Yes a very sad story for such talented singers and songwriters. All they wanted was to write good music, get paid for it and enjoy life. They did write great music. We all miss them.Where are the groups like this today?
@novocastrian50 Good question! I wonder the same thing. Yes, it is in the U.S. and they have certainly inducted many lame and lesser performers. Badfinger should have been one of the first...
Trivia...Nick Lohri of the NY based band TOYS was slated to replace Pete Ham in the late 70s for the first Badfinger reunion but it got scrapped when one of the remaining members' mother passed away.
This has to be one of rock n roll's worst tragedies... and with a Hollywood - Shakespearean ending. What a curse on a great band. Badfinger deserves recognition for their music and songwriting. I don't understand why they are underrated! You can't fathom the loss of two great singers: Pete Ham and Tom Evans. They are legends.
This band could've been legendary if they had just stuck it out. Look at Slade...it seemed to be over and then bam...they hit again in the 80's. Look at Anvil's success now...other bands too could've thrown in the towel..KISS, Rush and more. You don't have to be a huge commercial success to enjoy a lucrative music career...Angel, Kansas, BOC, Rare Earth and many more are still out there touring and playing to packed houses.
Incredible vocals in this song ! I remember well when I heard it for the first time. I was in grammer school back in the early 70's. Great post ! raferdurham !
If anyone would like to add their support in my campaign to get Swansea City Council to honour Badfinger then please join the facebook group - petition swansea council to honour the band badfinger, thanks and spread the word with your friends :-)
The actual true story of Badfinger is really kind of sad... especially since if the two that committed suicide were here today they would probably still be making some the great ear-catching melodies they did back then. I still turn up the radio every time a Badfinger song comes on... amongst coolest of the cool.
these gusy are fucking cool i take alot of shit cuiz i have long hair like these guys and peoepl say are you a man or a woman and i almost get in fistfighsts over iit..what i am saying si if you are loookung and thinking what YOU like stick to your guns..be yourSELF be an INDIVIDUAL.
Part of the Beatles success was their charisma.Pete and Tom had zero charisma and as brilliant as they were, they would have had to top themselves over and over with songwriting alone. It's impossible.
Warnor Brothers killed Badfinger along with Stan Polley. Their album "Wish You Were Here" continues to be an amazing album easily on par with anything the solo Beatles were doing at that time. That WB took it from the shelves just as it was getting airplay and awesome reviews (Rolling Stone, Billboard, Creem, Circus) is a travesty. Pete and Tommy should still be alive today and we should still be enjoying their music. RIP Pete, Tommy and Mike. Keep the flame and name... Joey!
I can't understand why WB did that. Supposedly it was because Stan Polley had withdrawn, er, stolen $100,000 from an escrow account, but if they're trying to recover money from the band, wouldn't it make more sense to help make "Wish You Were Here" a huge hit, then get the money back through sales and, if necessary, litigation? Instead they kill the album and destroy the band (and 2 lives) in the process.
Thanks again Raferdurham! This is delicious. Nobody's making music this hot any more, that's for sure. Wish I coulda seen this live, but this is the next best thing!
I think Gibbins played fast because they had to squeeze the last song into to TV time format. They tear right into another song on this fade as the credits roll.
These guys made at least three of the greatest songs of the 70's: No Matter What, Day After Day, and Baby Blue. All top of the list classics. There were other songs, of course, but these three stand out the most. In fact, I often hear songs and think to myself, God, I wish I could write like that (I can't). Can't say that about a lot of songs, but these three all qualify.
Don't forget "Without You." Even if you don't personally like the song, three other artists had hits with it in three different decades, including Nilsson's chart topping cover.
Wow, Mike's drumming must have been a wake-up call for Pete, Tom, and Joey! Well, may be he had to drum faster so they could fit it in at last minute (since it seems this was their last song for the night).
Haha, Crazy Joey, smiling at the camera- very John Lennonish- They both like to joke around on stage.
Great video- RIP Pete, Tom, and Mike- Keep the Badfinger music alive, Joey
What a great band - this is Power Pop in all its' non-blues glory. This song must've given Pete Townshend many sleepless nights, "how do I better that??????"
raferdurham, this is all great stuff you've posted. For once, it actually seems Badfinger was enjoying themselves and giving a great performance to boot. Awesome, absolutely awesome!
Sounds like someone turned up a speed button named Mike (Gibbons). He was drumming at 90 miles an hour. Poor Pete was probably thinking HOLY CRAP! But, Pete kept up and rocked it out. As usual, no matter what, Pete was awesome. He may have needed a wiff of oxygen after the song, but he pulled it off.
He's worse than that. Did that son of a bitch die yet? That's when he'll get his just desserts. NO MATTER WHAT STAN POLLEY DOES, his soul is still going to HELL.
Thank you FabGuy44 for sending me this wonderful performance of Badfinger. This is as raw as you can get....no studio mix...just flat out jamming the tune out! This is so clean it sparkles! GREAT VIDEO! Peace!
Love how the drummer speeds it up to super speed after Pete already set the pace with the guitar riff....lol. Oh well ...still friggin' great tune and RAW live performance... I love raw performances ... pure and awesome !!! Thanks for posting !!!!
