You are referring to dark energy not dark matter. Dark matter is what seems to make up the majority of the known universe's mass and it also seems to be what is holding galaxies themselves together while dark energy keeps them moving away from eachother at an ever increasing rate.

If the universe, according to some depressing observations made a couple/few years ago is expanding at an exponential rate, then why do we need dark matter? Everything *isn't* holding together, it's flying apart at a scary speed. Everlasting separation and darkness at the end, even unto the last proton. Do we need the theory of dark matter anymore? Are there any physicists out there?

The end of the universe is the divide-by-zero of cosmology. Don't mess with it unless you want your brains ruined or, unless you are a absolute genius. it is logically presumable for us now that there is no end. We haven't seen a end or have ever been at a end so that might state that there is no end and thus space is infinite. However it is also wise to consider that our space might be curved through a 4th spacial dimension so that the universe loopholes into itself.
