think you are reading too much into it. However, I agree with your interpretation - it's the one I've always applied to this track, so we're of a mind, and either both right or both wrong! :)
maybe i'm reading too much into it, but i think she is talking about a favourite place in the garden of her family home, a sacred spot where she would escape to on her own as a little girl. she is arranging to meet a lover there, who she is daring to trust with her secret place.
there is an element of sadness in the song, and the fact that she is meeting this person in a secret place suggests that maybe it's someone she is in love with but can't be with openly- a forbidden love.

odd that it was originally a b-side, when it's my favourite KB song and seemingly was a quite important one to be showcased on the Tube?

I find the video clips interspersed in there kind of cheesy though. It makes me think of a tribute video for someone who's died...

Saw this back in 86
'...to tell you where we'll meee-eee-eeet'
I love her music, but just her and a grand piano and a song of lost innocence. Jouissance.
No one writes songs that tear your heart out like this...and no one sings songs that make you see another's worlds like her.
Kate and her piano. Me in the audience - what wouldn't I give?
