Nonsense. Human beings shouldn't be this way precisely because we are not like the animals. I remember my beloved old dog, jumping up and stealing a freshly made sandwich right out of my hand.
"...neutered." Is it ironic? Is it sincere? Nobody can agree. I think Errol Morris decided to let the cameras roll without a fixed determination of how he wanted to characterize these people, which was possibly the best strategy. The last portion, focusing on Cal's sons, is monumental; an invaluable time capsule and peek into '70s life & the post-American dream.
Excellent, exemplary clip from my favorite documentary. Notice how Morris makes every background detail count. In this case, scales of justice and bronzed baby shoes. Better yet is the rival businessman with all the awards, one of which falls down.
This is such a strange documentary. Just finished watching it. It really wasn't what I expected at all ... Morris gave a lot more attention to the intricacies, nuances and personal details of the individuals who are caught up, or in somehow related to, the circumstances of pet cemeteries. In doing so, he touches on a lot more topics than the bond between man and pet ... but also, the way we make a (satisfying) living in this life to our own comfort and satisfaction. ... Interesting stuff.
This man sums up, in half a minute, what I have been trying to relate to my friends and family for years. I have had many dogs and cats over the years. I have N E V E R doubted their feelings for me. They have been true. I am greatly saddened that I can not say that about ANY human I have ever met. I love my family and my friends. But my dogs and cats have been the TRUEST friends and companions I shall ever know. I have absolutely no doubt regarding this feeling/belief.
The reason it won't betray you etc is because its not on that level of intelligence or awareness, it doesn't act that way out of choice. Its to do with conditioning and dependency, animals work on instinct, not human emotion.
All this "my dog/cat loves me" is purely you projecting your human understanding of actions onto the animal, its complete conjecture.
Very true, animals build bonds for survival purposes. If you don't feed your animals they will leave, become pissed, etc. Animals can turn on people at any moment as well if they become threatened. My personal belief is that animals, although consistent, are not capable of either great good or great evil, they remain outside of morality and can never fully understand human affairs. Animals don't hate us or love us, it's just a strange companionship that can't be fully explained.
