You can drive a piece of rebar in the ground near the trap to secure the chain or tie some rope from the chain to a nearby log.. Be carful using rope though especally on foot traps.. If the animal doesn't die it could chew through the rope.. Possum and beaver are bad for that
I once forget my setters for my 330's and i was in the middle of nowere in the woods (about 3 miles from the truck) and i had to use my hands.... well lets just say, i only set 1 that day
i was setting a 220 today and i was hooking the key to the trigger and one of the hooks came off damn didnt that hurt... so now im using the tool to hold the corners together when i set the key
i have some of those setters but im having trouble setting #330 if i weld on some extensions will that make it easier...im 13 btw so dont get you should be able to set them..thats for everybody else..not you!
Whether using clamps or not - what happens if the safety latch on one or both main springs falls off or gets accidently knocked loose while compressing the square jaws/setting the catch and you have to let the square jaws go for whatever reason - would the main spring/s snap the trap shut? When squatting on a river bank in semi-darkness and freezing temperatures with mud all over your hands little hang-ups like this can happen easily.
I have had this happen. If one jay hook is still on the traps jaws will not shut. But, if both go off the traps jaws will set off completely. I usually only use that tool on 330 and bigger. I always set the key on the trigger by hand and keep the springs pointed down. This way the j safety hooks don't come off. And also another thing i do is set the traps before i go out. as long as the springs are set and the j safety hooks are on, the pressure will keep the hooks on making it more safe!
Many of the same animals. Sometimes there are limitations on the location that you may use the trap, so having various sizes available gives the trapper flexibility in sets.
Excellent! Just got the scissors, still have my fingers, and both really work. Thanks

Trapping tip of the day: Remember people, ALWAYS I mean ALWAYS wax your conibears!
gunner9x19 1 year ago
@gunner9x19 how do you wax them? I'm just getting into trapping so i'm learning as i go
bullridingmike 1 year ago
I'm joking. NEVER EVER wax conibears. It makes them dangerous to handle.

how would you stake or wire these down with the big loops?
