Burning a flag is protected speech, under the First Amendment, according to the US Supreme Court. When I've seen it done, it was generally an act of high and idealistic patriotism, done in an attempt to call America back to ideals of truth and decency by protesting outrages committed by some particular administration.

Patriotism is best described as loving one's country always, & one's gov't when it deserves it....

In the real world, the government of this country has consistently broken ALL treaties with indigenous peoples around the world and this continent as well. So the flag is really a symbol of universal oppression and stated goodwill which we've yet to convincingly convey. Yes, the US government, not the people, is batting 1.000 against its own stated principles. At least acknowledge this in history. Ideals do not = reality. This country is not full of angels. Actions speak louder than words.

The thing that is incorrect about that statement is that The Daily Show isn't suppose to be a news show. Each has its purpose, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer provides real factual coverage of events and thank god they do because it is so rare these days. But The Daily Show also has its purpose in pointing out, though satire, how ridiculous the cable news media has gotten.
