This was likely a standby until LCD and Plasma displays became more available and cheaper. I learned something new today. I didnt know the made HDTVs with the old picture tubes. I am pleased so far with the 2 LCD TVs I have.
CRT HDTVs are almost better than the new LED and LCDs simply because the standard-def channels will still look good on the CRT, as opposed to looking like absolute crud on a LED or LCD.
@retrochad this was the best tv that i had now. Mine tv was a sony trinitron crt but after 4 years it was broken when i turn on it it power off . Now i have A SAMSUNG LCD TV also ttis one very nice
I have an hs420 bought new in 05 from circuit city and ive been very satisfied with it. I couldnt of made a better choice! Quality and reliability is top notch on these. A little small tweaks in service.menu made the hd picture even more impressive
6:28 Wipeout is a good show. Can't believe those contestants are willing to go through all that trouble for 50 grand. I don't think it's worth 50 grand. Should be worth 100 grand.
If you come across one, GET IT! My Xbox 360 games and HD-DVD movies are beautiful on this set. But I think the real plus is that 480i signals almost look as good as a they did on my old TV's.
I was also not as impressed with flat panels. Plasma comes close...but not quite. That's why I went to Craiglist when I finally decided to upgrade to HD. I ended up getting the KV-32HS420, which is a HD 4:3 CRT. That's actually perfect for me, since I watch a lot of older 4:3 shows, in addition to newer 16:9 stuff. Of course it does do 16:9 compression or "enhanced" mode, and in SD mode, does recognize widescreen signaling.
-- I actually have a bit more tweaking to do with mine (especially since it's now been moved to the opposite side of the room), but I've been in the service menu quite a few times, making geometry and convergence adjustments. While there, I have also disabled all the unnecessary filtering and other "enhancements", as well as completely removed the red push. SD looks great on it, anamorphic widescreen SD looks even better, and HD looks just AWESOME!
@retrochad Awesome find! I have the 27" version of this set (the KV-27HS420), connected to a LG LST-3100 DTV tuner via the component video connection. I found the set by someone's garbage to be discarded, but I luckily rescued it and it works perfectly. Great picture and very rich color. A shame that someone would throw something like this out (probably because they upgraded to a LCD or plasma flat panel TV, which I feel as well does not create as good a picture as a CRT HDTV set).
Youd think Sony or whoever would still be manufacturing good quality CRT, maybe in limited numbers for gamers, or people that just prefer a CRT picture (myself). I'd absolutely buy a brand new Trinitron WEGA for gaming if I could, and I know many others that would.
What is the maximum resolution this thing will do 720 or 1080? You could use it as a computer monitor. If it has a VGA input it would be a direct input, otherwise you could use a DVI to HDMI adapter. DVI is just HDMI plus audio. Im surprised it doesnt have a DTV tuner. But early DTV tuners weren't that good and in 2004 the FCC wasn't mandating them yet in new TVs.
@xmaddict Component video in theory can do 1080p, but for virtually all consumer electronics is limited to 1080i/720p. There are no over-the-air broadcasts in 1080p at this time.
Hi Chad, Yes I agree the crt sets look much more sharper and clearer than the flat panels in standard def. The hd also looks better with crt. the only issue is the heavy weight of the larger crt's . I have both types and prefer the crt.
Last week, I too just got a wide screen 32" Sony HDTV KV-30HS420. like yours - from the Salvation Army for 80$ (w/remote and book). Mine works great! It not only weighs a ton, but it is FRONT HEAVY, and easily can tip forward. When I saw it's a CRT HDTV, I jumped for it! Um gonna put it upstairs in my boodwha. It will take two husky guys to get it up there too! uma happy camper!
I'm a big fan of the Sony CRT sets. There was a period of adjustment when I bought a Sony LCD last year. Now I prefer the flat panel but agree a CRT looks superior for low res programming.
@austinklucas We don't have cable TV available where I live. We used to have directTV but we got tired of all the advertising and such during the programming that we cancelled it. Plus with digital broadcast television we can now get good quality reception of over-the-air channels.
Chad, I agree with you on not liking flat panel HD TV's. Last year a friend of ours gave us a 36" CRT FD Wega Trinitron KV36HS-500. This set weighs 240 lbs. It has a matching stand which has room for a lot of components. It took three of us to lift the thing on the stand. From the shape, it looks like it was made to be placed in a corner. While not a wide screen CRT we really enjoy the picture quality. I also have a Sony Trinitron monitor on my PC and love it better than a flat panel.
Nice find. I have yet to see a flat-panel HDTV match the picture quality of a good CRT HDTV, such as these FD Trinitron WEGA Hi-Scan models, or a Panasonic Tau HDTV (which I am fortunate enough to own).
Only Sony Trinitrons with model number beginning in KD (instead of KV) have an ATSC digital tuner built in.
I remember these Sony HD CRT TVs, and they do have beautiful pictures. My neighbor had a 46"Toshiba HD TV,wasn't happy with it as it had a bright cold looking picture, and changed to A Sony 48" Bravia, and it has fantastic ultra sharp warm just like being there pictures. I have a 27" CRT HItachi Hi Resolution TV, but nothing compares to his Sony Bravia. Your Sony CRT would be hard to beat as a CRT has more natural warmer pictures than some LCDs do, maybe that is what you didn't like.
My Aunt has a Wega TV also, hers is much bigger, and therefore is TERRIBLY HEAVY. Hers has developed an issue where the bottom part of the screen is bowed upwards a bit.
Otherwise, it seems to be a good TV. Some of these had other issues some people said. But I prefer a HD CRT over a flat panel LCD/Plasma TV. The picture seems better to me.
What is it that you don't like about LCD and plasma TVs? Are you thinking about the early low-end sets where the upscaling of regular low-res broadcasts looked horrible? Got me a 50" plasma about half a year ago, and honestly the picture quality is awesome on regular DTV broadcasts. We don't have analog transmissions here anymore, nor do I have any HD channels.
@bonecrime I agree. Early flat panels were really inferior to a good CRT TV. But the new full-array LED LCDs are fantastic. And of course plasmas have always had quite good HD pictures, they are just having more trouble competing with LCDs these days.
I think these sets are multiscan. I could be wrong though. Most projection TVs besides some high end mitsubishi models, were upconverted fixed scan at 1080i and made low resolution pictures look awful. same with LCD/Plasma. they are upscanned.
While the top model mitsubishi CRT projection of the mid 2000s were multiscan and you knew it when it switched resolutions. plus the picture was good.
@1112223333111 The line voltage seems to be around 120 volts. That amp runs the tubes with plate voltage near the maximum and line voltage above 115 caused problems with tube arcing. I have another video showing how the autotransformer was set up. We don't have natural gas available in our area (they do in the city though) and some areas did have blackouts however we just had occasional power outages where it went out for a second or so.
@retrochad They might be rare in the us but in australia there everywhere my auntie owns one i used to and my friend bought one for 20 bucks recently :) There great tvs
@mattkoser These are field coil speakers for the Hammond organ so there is no magnetic field when they are off...plus I think the speakers themselves are far enough away from the CRT that they don't cause a problem.
I had that one since 2005, still works great, hard to find something that beats it..you really have to go high end to come close.

@Crashbanksbuysilver It has to be plasma too, no LED or LCD that I have seen beats it.

I like the image on CRT.I still use CRT PC Monitor from 2002,it doesn't have a single dead pixel.Too bad I can't buy 1080p CRT TV (it DOES exist).
If I had a company,i would probably test if CRT can display 2160p or even true 4k.
That would be bizarrely awesome.
