Even though I prefer the remake, since I grew up with it - the original version is clearly superior, though not for its singing or even the main character's acting. It's the brilliant portrayal of just how crummy the orphanage is and how much the orphans are suffering beneath the hand of a heartless matron. No offense to Cathy Bates but, she was just irritated and short-tempered throughout the movie - while the original looked ready to stab all the children to death at any given moment.
