I can't believe it! I just googled this band's name on the outside chance that there might be some obscure info on them. The reason I googled them was, this is the first band I ever saw when I went to Greenwich Village in '67. I'll never forget it, it was at the "Cafe Wha?" and I had a drink called a "rum demon". I was 18 years old, in the Army stationed at Ft Meade, Md, and a few months away from shipping out to Vietnam. Thanks for posting this!
I saw these guys with my high school friend at the Woodstock Soundout(s) in the summer of '68 ...Soft Machine was also there among others...I found out later these bands were all of Hendrix's stable of opening bands that summer..
Indeed Jimi Hendrix did produce their first album! On the day of the recording for this song, the drummer was sick and my Dad filled in for him!! So that's really my Pops you hear on the studio version of this song! My Dad ROCKS!!!!
@MrJohnnyDistortion -- With honor.... My Dad's name is George J. Ferguson from Clifton Heights, PA ... This song will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks so much for asking :)
Hey Folks! MIchael Equine here. I was the drummer for Cat Mother. I see all of the interest where the hell you can get all 4 CD's in one package. Well..........if you call me at 707-235-8582, I can tell you how to do it. This set comes with a bunch of wallet size photos of the band, JImi posters, the original photo from the first album cover, autographs of band members, etc.
This is amazing, they all look so young. Bob and Loy are gone now, but what about Michael Equine? They were even better IMHO when John Chamberlin joined, and he's not even credited on Wikipedia. John and Roy were magic together. Steve Davidson coming in on congas also changed the sound to something unique.
I saw these guys open for Jimi Hendrix at Cincinnati Gardens in (I believe) 1969... November, as I recall. Jimi produced their first album, or the one that was new at the time. They were pretty cool, as I remember... lots of brain-cells ago!!
@squidlycarmichael Saw the same lineup in Tampa back then. Jimi shot the crowd the bird and slammed offstage for some reason.....Cat Mother opened. So all was not lost.....as I recall I had been wired for a few days before the show.,
@jdmfonte Sorry Jimi wasn't more receptive to the Tampa crowd. Who knows? I'm just glad that I got to see what I did that night... freakin' amazing! And Cat Mother was very cool, although I have to admit, the first Jimi show I saw had Soft Machine as the opener, and that was just drop-jaw amazing! (Xavier University; Schmidt Fieldhouse; March 18th, 1968 or 1969... I think).
Being the '60s nut that I am, I've wondered about this track forever and a day because here it was a Top 40 hit in 1969 but you NEVER HEAR IT....EVER! This is pretty cool being able to not only hear the song but be able to see what they looked like and how they worked together!
Alrighty, concru2, I'll accept your challenge. I bought ALBION DOO-WAA back in the 70's when I lived in Sacramento. Played the heck out of it and I am sure I still have it in storage waiting to be transferred to mp3. Often dreamed of living in a cabin like the one on the cover. I'm still a frustrated hippie wannabe at heart.
Hey nardrebel! I have been enjoying mine for the last week or so. I sent a money order for $50.00 (45+5 S+H) TO: M.J.H. Equine 3590 Petaluma Blvd. North, Petaluma, California 94952. "Forty Years Down The Road" Don't forget your return info. I think Cat Mother made some of the best music of their time. Even today, they're great to listen to! Their music is timeless!! ENJOY!!!!
WOW!!!! You won't believe this! A friend just sent me all four Cat Mother albums on CD!! They just became available. It's about time! Spread the word Cat Mother fans! The title of the package is, "Forty Years Down The Road". It was only $45.oo, the shipping and handling was included! I will post the info. on where to purchase it a little later today!
Their stuff has been re-released on vinyl too with a free MP3 download included with each album. The local music store has been adding alot of new release vinyl lately. The manager said that some vinyl copies of certain albums are outselling the CD copies.
This is great! My all time favorite band, but never saw them preform live or on video. The lp this is from of is one of the best ever. They remastered it about 10 years ago. It wasn't available for very long, but I got one. They had 3 other lp's, but this was the best. Thank you!
It's so funny...after having done a film about Woodstock...and the Woodstock Soundouts...all everybody talks about is Cat Mother...how great they were...Forget Sweetwater, these guys apparently were the one great band missing from Woodstock...
they were at Woodstock, but it was AT the first Woodstock, the year before the BIG one, they (catmother) had a festival in their back yard, I was there, I never hear anything about it
these guys were the opening act for countless shows i saw at the fillmore east. i never thought i'd see them perform again live as so few people seem to remember them. thanks for posting this! and bless the magic of youtube...
Oh Yeah! Excellent! I love that U collect "records" LOL Before I got Divorced, I had a collection U would DIE for.. Some signed, some just off the wall. Do U have any Jimmie Spheeris? Isle of U ?
Oh man, I have the vinyl on this... No needle for my turntable though! That sucks!!!!Any contributions are accepted. LOL Is a great album. wow, I said album. lol

I got tuned in to Cat Mother from some friends who saw them at the Family Dog in San Francisco, late 60's, with Jefferson Airplane. Great album, the Street Taketh! A bit of trivia...Charlie Chin is listed on Buffalo Springfield's Again album...playing banjo on Bluebird if I recall. Their songs have survived the test of time...I still play "Can you dance to it?" on guitar...and I still love it!
Saw Cat Mother as the opening act for (his majesty) Jimi Hendrix in San Diego shortly before the great one left this world. My first concert and one of the very best!
Bless you, Conkyjoe, for giving us this video. I bought "The Street Giveth" on LP in 1969 and have thought ever since that it was one of the great unsung rock albums of all time. And now I know what Charlie Chin, Roy Michaels, and the rest looked like. If any of them watch Youtube, it would be nice to hear from you. Does anyone have a video of "Marie" or "Charlie's Waltz" or "Boston Burglar"?
i have the 1971 catmother album never seen this or any others for sale. The one i have is on United Artists number JAG 29313, recorded at Electric Ladyland Sudios September 1971.Charlie Pritchard,Lead Guitar,Roy Michaels ,Bass, Bob Smith Keyboards,Michael Equine,Drums,Steve Davidson,Percussion, plus others, anyone got more info on them please let me know.Cheers.
Believe it or not, one of the members of this group was Jay Unger, who would compose "Ashokan Fairwell," the haunting song made famous in Ken Burn's "The Civil War."

The Buddy Miles Express also opened that night.
