As someone else pointed out ,the song contains imagery associated with death: 'Ivy','under the leaves' etc there is even a direct reference to graves - So that makes me think that is a call to a lost love from beyond the grave .. like all good art it has a degree of ambiguity which allows for interpretation but I can't fathom how anyone can come to the conclusion that it is about 'intercourse'

This is obviously a deeply personal song to Kate, and as far as I know, she's never bothered to explain what it's about. I've always thought it was about a clandestine meeting with a lover that she trusts enough to take to her most secret hiding place. But I could be completely wrong.

maybe i'm reading too much into it, but i think she is talking about a favourite place in the garden of her family home, a sacred spot where she would escape to on her own as a little girl. she is arranging to meet a lover there, who she is daring to trust with her secret place.

there is an element of sadness in the song, and the fact that she is meeting this person in a secret place suggests that maybe it's someone she is in love with but can't be with openly- a forbidden love.
